전투복을 응용한 현대 밀리터리 룩 디자인연구

Abstract

복식은 착용자의 심리적 상태뿐만 아니라 환경적 요소 및 시대적 상황을 표현하는 것이다. 복잡한 사회에 살고 있는 현대인들은 신체적인 편의를 위해 활동적인 기능성과 이미지를 지닌 패션을 추구한다. 또한, 주5일 근무제의 실시로 인해 패션의 흐름이 정장 중심에서 스포츠·캐주얼 중심으로 옮겨가고 있다. 의복의 기능성에 대한 요구와 21세기 초입(初入)에 발발한 미·이라크 전쟁의 영향으로 밀리터리풍의 캐주얼 스타일이 유행하게 되었다. 이것은 밀리터리 룩의 모티브인 군복의 정형적, 상징적 특성에 기인된 영향력도 있지만, 무엇보다 전투복이 가진 기능성과 활동적 이미지가 캐주얼 디자인의 모티브로 응용되기에 적합하기 때문이다. 더욱이 패션의 하이브리드(hybrid) 현상으로 인해 과거와 달리 캐주얼 의복의 가치가 상승되고, 이질적인 요소들이 믹스(mix), 매치(match)되는 새로운 스타일이 시도되었다. 이러한 시대적 요구와 배경 아래 본 연구의 목적은, 군복이 전쟁의 역사적 부산물이라는 부정적 이미지에서 벗어나, 전투복을 심미적으로 응용함과 동시에 전투복에서 표출되는 활동적 이미지를 여성복에 도입한 의상디자인을 연구하고자 한다. 즉, 전투복의 형태와 기능적인 디테일을 의복의 기능성을 향상시키기 위한 목적보다는, 장식적 요소로서 적극 활용하여 스포티하고 활동적인 이미지의 밀리터리 스타일을 제시하고자 한다. 또한, 전투복의 실용성과 남성적 이미지에 상반되는 여성적인 이미지의 소재와 색상을 사용하여, 활동적 이미지와 함께 여성적이고 고급스러운 밀리터리 룩을 창조함으로써 여성복 디자인에 있어 전투복의 활용 가능성을 타진하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법을 요약하면, 시사지, 패션관련 잡지와 인터넷 정보를 통해 현재 패션의 전체적인 흐름을 이해한 후 밀리터리 룩의 유행에 주목하였다. 서양 복식사를 바탕으로 기존 연구 자료와 컬렉션 자료에 의해 밀리터리 룩의 전반적인 전개 양상 및 특징을 이해하였다. 특히 2000년 이후 최근까지 파리, 밀라노, 뉴욕, 런던, 서울의 주요 컬렉션에서 나타난 경향을 중심으로 밀리터리 룩의 조형적 특징을 형태, 색채, 소재, 디테일로 세분화하여 고찰하였다. 실제 작품 연구를 위해, 1·2차 세계대전 군복을 중심으로 관련 문헌을 통해 군복의 종류 및 특징을 살펴보았다. 특히, 1·2차 대전은 군복의 기능성이 처음 부각된 시점임을 전제로, 장식적 성격이 강한 제복을 배제하고, 전투복의 활동적 기능성에 초점을 맞추어 조형적 특징을 분석하였다. 전투복에 대한 연구 범위를 독일, 영국, 미국의 전투복으로 한정한 것은, 이 3개국이 1·2차 대전의 주축국으로서, 이 국가들의 전투복이 다른 국가에 의해 차용되어 전투복 유형이 서로 유사하게 나타나기 때문이다. 이러한 이론적 연구를 바탕으로, 1·2차 세계대전 전투복의 형태와 기능적 디테일을 여성복에 응용하여 활동적 이미지를 가지면서도, 다양한 소재와 색채를 사용하여 여성적이면서 고급스러운 밀리터리 룩을 디자인하였다. 작품의 모티브로서 필드 재킷(field jacket)과 카고 팬츠(cargo pants), 트렌치 코트(trench coat), 공격 조끼(invasion vest), 항공 점퍼와 항공 팬츠, 항공 수트의 형태와 디테일을 응용하였다. 가슴과 허리가 밀착되는 여성적인 실루엣에, 전투복의 기능적 디테일인 포켓과 지퍼, 벨트 등을 의복의 장식적 요소로서 적극 사용하였다. 특히, 절개선의 응용과 디테일의 다양한 접목 방식을 통해 기존의 밀리터리 패션과 차별화 하고자 하였다. 색상과 소재에 있어서는 군복 고유의 이미지를 탈피하여 다양하게 사용함으로써, 이질적인 요소의 믹스와 매치(mix & match)에 의한 새로운 이미지의 밀리터리 룩을 제시하고자 하였다. 모직을 위주로, 실크, 스웨이드 등의 소재를 사용하여 고급스럽고 여성적인 밀리터리 스타일을 의도하였다. 특히, 현재 전투복에서는 중량의 비효율성으로 인해 타소재로 대체된 가죽 소재와 금속 디테일을 부분적으로 사용하여, 군복 고유의 남성적인 강한 이미지와, 여성적인 실루엣과 파스텔 톤 색채에 의해 여성적으로 전환된 이미지를 조화시켰다. 또한, 전투복의 카키 계열 색상 대신 검정색, 회색, 흰색의 무채색 계열을 사용함으로써, 현대 여성 패션으로서의 활용도를 높임과 동시에 도시적인 세련됨을 표현하였다. 특히, 파스텔 톤의 핑크, 연주황, 연보라, 아이보리 색상으로 확대, 사용하여 여성적인 이미지를 내포한 밀리터리 스타일을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 상·하를 다른 색상으로 매치시켜, 유니폼의 획일적인 이미지에서 벗어나 캐주얼한 분위기를 강조하였다. 이러한 연구 결과 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 밀리터리 패션이 최근에도 지속적으로 유행할 수 있는 이유는, 모티브로 응용되는 군복이 현대 패션이 추구하는 기능성, 활동성과 접목되는 조형적 특징을 가지기 때문이다. 둘째, 전투복의 기능적 형태와 디테일을 응용함으로써 의복에 활동적인 이미지를 구축할 수 있다. 따라서, 전투복이 캐주얼 의복으로서 응용될 수 있다. 셋째, 1·2차 세계대전 전투복은 기능성과 장식성의 상반되는 특징을 만족시킬 수 있는 조형적 요소를 내포한다. 이것은 1·2차 대전이 군복의 기능성이 처음 대두되는 시점임과 동시에 아직 이전 시기의 장식적인 형식미가 다소 남아있기 때문이다. 따라서 이 시기 전투복이 현대 의상 디자인에 응용됨으로써 기능성과 함께 장식적인 효과가 크다. 넷째, 전투복의 디테일을 응용함으로써 다양한 디자인을 전개할 수 있다. 전투복의 디테일은 의복의 장식적 요소로서 다양하게 활용될 뿐만 아니라 실루엣 및 의복의 이미지를 변형시킬 수 있는 중요한 요소로 확장된다. 다섯째, 군복의 디테일을 부분적으로 응용하여도 밀리터리 이미지를 표현할 수 있다. 즉, 디테일의 사용 목적과 위치를 변화시켜도 군복 고유의 이미지는 전달된다. 여섯째, 군복 고유의 소재와 색상을 탈피하여 다양하게 사용하여도 밀리터리 이미지는 표현된다. 즉, 군복의 대표적 색상인 카키 계열을 배제하고, 군복의 보편적 소재인 모직, 면 이외에 실크 등의 여성적 소재로 확대, 사용하여도, 군복의 디테일을 부분적으로 응용함으로써 밀리터리 스타일로 완성되었다. 일곱째, 이질적인 요소와의 믹스를 통해 군복 고유의 남성성과 여성성을 조화시킨 새로운 이미지의 밀리터리 룩을 창조할 수 있다. 즉, 4개의 패치 포켓과 가죽 소재, 금속 디테일에 의한 스포티하고 남성적인 강한 이미지는 파스텔 톤 색채와 실크 등의 부드러운 소재와 사용됨으로써 여성적인 이미지와 융합된 새로운 이미지의 밀리터리 패션이 되었다. 본 연구는 전투복의 호전적 이미지를 탈피하여 조형적으로 재해석된 밀리터리 스타일을 제시하고자 하였다. 앞으로는 반전의 의지와 평화적 메시지를 내포하며, 창의력 있는 밀리터리 패션으로 확대되는 계기가 되길 바란다. 또한 군복이 가진 과학적인 기능성에 초점을 맞추어, 현대인의 감성과 건강, 편의성을 고려하는 인간중심의 디자인으로 미적 범주를 넓히기를 바란다. ;Clothing is a symbol reflecting not only the inner world of person wearing it but also environmental factors surrounding her/him, and a mean to express situation of the times. We living in a highly complex modern society tend to look for apparels with a design providing active functionality and image. In addition, as five-working-day-per-week policy took effect, active and casual wear becomes the center of the modern fashion from formal wear fashion. As a result of great demand for functionality of clothing and recent event of U.S.