Abstract
Recently, the multi-channel age of TV news has started in earnest since introduction of the new general programming channels and news channels. Today's news programs also show a substantial change in content and form. This study noted that the shift to multi-channel age like this is accelerating further and pointed out that previous studies don't reflect these changes to understand news audience. Thus, this study has focused on the difference of TV news viewing motives and gratifications of groups categorized by channel viewing type and looked into their determinants. As a result, today's news channel viewing type was largely divided into two groups. The first group included viewers who watch news programs on terrestrial channels and cable news channels. The second group included viewers who watch news programs on all forms of news channels including general programming TV channels. Comparisons of two groups have found that viewers who watch news on all forms of channels have more multi-dimensional news viewing motives than the first group, such as in 'depth/multi-viewpoint information seeking' motive and 'differentiated news seeking' motive. The results also appeared similarly in news gratifications factors. One of the most noticeable point of the study is the fact that ' reliability seeking' factor appeared in both news viewing motives and gratifications. This means that news viewers take reliability from a broadcasting company and news into great consideration when they try to watch news and also after watching news. Furthermore, the study found that seeking reliability motive is the most predictive factor that influences gratification factors most. These results let people who make news realize that they should focus their effort on reliability management. In the multi-channel viewer's group, political orientation was found as the most important predictor to 'reliability seeking' in both news viewing motives and gratifications. Particularly, in the multi-channel viewer's group, the more conservative they are, the more reliable they think the news is. This means today's news provide greater satisfaction to conservative news viewers who watch news on multi-channel. However, generally today's news viewers are not satisfied with news reliability and entertainment which they think as important factor. Therefore, people who make news should put a lot of effort to understand news viewers and establish trust continually.;최근 다수의 유료 종합편성채널과 신규 보도전문채널이 새롭게 등장하면서 방송뉴스의 다채널화가 본격화되고 있다.
