The purpose of this study is to investigate the phonetic value of final consonant ‘ㅅ’ in Korean used in the 15th century. This study systematically categorized the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ in the surface representation considering the underlying representation in Korean used in the 15th century. In chapter Ⅰ, the purpose of this study and the preceding studies on this subject will be reviewed. In chapter Ⅱ, various features of final consonant ‘ㅅ’ within the Hunmin-Jeongeum which laid the foundation for Korean orthography in the 15th century will be reviewed. A definition of underlying representation will be also reviewed. The final consonant ‘ㅅ’ is an independent phoneme and it has the same status as ‘ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ’ all of which are the typical final consonants in Korean used in the 15th century. Underlying representations of the final consonants in the lexicon of the 15th century Korean text are ‘ㅅ, ㅿ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㆆ, ㅎ'. Saisiot(ㅅ) can be included as one of underlying representations under the condition of segment characteristics. In chapter Ⅲ, the surface representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ which is related to underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ and ‘ㅿ’ will be reviewed. The phonetic value of 'ㅅ‘ in the underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ was differentiated from the phonetic value of the final consonant ‘ㄷ’. It was possible to write optionally the coda consonant clusters ‘ㅅ’ whose underlying representation was ‘ㅅ’ in the position of initial and final consonant. ‘ㅅ’ is used as the representative consonant when consonant cluster simplification occurs. Final consonant ‘ㅅ’ whose underlying representation is ‘ㅿ’ can be used optionally as the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ in the same period documents. It is estimated that mixed grammatical recognition of ‘ㅿ’ is reflected in the surface representation. The phonetic value of final consonant ‘ㅅ’ whose underlying representation was ‘ㅿ’ got recognized as the same phonetic values in the final consonant ‘ㅅ’. In chapter Ⅳ, the surface representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ whose underlying representation was ‘ㅈ’ and ‘ㅊ’ will be reviewed. The underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㅈ’ and ‘ㅊ’ was pronounced as a plosive consonant before the later period of the middle Korean. These plosive final consonants-‘ㅈ, ㅊ’-remained until the later period of the middle Korean after being fossilized through the combination with honorific prefinal ending. The underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㅈ’ and ‘ㅊ’ is recognized as the phonetic value of [s] in the 15th century. Due to their characteristics, consonant cluster simplification did not occur within coda consonant clusters when underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㅈ’ and ‘ㅊ’ was used. In chapter Ⅴ, the surface representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ of underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㆆ’ and ‘ㅎ’ will be reviewed. In the 15th century, guttural sound was written under very limited circumstances. Underlying representation of the final consonant ‘ㆆ’ was written only as adnominal ending ‘ᇙ’. The surface representation of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ whose underlying representation of the final consonant was ‘ㅎ’ got written only when it was combined with honorific prefinal ending. As a result, characteristics of implosion of a guttural sound which affected the initial consonant of the following word got applied to the writing of the final consonant ‘ㅅ’. In chapter Ⅵ, the phonetic value and the function of Saisiot will be reviewed. The Saisiot performs a phonological function which is the glottalization of the initial consonant of the following word. The phonetic value of Saisiot is a glottal plosive.;
