폴 윌리스의 저항이론을 바탕으로 한 무용창작작품 「남겨진 상실」에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날 고도로 발전된 사회에서 극심한 경쟁주의와 일률적인 제도화는 인격의 획일화를 초래하였으며 이에 따른 여러 가지 문제들이 발생하고 있다. 사회 제도권은 개인의 개성과 다양성을 요구하면서도 자본주의 산업사회에서 유용한 가치와 인성으로 하는 평균화된 인간을 양성하고 있다. 이와 같은 상황은 무분별한 가치와 지식을 습득하려는 인간상으로 나타났으며 자율성과 진보성, 그리고 창의성 등의 부재로 인한 발전 가능성의 저하를 야기했다. 개개인의 존재의식을 의미하는 주체성은 우리의 삶의 방향과 가치의 정립을 위해서 확립해야할 뿐 만 아니라 향상된 삶을 위해 회복해야한다. 그 방법으로 인간의 능동성과 주체성을 주요 기능으로 보고 있는 ‘저항’을 통해 주체성을 확립할 수가 있는데, 저항행위는 인간을 주체적 의지를 가진 존재로 보는 독자적인 반항행동을 일컬으며 이를 적절하게 사용하였을 때 개개인의 주체성 회복이 가능하다고 본다. 본 연구는 사회교육학자 폴 윌리스(Paul Willis)의 저항이론(Resistance Theory)에 근거하여 창작된 무용작품「남겨진 상실」(2012)에 대한 분석으로 이루어진다. 폴 윌리스에 의하면 인간은 사회구조가 요구하는 대로 그 성격이 규정되어지는 것이 아니라 불평등한 구조에 저항, 도전, 비판하는 능동적인 존재로서 그에 대한 모순을 인식하여 집단구조의 개혁을 주요하게 요구할 수 있다. 따라서 연구자는 개인의 존재성과 다양성이 외면 받는 사회의 일면을 바라보고 주체성을 회복하기 위한 저항의 가치와 필요성에 주목하였다. 무용작품「남겨진 상실」에서는 저항이라는 심리학적인 특성을 시작으로 저항의 발단, 주체성의 회복, 대안적 체제의 성립이라는 세 가지 장면으로 구성하였다. 무대를 위의 장면과 동일하게 구분하여 상징적 영역으로 설정하였으며, 주제 및 내용, 장면별 구성, 오브제의 의미, 이동경로 및 움직임으로 작품을 분석하였다. 작품의 1장에서는 저항이 시작되는 장면으로, 주체성을 잃은 채 수동적으로 살아가는 인간의 내면을 다루었다. 수동적인 삶을 강요하는 현재의 환경을 나타내기 위한 방법으로 억압의 환경을 상징하는 오브제를 독립된 공간에 위치하여 무용수 움직임의 범위를 제한하였다. 오브제 안에 쓰러진 무용수는 일어서지 못하는 무기력한 움직임과 무너지기, 꺽기의 불편한 동작으로 불안함과 자괴감을 나타내었다. 또한 오브제와 접촉하여 저항의 시도를 이미지화함과 동시에 순차적인 저항의 강도를 조절하였다. 2장은 저항에 성공한 무용수가 더 나은 발전을 위한 새로운 체제의 구축을 이루고자 끊임없이 욕망을 표출하는 과정을 내용으로 하고 있다. 연구자는 오브제의 가변성을 이용하여 그 곳에서 벗어나 저항에 성공한 주체를 표현하였고 신체를 이용한 소리와 효과음을 통해 강렬한 저항의 의지를 표현하며 작품 내용의 전개를 이끌었다. 무용수 다리의 강한 움직임과 손끝과 발끝이 가지는 말단부위의 지시적 특성을 사용하여 대안적 체제의 구역인 상수방향을 부각함으로써 새로운 체제에 대한 갈망을 강조하고자 하였다. 또한 강렬한 정서를 연상시키는 무용수의 냉담한 시선과 결연한 표정, 그리고 직선 경로를 사용하여 무용수의 새로운 체제를 형성하려는 강한 의지와 열망을 나타내었다. 3장은 대안적 체제를 성립하는 과정으로, 진취적인 삶을 위한 욕망과 욕구가 결국 대안적 체제를 구축한다는 내용을 담고 있다. 저항을 통한 주체성의 회복은 대안적 체제의 성립을 가능하게 하는데 장면의 전개를 위해 1장의 붉은색 사각틀의 오브제와 동일한 형태의 파란색 사각조명을 사용하여 주제적 표현인 대안적 체제의 의미를 효과적으로 나타내고자 하였다. 무대 공간에서 오브제와 조명이 위치한 사선의 대칭구도는 현 체제를 반영한 대안적 체제의 안정감과 견고함을 나타내주었다. 또한 1장의 저항의 강렬한 동작구를 물 흐르듯이 진행되는 부드러운 움직임의 특질로 전환하여 저항의 의미가 수용의 의미로 변화되는 것으로 표현하였다. 본 연구는 사회교육학자 폴 윌리스의 저항이론을 바탕으로 창작한 무용작품「남겨진 상실」을 통해 저항을 통한 주체성의 회복이 현재보다 발전된 삶의 환경을 성립하게 한다는 메시지를 전달하며 저항의 긍정적 당위성을 주장하고자 하였다. 또한 변화하는 사회 속에서 저항과 주체성의 확고한 개념은 범사회적인 관점으로 확대되었을 때 고도로 발전된 현대사회가 인격의 획일화를 촉진시키는 것이 아니라 인간의 개성화를 도우는 것이라고 해석할 수 있다. 이는 우리가 주체성을 확립해야할 타당성을 가지며 앞으로 저항의 긍정적인 효과를 기대할 수 있을 것이라 본다. ;The extreme laissez-faire and uniform institutionalization of the high-developed society of today have brought about uniform personality of human beings and thus have caused several problems. The social system requires characteristic, and diversity of individuals, but on the other hand it only nurtures the standardized humans requiring the value and personality merely necessary for the capitalistic society. It downgrades the potential to develop by producing humans who learn value and knowledge thoughtlessly and taking away autonomy, progressivity, and creativity from them. The independence which refers to the awareness of each individual needs to be established for settlement of direction of our lives and value, and also be recovered for the better life. Resistance is one of the ways to build up independence. It treats activeness and independence as the main function. Resistance means rebelling behaviors of human which perceives as a being with independent volition. When used right, the resistance can recover the independence of each individual. This research is analyzes the dance creation「Remnant Loss」(2012), which is based on the Resistance Theory of Paul Willis, a social educationalist. According to Willis, humans are not regulated as the social structure requires. On the contrast, humans, as an active