추상표현주의 브래들리 워커 톰린 (Bradley Walker Tomlin)의 회화 이미지를 응용한 의상디자인

Abstract

현대 예술은 고유의 자기분야 외에 다른 장르와의 교류와 협업으로 표현 영역이 확대되고, 상호 경계가 불분명해지는 융합의 경향을 보인다. 창의적이고 독창적인 것을 추구하는 디자이너는 회화, 조각, 건축 등 과거에는 접근하기 어려웠던 다른 예술들을 응용할 수 있는 분야로 새롭게 인식하였다. 디자이너의 이러한 인식은 사회 발전으로 생활수준이 향상되고 여유로워진 현대인들이 자기만의 스타일과 철학으로 독창적인 삶을 추구한다는 사실을 인지하면서 더욱 강화되고 있다. 패션도 이러한 경향으로 다양한 장르와의 접목이 시도되어 패션에서 얻는 심리적, 상징적 만족감에 주목하기 시작했다. 따라서 패션은 회화와 조각, 건축, 미디어 아트 등 다른 예술분야의 개념과 기법, 스타일 등 미학적 특성을 응용하여 표현의 영역을 넓히고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)작가인 브래들리 워커 톰린의 회화를 작품의 모티프로 선택하여 응용하였다. 톰린 회화의 조형적 특성은 속도감 있는 선의 표현, 자유로우면서 균형 잡힌 붓 터치 및 반복적인 색면 구성이다. 이러한 톰린 회화의 조형미를 작품의 모티프로 응용함에 있어서 울 번 아웃 기법과 펠트를 활용하여 회화적인 이미지의 질감이 풍부한 소재를 연구하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 회화를 응용한 새로운 패션디자인의 모티프를 제시하고 울 번 아웃 기법을 응용한 새로운 패션 소재를 연구하여 사용함으로써 패션디자인의 표현 영역을 확대함에 있다. 연구 방법으로는 관련 전문서적의 문헌 고찰, 간행물, 선행 연구, 인터넷 사이트를 통해 톰린의 회화와 회화를 응용한 패션을 분석하고, 기존의 컬렉션에서 나타나는 현대 패션의 응용 사례를 고찰 했다. 자료는 수록된 자료의 수와 정확한 분류가 이루어진 인터넷 패션 전문 사이트를 중심으로 조사했다. 울 번 아웃 가공의 고찰을 위해 선행 연구된 자료와 직접 실험을 통해 효과적으로 표현 할 수 있는 약품과 조제 비율, 농도, 탄화 온도를 결정 했다. 펠트 니들펀치 기법은 회화의 색감과 붓 터치 형태를 자연스럽게 표현하기 위해 부분적으로 사용하였다. 이를 토대로 실물 작품의상 8점을 제작하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 회화 속 조형적 특성은 디자이너에게 창조적이고 다양한 상상이나 모순된 결합에 대한 구상 등 세련된 해결책을 제시함으로써 훌륭한 모티프를 제공한다. 패션디자인에 있어 회화는 새로운 시각을 바탕으로 상호작용하는 영역을 확대함으로써 미적 반향에 부응하는 독창적 디자인의 원천이 될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 패션 작품의 모티프는 브래들리 워커 톰린 회화에 나타난 속도감 있는 선의 표현과 자유로우면서 균형 잡힌 붓 터치, 반복적인 색면 구성의 조형적인 특성을 응용함으로써 회화적이면서도 다이내믹한 붓 터치가 부여하는 우연의 미를 패션 작품에 표출 할 수 있었다. 패션 작품의 색채 표현은 톰린 회화에 나타난 색채적 특성인 명도와 채도 차이를 응용하여 원근감 표현에 의한 중첩 이미지를 표현 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 표현 기법으로는 용해제를 묘염기법으로 그려 탄화시키는 울 번 아웃 기법과 펠트 니들 펀치 기법으로 톰린 회화의 회화적인 붓 터치 느낌을 표현하는데 사용하였다. 울 번 아웃 기법은 직물의 소프트한 재질감과 플레인 하드한 재질감의 대비 효과를 극대화 할 수 있게 하였다. 또한 펠트 니들 펀치 기법은 다양한 색채를 자유롭게 나타낼 수 있으며 중첩된 이미지 표현을 가능하게 함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 브래들리 워커 톰린 회화에 나타난 다양한 선과 색면의 활용으로 표현된 조형적 특징을 의상에 표현하기 위해 울 번 아웃 기법과 펠트 니들펀치 기법을 활용하여 패션 디자인의 표현 영역을 넓힐 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 추상표현주의가 주는 모티프의 활용도를 제고시키기 위해 의상 작품과 번 아웃 기법뿐만 아니라 다양한 소재 표현 기법이 이번 연구를 발판으로 더욱 다양하게 연구되어지기를 바란다. 이러한 노력은 회화 작품과 패션의 접목을 통해 독창적이고 창의적인 감각의 패션 이미지를 창출 하는데 도움이 될 것이라 생각한다.;Contemporary arts appear to expand areas of expression via exchanges and collaborations with other genres beyond boundaries and have the tendency of convergence where boundaries between the genres become unclear. Designers who seek to be creative and unique began to think that they could adapt other fields of arts such as painting, sculpture, and architecture, which were hard to access before. Such change of attitudes among designers has become more widespread as they realize that people today pursue a unique life with their own style and philosophy when they have a higher standard of living and become richer with the help of social development. Keeping pace with this trend, fashion also began to pay attention on psychological and symbolic satisfaction gained from fashion as a result of fusion with a variety of genres. Therefore, fashion has been broadening its horizon of expression by adapting aesthetic characteristics including concepts, techniques and styles of other fields of arts such as painting, sculpture, architecture, and media art. In