존 파웰 (John Powell)의 애니메이션 음악에 나타난 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

현대 사회에 들어서면서 멀티미디어 영상의 발달과 더불어 애니메이션도 하나의 대중예술로 새로운 영역으로 자리 잡고 있다. 이렇게 애니메이션의 중요성이 부각되면서 애니메이션의 구성요소인 음악도 중요하게 인식되어가고 있다. 본 연구는 존 파웰(John Powell, 1963)의 작품을 연구 분석하였다. 존 파웰은 미국에서 가장 활발히 작품 활동을 하는 음악가 중 한 사람으로, 애니메이션과 영화 음악의 새로운 스타일을 만들고 효과음을 하나의 음악 언어로 넓힌 작곡가이다. 본 논문에서는 애니메이션 <해피 피트(Happy Feet)>, <아이스 에이지 2(Ice Age 2: The Meltdown)>의 중요 음악들을 분석하여 존 파웰의 음악적 특성을 알아보았다. 연구 방법으로는 먼저 존 파웰의 생애와 작품을 통해 음악적 배경과 작품 경향을 보았다. 그의 작품에서 영상과 음악의 상관관계를 분석하고, 악기의 음색과 분위기, 동작을 음악으로 어떻게 표현하였는지 찾아내려 하였다. 연구 결과 존 파웰의 음악적 특징은 애니메이션의 분위기와 동작을 음색과 편곡을 통해서 표현하여 스토리에 친숙하게 다가 설수 있도록 하였다는 것이다. 배경을 표현하기 위하여 그에 맞는 악기 음색으로 연주하고, 관객들이 알고 있는 음악을 개사하고 빠른 현대 음악으로 편곡하였다. 또한, 동작을 표현하기 위하여 리듬감이 많이 강조되었다. 본 연구를 통해서 존 파웰의 음악은 애니메이션의 분위기를 이끌어가며 스토리 상황을 고조시키고, 나아가 관객으로 하여금 애니메이션에 더 몰입하게 되고 정감을 느끼게 하는 역할을 한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 앞으로 애니메이션 음악의 발전과 더욱 효과적인 음악의 제작을 위해 체계적이고 지속적인 연구가 계속 이루어져야 할 것이다.;Animation takes a new field position as one public art together with development of multi-media video images in the modern society. As prominence of the importance of animation emerges like this, music, which is an element of composition of animation is also being recognized as important. This study has researched and analyzed the art works of Powell. (1963) John Powell is one of musicians, who are working actively in the USA, and is a composer who made a new style of animation and movie music and expanded sound effect as one music language. In this thesis, musical characteristics of animation of John Powell were found out by analyzing his important music of <Happy Feet> and <(Ice Age 2: The Meltdown)>. As research method, first of all, musical background and trends of his art works were examined through the entire life and art works of John Powell. In his art works, correlation between video images and music was analyzed and tried to find out how did he express timbre, mood and motion of musical instruments in music. As the result of the research, musical characteristics of John Powell was that mood and motion of animation were expressed through timbre and arrangement so that it can approach to the story familiar and friendly. He played in the conforming tone of musical instrument in order to express the background, changed lyrics of music spectators knew and re-arranged into the fast modern music. In addition, he emphasized a sense of rhythm a lot in order to express motions. Through this study, it was found out that John Powell's music leads the mood of animation and played a role to make spectators to immerse into animation further by making the situations of the story more excited. Systematic and continuous research shall be carried out in the future for the development of animation music and production of more effective music.
