Abstract
As films have been recognized as one of major genres of arts, film scores are not just a means to prop up visual images of a movie any more in the 21st century. They are a significant part in creating ripple effects by conveying the movie's plot, explaining temporal and spatial settings or alluding to the audience how the movie would unfold. Separated from visual images, film scores came to have value as a cultural business, so the awareness of the importance of roles and significance of them has been raised day by day. Thus, I thought a correlation between visual images and theme music which contains the intention of a composer needed to be studied to produce well-made film scores down the road. This research intended to study musical style of John Williams(1932~ ) and the roles theme music plays in film, analyzing theme music of his major works 'Jaws(1975)', 'Star Wars(1977)', 'E.T.(1982)' and 'Schindler's List(1993)'. All of these works received Academy Awards, so I thought the analysis of them would allow me to understand his own characteristics in film composition. When it comes to methodology, first I looked at history of film score and where Williams gets positioned and also his personal life and compositional works, thus, his musical backgrounds and style. Also, I analyzed the makeup and form of his film scoring, the scenes where theme music gets played and their musical traits, focusing on characters or mood of the movies, according to how the story unfolds. Theme music gets used for scenes which are important to the story development in 'Jaws(1975)', 'Star Wars(1977)', 'E.T.(1982)' and 'Schindler's List(1993)' and the musical components that suit mood of the movies are performed realistically. This study found out that John Williams' theme music is not just background music, but it condenses the story of a movie and sets mood. In his four works above, theme music gets played for scenes or moments important to the overall flow of the movies and it is easy to see that director's intention with the movie is well represented in theme music. Williams chooses the right instruments, musical techniques and tones to suit the genre or mood of a movie, creating his own unique style. I was able to understand that he gives continuity to his works through these changes to effectively make a movie's theme stand out and came to the conclusion that he develops certain melodies corresponding to the situation, following a structure of story. I believe more in-depth studies should be continued for film scores to be produced and developed further in the future.
