한국영화음악의 분석연구를 통한 음악적 고찰

Abstract

한국영화는 1000만 관객 시대가 열리고 양적 성장과 더불어 질적 성장을 하였다. 이는 멀티 플렉스(multiplex)의 등장과 대기업의 영화산업 참여의 증대로 스크린 수와 관객 수가 증가하고, 부산국제영화제를 비롯한 국내에서 열리는 국제영화제가 성장하고 세계적인 영화제로 자리매김함으로써 한국영화의 위상이 높아지고 국외에서의 한국영화에 대한 관심으로 이어지고 있는 점이 뒷받침된다. 또한, 2000년에 <춘향 뎐>(1999)이 한국영화 최초로 칸 영화제에서 감독상을 받은 것을 비롯하여 베를린영화제, 베니스영화제 등의 세계적인 영화제에서 주목을 받는 영화들이 등장하였다. 이러한 한국영화의 발전과 함께 영화음악도 성장하였으며, 현재 한국영화음악에 대한 음악사적 위치와 특성을 알아보기 위해서는 지속적이며 체계적인 연구가 필요하다. 본 논문은 최근 한국영화음악의 경향을 알아보기 위하여 대종상, 청룡영화상, 대한민국영화대상에서 2000년∼2009년 사이에 음악상을 받은 21편의 작품을 중심으로 2000년 이후의 한국영화음악의 경향을 여러 방면으로 알아보고자 하였다. 연구의 과정에서 드라마 7편, 음악영화 7편, 시대극(사극) 4편, 액션 2편, 애니메이션 1편의 5개 장르로 구분의 필요성을 느꼈으며 음악의 인•아웃, 악기의 편성, 테마 선율의 유무 등의 음악적 분석을 통하여 음악의 특성을 살펴보았다. 드라마의 음악은 내러티브(narrative)와 밀접한데, 현악기를 주로 사용하여 서정성과 감정의 전달을 중요시한다. 현악기는 넓은 음역과 섬세한 셈 여림의 표현이 이를 뒷받침한다. 음악영화의 음악은 주인공의 직업에 따라서 중심이 되는 악기의 편성이 다르다. 또한, 음악이 영화의 전반을 이끌어 나가며 중요한 역할을 한다. 2004년∼2008년 사이에는 음악영화의 수상이 많았으며, 영화에서 음악의 중요성을 더욱 잘 보여주는 시기였다. 시대극(사극)의 음악은 그 시대와 인물을 반영하는 악기로 편성된다. 또한, 역사적 사실을 중심으로 한 작품은 국악기만을 사용하고, 역사적 사실을 재구성한 작품은 국악기와 양악기의 조화로 음악을 작곡하였다. 액션의 음악은 리듬을 중요시하며 인물의 동작과 장면의 속도감을 뒷받침한다. 그리하여 긴박함과 긴장감을 고조시킨다. 애니메이션의 음악은 어쿠스틱 악기들로는 목가적인 분위기와 감성적 표현을 다양한 전자음과 컴퓨터 프로그래밍으로는 신비감과 판타지적 표현을 하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 2000년 이후의 한국영화음악은 인물의 성격과 심리의 변화, 장면의 분위기를 반영하며 내러티브(narrative)와 밀접한 음악들이 작곡되고 음악이 중요한 요소로서 등장함을 알 수 있었다. 이처럼 한국영화음악은 영화를 위한 음악으로 더욱 자리매김하고 있으며, 영화의 완성도를 높이는 중요한 요소이다. 그러므로 영화음악 작곡가는 연출의도에 대한 충분한 이해와 음악적 표현의 연구로 관객과의 소통을 도와야 할 것이다. 또한, 한국영화음악의 체계적인 연구를 위해서 영화음악의 오리지널 스코어(Original Score)를 통한 연구의 필요성을 느끼며, 많은 문헌과 자료들이 뒷받침되어야 할 것이다.;Entering the era of 10 million tickets, Korean film has achieved improvements quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The number of screens and audiences has increased due to the advent of the multiplex and the increase in participation of major companies in the film industry. Korean film has been elevated in status on the worldwide stage as Korea holds international film festivals, such as the Pusan International Film Festival, which has developed and become one of the notable worldwide film festivals. In 2000, <ChunHyang>(1999) won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival and it was the first international award given to a Korean film. Since then, Korean film has begun to draw attention at the worldwide film festivals such as the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival. With these developments of Korean film, Korean film music also has been developed. In order to research the musical historical status and characteristics of the current Korean film music, a continuous and systematic study is required. To find out the recent trend of Korean film music, this paper explores the trends of Korean film music after 2000 in various ways by analyzing 21 pieces that won awards from 2000 to 2009 at Grand Bell Awards, The Blue Dragon Award and Korean Film Awards. This research categorized 21 pieces into 5 genres and studied characteristics of these pieces by musical analysis such as fade in and fade out, organization of instruments and presence of a theme melody. The 5 categories are as follows: 7 pieces of drama, 7 pieces of musical film, 4 pieces of historical drama, 2 pieces of action film and a piece of animation. Drama music was closely associated with narrative, emphasizing lyricism and the communication of emotions mainly by using string instruments as they express wide range and delicate dynamics. Musical films had a different organization of the pivotal instrument which is determined by the occupation of a main character. Also, music in musical films played an important role, leading the whole story of a movie. This important role had been evident between 2004 and 2008, a period in which musical films won most awards at the three major Korean film festivals mentioned above. Music in historical films was organized with instruments that reflect the time of the historical background and personalities of characters. Music in historical films which were based on a true story utilized Korean traditional instruments, whereas music in films that reimagined true stories was composed in harmony of Korean traditional instruments and Western classical instruments. Music in action films emphasized rhythm and assisted movements of characters and the speed of a scene. Therefore it enhanced suspense and tension. In animation, acoustic instruments expressed pastoral atmosphere and emotions, whereas various electronic sounds and computer programming expressed mystique and fantasy. Findings of this study indicate that Korean film music after 2000 has reflected personalities and emotional changes of characters as well as the atmosphere of scenes. At the same time, film music that was germane to narrative has been composed, being represented as an important element. Thus, Korean film music has become specialized for film and an important element to help aim for perfection. For these reasons, a composer of film music has to help audiences communicate with the story of film by a thorough understanding of directing and a study of the musical expression. For a systematic study of Korean film music, it is necessary to research through Original Score of film music as well as to be supported by a lot of literature and references.
