제임스 호너(James Horner)의 영화음악에 나타나는 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

21세기 영상매체 시대에 접어들면서 영화는 ‘멀티 미디어 시대의 꽃’ 이라 부를 정도로 인류사에 그 위치가 부각되고 있으며 특히 영화와 음악은 불가분의 관계로서, 영화음악은 단순히 영상을 보조하는 차원을 넘어 시 ,공간적 배경을 설명할 뿐만 아니라 영화의 연속성을 부여하고, 진행감에 도움을 주며 인물의 내면의 심리를 묘사하는 등 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 그로 인해 영화음악이 하나의 독립된 매체적 특성을 확보하였고 그 역할과 그 의미의 중요성에 대한 인식이 날로 더해가고 있다. 본 논문은 헐리우드 영화 음악의 거장 중 한 명인 제임스 호너 (James Honer, 1953~ )의 영화음악 중 아카데미상 후보에 지명되고 평론가들로부터 극찬을 받은 작품 <아폴로 13 (1995)>과 <뷰티풀 마인드 (2001)>을 분석하고자 한다. 작품 배경적 고찰 연구방법으로는 할리우드 영화음악의 개괄적인 흐름과 제임스 호너의 생애와 작품세계를 통해 음악적 배경과 스타일을 살펴보고자 하였고, 스토리 전개에 따른 영상과 음악과의 상관관계를 알아보기 위해 영화의 기승전결 따른 중요한 네 개의 테마를 선별하여 음악적 특징을 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해서 제임스 호너의 영화음악은 정확한 작품의도에 입각하여 주제를 함축적으로 묘사하고 사건의 특징과 인물의 심리를 나타내는 기능을 담당하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이를 위한 작곡기법으로 여러 음악적 요소를 사용하고 있는데 이러한 각 구성요소들의 개별적인 특성들이 유기적으로 결합하여 전체적인 분위기를 조성하고 주제와 메시지를 전달하는데 효과적으로 사용되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 특징들은 독주악기와 적절한 악기 배합에 의한 음색변화, 주제를 함축하고 있는 모티브의 사용, 대조적 선율과 특징적 리듬의 사용을 통한 분위기 고조, 급격한 다이내믹 대조를 통한 힛포인트와 클라이막스 표현, 오케스트라와 인성의 조화를 통한 다양한 사운드로 표출되어 그만의 고유한 색채를 만들어 내었다. 그로 인해 클래식 기초 위에 낭만적이고 서정적인 멜로디 라인을 중요시 하는 그의 음악적 성향과 함께 영화에 반영되어 작품의 스토리와 주제를 효과적으로 전달했으며 영화전체의 분위기를 고조시키며 화면으로의 몰입과 감정이입을 유도하여 효과를 극대화 시키는 중요한 역할을 하고 있다는 결론에 도달하였다.;With the advent of the 21st century dubbed as the era of visual media, movies are highly positioned in human history to the extent of them being called ‘the crown jewel of the era of multimedia’. As music, in particular, is inseparable from movies, film music goes beyond just giving visual images some extra help. It not only explains spatial and temporal settings, but also plays pivotal roles including giving continuity to a film, helping it proceed and describing what characters feel inside. Thus, film music has had its own traits as an independent medium, raising awareness of its roles and significance. The paper is intended to analyze the film scores of ‘Apollo 13(1995)’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind(2001)’ written by one of great film score composers in Hollywood, James Horner(1953~ ) which were critically-acclaimed and earned him Academy Awards nominations. I looked at the general history of Hollywood film music and Horner’s personal life and film scoring to have insight into his musical backgrounds and style. Also, I selected and analyzed musical features of four important themes which suit the four steps of introduction, development, turn and conclusion to understand the link between visual image and music in story development. I was able to figure out that Horner’s works were capable of implicitly describing a theme of a movie and presenting certain characteristics of what happens in a movie and also what the characters feel inside, based on the accurate interpretation of the intentions of a director with the movie. A variety of musical components are used as compositional techniques and individual characteristics of each component are organically integrated to establish overall tone and deliver theme and message. These characteristics include changes in tone created by solo instruments and proper combinations of them, the use of motif which implies the theme, the escalation of tension set by contradictory melodies and distinctive rhythms, the display of hit points and climax via drastic contrast and diverse sounds generated by the harmony of orchestra and human voice, leading to unique colors of his own. Thus, I came to the conclusion that along with Horner’s musical inclination to put emphasis on romantic and lyrical melody lines based on classical music, the characteristics above were reflected in the films to deliver the story and theme effectively and also played an important role to escalate the overall tensions of the films, maximizing the effects by allowing the audience to be caught up in the screen and sympathize with the characters.
