;Chosun dynasty suppressed Buddhism, while promoting Confucianism. Thus, Confucian scholars thought that just and nobly poor life was important. Such a tendency influenced fine art during Chosun dynasty when ink paintings, white porcelains, natural woodcrafts and other naturalistic fine art were developed. Although Confucianism dominated the society, Buddhism and Taoism had their own influences, developing colorful fine art such as Buddhist paintings for temples. During Chosun dynasty, not only the main hall doors such as Daeungjeon, Kukrakjeon and Birojeon but also Bodhisattva doors including Kwanunjeon and Mirukjeon were decorated colorfully with flower lattices. The patterns used for such flower lattices were lotus flower, peony, chrysanthemum, bamboo, pine tree, fish, flower vase, etc., and these patterns had religious and symbolic meanings as well as some decorative functions. The purpose of this study is to review the symbolicity of the flower patterns shown on the Buddhist temples during Chosun dynasty and thereby, analyze their formative characteristics in view of embroidery expressions. For this purpose, concept of our traditional windows/doors, implications of lattice and its changes were reviewed theoretically, and thereupon, types of lattices during Chosun dynasty were surveyed. Second, the symbolic definition of flower lattices was discussed, and their types and formal aesthetics were analyzed. Third, the flower lattices expressed artistically were compared with textile art. Based on such reviews and discussions, flower lattice patterns were simplified into lattices themselves and circle to be expressed symbolically, and thereby, embroidery works were produced. In producing the works, simplified lattices were overlapped. The circle was expressed by applying the flower patterns in terms of plane and line. For work IV, some part of the ground textile was removed for embroidery. Long and short stitches (Jaryeonsu and Jaritsu) were applied to express the flower patterns in two dimension, while button hole stitch and tailor button hole stitch were used to express the flower patterns linearly. In addition, Samipsu and Chilbosu were applied for the ground cloth, while running stitch was used to express the lines. For an overlapping effect, a transparent Nobang was used, while silk yarns were twisted to be used as embroidery yarns. In addition, a woven cloth for embroidery was used for an easy embroidery work. As a result of producing embroidery works applying the flower patterns during Chosun dynasty, the following conclusions were drawn; First, it was possible to realize the minimal expressions of modern art by restructuring the diverse flower patterns into simple forms. Second, it was effective to express the sense of mass and depth by overlapping the transparent Nobang one to five times. Third, it was possible to create a new embroidery expression (embroidered on yarns) by removing some part of the woven cloth. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will experiment diverse and creative embroidery methods applying the flower patterns during Chosun dynasty.-