this respect, this study is about an application of painting of abstract expressionism artist Bradley Walker Tomlin as the motif for artwork. In figurative sense, his painting is characterized by speedy lines, free and balanced brush work, and repetitive color field design. To adapt these features of his painting for the motif of work, we examined materials with abundant picturesque image texture on the basis of wool burn-out and felt techniques. This study aims to propose a new motif of fashion design based on painting and expand the realm of fashion design expression by examining and using a whole new material of fashion based on wool burn out technique. In methodology, we assessed his painting and painting-applied fashion by means of literature review of related professional books and publications, previous studies, and websites and examined examples of application of contemporary fashion found in existing collections. Data were collected largely from websites specializing in fashion considering the number of data available and the accuracy of classification. To look into wool burn-out processing, we determined from reports of previous studies and direct experiments chemicals, ratio of preparation, concentration, and carbonizing temperatures that can make effective expression possible. Felt needle punch was used in part to make color sense of paintings and brush work more natural. As a result, we produced eight pieces of clothes. Conclusions of the study are as follows: First, figurative features of painting provide a great motif for designers by suggesting a sophisticated solution such as creative and diverse imagination or design of contradictory combination. In fashion design, painting can serve as a source of unique design to meet aesthetic sensation by expanding the realm of interaction in a new perspective. Second, using figurative features of Bradley Walker Tomlin's painting such as speedy lines, free and balanced brush work, and repetitive color field design as the motif of fashion work made it possible to express the beauty of coincidence achieved by picturesque and dynamic brush work in fashion work. When it came to color expression of fashion, perspective was given to express overlap images by applying the difference between brightness and chroma in his painting. Third, technically, wool burn-out and felt needle punch in which the solvent is carbornized with drawing dyeing were used to express picturesque brush work found in his painting. The contrast of soft texture of wool burn-out fabrics and plaint hard texture was maximized. In addition, felt needle punch was found to be available for free expression of various colors and expression of overlap images. In this study, we employed wool burn-out and felt needle punch techniques as a way to reflect figurative features of Bradley Walker Tomlin's painting such as diverse lines and use of color field on clothing, which is expected to broaden the realm of expression of fashion design. We hope that this study will pave the way for a variety of studies on expression techniques of various materials as well on fashion works and burnt-out technique in an attempt to boost the use of motif from abstract expressionism. Such studies are expected to help create fashion images of unique and creative sense by combining painting and fashion.
