은하계 이미지의 자수표현

Abstract

Mankind has long been concerned about the galaxy. Its mystique and splendor have always stimulated numerous artists to express it. However, many artists have refused the fixed idea of reproducing the galaxy intact and instead, have exerted their creativity to recompose and re-create it anew according to their subjectivity. The purpose of this study was to select the galaxy as a specific object for expression and thereby, reinterpret the 'dot' or one of the formative elements composing the images of the galaxy in a formative way to express diverse images of the galaxy on the art works using the plastic as a medium. In order to express most properly the images of the galaxy reflecting the lights, the new materials or plastics were positively used for the art works, while diverse plastic materials were applied to the art works to render a variety of expressions. Then, such a technique was applied to four modern embroidery works. The relevant theories were reviewed in the following ways; First, the general characteristics of the plastic materials used for expression of the galaxy images were reviewed, and thereupon, the types of the materials were classified. Second, the characteristics of the galaxy were analyzed in comparison with its concept and its image elements, and the 'dot' or one of such elements was analyzed from a formative viewpoint. Third, the galaxy images shown in modern art works and textile art were analyzed in comparison with researcher's works expressing them as 'dots'. Moreover, the works produced by the artists using the plastic materials were analyzed to review their effects. The modern embroidery works were produced to express the set and diffusion of the 'dots' or the formative elements of the galaxy images. For the works, the plastic materials characterized by different reflections of lights depending on angles of view were used, while silk, metal thread, pearl acryl dyestuff and rubber string were used to express the galaxy images more effectively. The embroidery technique used for this study was to express the galaxy images consisting of the 'dots' derived from numbers of dots, knots and variegations. In addition, such mechanic embroidery techniques as zig-zag stitching and linear stitching were used together with the manual embroidery to effectively express the beauty of the galaxy free but ordered. As a result of analyzing the galaxy images and producing the embroidery works, the following conclusions could be drawn; First, the plastic materials were positively applied to the embroidery works only to expand the scope of the material expressions for the modern embroidery. 'Materials' are basic media determining the characteristics of a work, particularly the textile art works. Owing to development of the modern science and civilization, a variety of materials have been developed to expand the scope of material selections, and particularly, the plastic materials have been diversely developed for production of unique works. This study suggests the possibility of producing a variety of modern embroidery works by using diverse materials. Second, cubic sense of texture could be diversely and richly expressed on the planar plastic materials for embroidery works. The mystique of the galaxy could be effectively expressed by using plastic materials, silver yarn, gold yarn and silk yarn in a harmonious way. Third, since the plastic materials look transparent, transluscent or opaque depending on their temperature heated, they may well be effectively used to be folded or shaped to express a sense of depth or volume on the canvas. It is hoped that this study will encourage artists to experiment the creative forms continuously using other new materials than the traditional ones. It is also hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will create diverse embroidery works as understanding of the conventional textile materials becomes deeper and new materials are being developed. ;은하계는 예로부터 인간의 끝없는 관심의 대상이었다. 그 신비스러움과 장엄함은 많은 예술가들로 하여금 늘 표현하고자 하는 충동을 유발시켰다. 이에 많은 예술가들은 은하계를 그대로 재현한다는 고정관념을 거부하고, 예술가의 독창성을 중시하여 자신의 주관에 의해 새롭게 재구성한 창조된 은하계를 표현하였다. 본 연구는 은하계를 자수 작품의 구체적인 표현 대상으로 선정하고, 은하계 이미지를 구성하는 조형적 요소 중에 '점'을 조형적 시각으로 재해석하여 다양한 은하계의 이미지를 플라스틱 소재를 매체로 작품으로 제작하였다. 빛의 반사에 의해 달라지는 다양한 은하계의 이미지를 효과적으로 표현하기 위하여 다양한 플라스틱 소재를 작품에 활용함으로써 현대자수 표현방법의 다양성을 연구하는데 그 목적을 두고, 작품 4점을 제작하여 분석하였다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 은하계의 개념을 알아보고, 은하계의 이미지를 구성하는 요소인 '점'을 조형적 시각으로 분석하였다. 둘째, 은하계 이미지의 표현매체로 사용한 플라스틱 소재의 특성을 알아보고, 플라스틱 소재의 종류를 조사, 분석하였다. 셋째, 플라스틱 소재를 이용한 여러 형태의 섬유 작품을 통하여 플라스틱 소재를 사용하였을 때 나타나는 표현효과를 연구하였다. 넷째, 현대미술 및 섬유미술 속에 나타난 은하계 이미지를 조형의 기본요소인 '점'으로부터 표현한 작가의 작품을 비교, 분석하였다. 작품제작은 은하계 이미지를 조형의 요소인 '점'의 집합과 확산을 중심으로 구성하였다. 재료는 시점에 따라 빛의 반사가 다르게 표현되는 플라스틱 소재를 중심으로 견사, 금속사, 펄 아크릴 물감, 고무줄 등을 사용하였으며, 은하계 이미지를 보다 효과적으로 표현하고자 하였다. 자수기법으로는 점수, 매듭수와 징금수를 응용하여 점으로부터 구성되는 은하계 이미지를 표현하였다. 그 외에도 기계수인 지그재그 박음질, 직선 박음질을 손수와 함께 사용하여, 손수와 기계수를 병용함으로써 자유로움 속에서도 질서가 있는 은하계의 아름다움을 효과적으로 표현하고자 의도하였다. 은하계 이미지를 분석하고 자수 작품을 제작하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 플라스틱 소재의 선택은 빛에 의해 반사되는 은하계의 이미지를 표현하는데 매우 효과적이었다. 둘째, 은하계 이미지 표현을 위하여 사용한 플라스틱 소재와 은사, 금사, 견사, 폴리우레탄, 랩, 고무줄 등 다양한 소재의 조화로 현대자수의 소재표현 영역을 확대할 수 있었다. 셋째, 자수를 통하여 평면의 플라스틱 소재에 입체적 표면질감을 다양하고 풍부하게 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 플라스틱 소재는 그 자체뿐만 아니라 열을 가했을 때 생기는 투명, 반투명, 불투명의 효과로 인해 겹쳐진 재료나 형태에 영향을 주어 화면의 깊이감과 입체감을 표현하는 데 효과적이었다. 본 연구를 바탕으로 섬유만을 매체로 표현되어왔던 전통방법에서 새로운 소재에 대한 조형적 실험과 창의적인 표현방법에 대해 지속적으로 연구하고자 한다. 기존의 섬유재료에 대해 더 깊은 이해와 탐구 그리고 새로운 소재의 개발과 함께 효과적인 표현방법에 있어서 자수의 무한한 가능성에 대한 지속적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.