actor which opposes, challenges, and criticizes the unequal system, can perceive the contradiction in the system and further, require reformation of group structure. Thus, the researcher intends to discuss the problems of uniform system by showing a part of our society which extorts the human independence, and to argue the necessity and value of resistance in order to recover the independence. The art piece,「Remnant Loss」, starting from the psychological features of resistance, is composed of three scenes: the introduction of resistance, recovery of independence, and establishment of alternative system. It choreographs mainly by theme, story, and structure of the scenes, meanings of object d'art, movements and routes. Also, by giving symbolism to the stage space, it effectively expresses its theme throughout the thematic development. The first scene, in which the resistance begins, draws the inner part of human being living passively without independence. In order to express the current environment in which forces the passive life of individuals, it limits the range of dancers' movements by putting the object d'art which symbolizes the suppressing surrounding in a separate place. The collapsed dancer inside the objet expressed insecurity and dejection through lethargic movement fall- down and rigid bending of body. Also, by contacts with the object, it visualizes the intention to oppose, and at the same time, controls the intensity of resistance in consecutive order. The second scene consistently expresses the craving for the new system so as to develop more. The researcher demonstrates the actor who has succeeded in resistance, away from the oppressing surrounding using the variability of the object d'art. Also, the piece displays indomitable will of opposition by making sound effects with body. Not only that, the strong volition of the dancer to form a new system is shown by a straight course, and it reminds of a powerful artistic expression. By manipulating the dancer’s strong movement and inherent characteristics of hands and feet, the dancer shows aspiration for a new system from alternative perspective. With the dancer’s indifferent glance and resolute facial expression, the dancer also shows her desire by using the straight path to form a new system. The third scene is about the process of establishing alternative system, which concludes that the ambition and craving for active life ultimately constructs the alternative system. The recovery of independence through resistance enables settlement of alternative system, and in order to express so, the researcher uses blue square-shaped light which reminds of the red squared frames (the object d'art used in scene 1). The symmetrical structure of the object, and the straight line, demonstrates stability and solidity of the alternative system, which reflects the current society. Moreover, it changes the powerful movements of the scene 1 into soft movements, and induces the change of the meaning of resistance to the meaning of acceptance. This research conveys the message that the recovery of independence through resistance constructs better life than that of the current environment by the dance creation「Remnant Loss」which is based on the Resistance Theory of Paul Willis. Also, it argues the ultimate appropriateness of the resistance. It also can be interpreted in a way that the concept of resistance and independence extends into the modern society. In a changing society, this does not promote uniformity while encouraging individualism Therefore; we can expect that uniformity will make resistance more effective.