-Iraq War, a variety of casual wear with military style are recently in vogue. Such popularity of military fashion may be attributed to not only orthodox-looking and symbolic design of military uniforms, which is the motif of military fashion, but also morphological characteristic of the uniform that blends functionality and activeness of clothing, which is the motif that modern casual fashion pursues. Furthermore, owing to hybrid phenomenon of fashion, the value of casual fashion rose unlike in the past, and military fashion has been expanded into a new style in which contrasting images are mixed and matched. Based on such fashion needs and trend of the present time, the main objective of the study was to research fashion design for women's clothing aesthetically utilizing the active image as well as the functional details of military uniform, throwing away the negative image of the uniform as historical by-product of war. In other words, attempts were made to look into a military style which brings out comfort and activeness by introducing functional details and shapes of military uniform into everyday wear. Furthermore, the study was also aimed to attempt a military style with new image by applying functional details of combat uniforms to women's garments as not only a factor enhancing the functionality of clothing but also decorative factor for clothing. That is, it was evaluated if combat uniforms can be used to design women's garments through creating a feminine and elegant military look with active image by applying materials and colors bringing out feminine image instead of practical use and masculine image of combat uniforms. To summarize the study approach, after understanding the general trend in fashion nowadays by researching newspapers and reports, fashion magazines and data available on internet, the focus was given to the military fashion trend. Based on western clothing history, literature review and photo collection were conducted to comprehend general development and characteristics of military look. Special attention and review were given to shapes, colors, materials and details of the military look focusing on the latest trend shown in major collections such as Paris, Milan, New York and London since 2000. Since military look is a design that uses military uniforms as motif, understanding military uniforms was essential. Therefore, investigation was focused on types and common characteristics of military uniforms during World Wars I and II. In particular, considering that the functionality of military uniforms gained power in World Wars I and II, analyses on formative characteristics of military uniforms were centered at functional elements of combat uniforms and the uniforms with strong decorative character were excluded from the study. The theoretical research was limited to combat uniforms of British, German and U.S. Army were used as motif for studying military uniforms and as examples in this study. It was because military uniforms of other countries showed great similarity to those of England, Germany and the United States as these countries were primary leaders of World Wars I and II and main suppliers of the uniforms to their alleys. Through this theoretical research, feminine military casual apparels were designed and produced by applying shapes and functional details of World Wars I and II's military uniforms for creating an active image. Motif of the work was mainly shapes and details of field jacket, cargo