영화 <스타워즈 에피소드I>의 음악적 분석을 통한 영상과 사운드의 상관관계

Abstract

영화에 있어서 음악은 영화의 줄거리를 전달하거나 시간적, 공간적 배경을 설명해 주거나, 스토리를 미리 암시해주는 등 영상 못지 않게 중요한 역할을 하면서 현대의 영화음악은 영상과 분리하여 생각할 수 없는 중요한 부분으로 인식되었다. 본 연구는 영화에 있어서 음악의 위치와 역할을 음악과 음향효과 면에서 다양한 형태의 분석자료가 포함되어 있는 스타워즈 에피소드I의 음악을 통해서 알아보고자 하였다. 이 논문에서 말하는 음악분석의범위는 효과음향까지 포함된 범위를 말한다. 음악과 음향효과는 상호보완적인 관계로서 악기의 음색을 이용하여 음향효과적인 요소로 쓸 수 있으며 음향효과 또한 음악적인 기능을 수행하기도 한다. 오늘날은 기술의 발달로 다양한 소재의 영화제작이 가능해졌고 그에 따라 더욱 다양한 음악과 음향효과가 필요하게 되었다. 스타워즈를 작곡한 존 윌리암스와 감독 조지 루카스의 일생과 작품세계를 알아보고 그들의 공동작품인 스타워즈의 구성과 스토리 등을 분석해 보았다. 영화의 줄거리는 우주 공간 속에서의 우주전쟁을 나타내고 있으며 갖가지 캐릭터의 우주인들이 등장한다는 점에서 음향효과적인 면들의 연구가 용이하고, 우주공간에서의 장면들은 무한한 스타일의 음악적 상상력을 펼칠 수 있는 장이 되기 때문에 음악적인 면에서도 많은 연구 가치를 내포하고 있다. 또한 에피소드1의 악보는 기존의 존 윌리암스의 스타워즈 시리즈의 악보에 최신의 4곡을 더한 것으로서 그의 최신작을 연구하는 좋은 자료가 되었다. 영화에 있어서 음악은 대사나 음향효과로 영화의 줄거리를 전달하고 시간적, 공간적 배경을 설명하는 외에도 등장인물의 내면심리를 나타내 주거나 영상의 시간적 도약이나 생략을 자연스럽게 연결시켜주는 역할 등을 하고 있다. 이는 영화 자체만으로는 부족한 요소들을 영상에 더하여 줌으로써 영화의 가치를 더욱 높이는 작용을 한다. 또한 음향효과는 캐릭터 특유의 성격을 나타내는 역할을 하거나, 공간감과 현장감을 표현하는 역할을 한다. 따라서 영화음악의 제작에 있어서 음악과 음향효과의 기능에 대한 꾸준한 연구와 이해가 있어야 하며 영화음악에 대한 보다 심층적인 연구가 계속되어야 할 것이다. ;Music in a movie plays roles as important as the picture such as conveying the story of the movie, explaining the temporal and spatial background or implying the story. Thus today film music is regarded as an essential part of a movie inseparable from picture. The present study purposed to the position and roles of music in movies through the music of Star Wars Episode I that contains various forms of music and sound effects. The scope of musical analysis referred to in this study includes sound effects. Music and sound effects are in a mutually complementary relation with each other. The tone color of musical instruments may be employed as an element of sound effects and, on the contrary, sound effects may perform musical functions. Today's technological development makes it possible to produce films with various materials, which in turn requires more diverse types of music and sound effects. This study investigated the life and the works of John Williams who composed Star Wars and George Lucas who directed the movie, and analyzed the structure and story of Star Wars, which was their joint work. The story of the movie is about a war in the space with all kinds of alien characters. Thus the movie is suitable for research on sound effects. Furthermore, because scenes in the space provide grounds for musical imagination of unlimited styles, the film is valuable for research in the aspect of music. Moreover, the music of Episode I includes four additional new pieces to John Williams' existing Star War series, so it is an excellent material for research on his recent music. Not only conveying the story of the movie and explaining the temporal and spatial background of the movie through conversations and sound effects, music in a movie also expresses the inner mental state of characters and bridges time gaps between scenes for natural flow. By adding such elements to picture, music upgrades the value of the movie. What is more, sound effects describe character-specific personalities or heighten cubic effects or realism. Thus there should be deeper understanding of the functions of music and sound effects in creating film music as well as in-depth research on relevant subjects.