pants, trench coat, invasion vest, and flight jacket. At the same time, details such as pocket, zipper and belt that have functional use in military uniforms were decoratively applied to the feminine bust and waist lines of clothing to let out the image of military look. In addition, an effort was made to create a new military look distinct from existing military looks by applying incision lines and combining a variety of details. Furthermore, it was attempted to create a new image of military look that combines heterogeneous elements (i.e., mix and match) by eliminating typical image of military uniforms in color and material. To express refined and feminine military look, the wool was the main material used and silk, suede and other variety of high quality materials were also employed as appropriate. Yet, leather and metal ornaments which were characteristic of military uniforms of World Wars I and II, were applied in part to add typical masculine image of military uniforms to the feminine image of the new experimental military look due to shapes and colors. Achromatic colors, such as black and white, were used instead of khaki which is the representative military uniform color in order to portray a refined city-look on clothing as well as enhance its utility as modern women's fashion. Moreover, color selection was expanded to soft pastel colors such as pink, orange, purple and ivory for much more feminine image of military look. To emphasize casual look away from uniform look, different colors were coordinated for the top and bottom of each outfit. Conclusions of the research are as follows. First, reasons that military fashion using military uniform as motif has continued to be in vogue over the times are: a) the standard and symbolic design of military uniform and b) morphological characteristic of the uniform which blend functionality and activeness of clothing as modern fashion pursues those. Second, applying functional shapes and details of combat uniforms can bring the active image onto apparels, providing a motif to fashion design. Third, combat uniforms of World Wars I and II contain formative factors satisfying both functionality and decorative effect of modern fashion design. Fourth, a variety of designs can be created by utilizing details of combat uniforms as those can be used for decoration and also influence the image of clothing. Fifth, military look can be brought in by applying details of military uniforms in part even though purpose and location of those details are different from those on military uniforms. Sixth, military image can be expressed even if materials and colors which are not typical for military uniform were used. In other word, a lovely military casual look could be created by simply applying functional details of military uniforms to soft materials such as wool, cotton and even silk without khaki colors. Seventh, a new military look and style containing both masculine and feminine images can be created by combining heterogeneous elements. It was sufficient to portray a lovely feminine military casual look combining details such as 4 patch pockets, leather material and metal ornaments which represent masculine image of military uniform with soft pastel colors and soft materials like silk. This study aimed to portray formatively reinterpreted military look shedding offensive nature of military uniforms. It is my hope that this becomes an opportunity for military look, using military uniform as motif, to be expanded into a creative style incorporating peaceful message, transforming into clothing symbolizing anti-war purpose and peace. It is also hoped that the functionality of military uniforms will be taken into consideration for fashion design caring our emotion, health and comfort.
