Toni Morrison의 초기작품에 나타난 좌절된 흑인여성의 예술성 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 Toni Morrison의 The Bluest Eye(1970)와 Sula(1973)에 등장하는 흑인 여성들이 막혀 있는 사회구조와 공동체 내의 일상 속에서 예술성을 발휘하여 의미 있게 살아가고자 하나 결국에는 좌절되어 버리는 상황을 고찰해 보려 한다. Morrison은 백인과 남성에 의한 이중적인 차별을 받는 흑인 여성들의 파괴적인 상황을 극복하는 수단으로 여성들 간의 긴밀한 관계 맺기와 흑인 전통문화와의 연계를 강조한다. The Bluest Eye의 남부 공동체는 이러한 구전 전통 및 연대의식이 존재하는 곳으로, 이곳의 흑인 여성들은 창조성 및 생명력과 같은 예술가적 가능성을 보유하고 살아간다. 반면, 북부 Lorain 공동체는 백인 자본주의의 가치와 그들의 미적 가치를 내재화한 곳으로 흑인 여성들이 온전하게 살아가는 것을 어렵게 만드는 곳이다. 이 공동체 안에서 Claudia와 창녀들은 흑인 구전 문화와의 연결을 통해 삶의 일상을 예술로 만들어 가면서 살아가지만 이들 또한 북부 공동체의 파괴적인 영향에서 벗어날 수는 없다. The Bluest Eye의 북부 흑인 공동체는 백인 지배 가치에 의한 자기부정에 시달리고 있지만 Sula의 배경이 되는 Bottom은 남부적인 공동체 정신과 흑인 고유의 문화가 살아 있는 곳이다. 그렇지만 Bottom 또한 백인 사회의 영향으로부터 자유로울 수 없으며, 공동체 내의 흑인 여성들은 인종주의와 성차별주의에 의한 고통의 삶을 살아간다. 이러한 공동체 내에서 Sula는 그녀가 가진 호기심과 상상력을 신체를 통한 성적 탐색과 현실 비판적인 언어를 통해 그 통로를 찾아 보려 한다. 그러나 가부장적인 가치가 지배하고 있는 Bottom 내에서 Sula의 예술적 충동은 이해되지 못하며, 그녀는 공동체의 몰이해 속에서 외롭게 죽어갈 수밖에 없게 된다. Morrison은 위의 두 작품을 통해 이전의 흑인 여성 작가들의 작품 속에 등장하는 수동적이고 나약한 백인 여성과 같은 비현실적인 흑인 여성이 아니라, 예술성을 통해 능동적이면서 주체적으로 삶을 이끌어 나가는 흑인 여성을 그려내고자 했으며, 더 나아가 이러한 흑인 여성들의 삶이 끝내는 미국 사회 내의 차별 구조에 의해 좌절되고 마는 현실을 고발하고자 했다.;This thesis examines the unfulfilled artistic potentiality of black women in Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Sula. In these two novels, the black women exhibit their artistic ability and try to live meaningful lives in the American society. However, in the blocked society and community, their efforts are not successful. Morrison emphasizes close relationships among the black women and their connections with the black cultural tradition that might solve the problems of black women suffering from racial and sexual discrimination. Oral tradition and solidarity are alive in the Southern community of The Bluest Eye. In this community, black women hold and exhibit their artistic potentiality such as creativity and vitality. On the other hand, the Northern community of The Bluest Eye internalizes white capitalistic values that make it hard for the black women to "remain whole". In Lorain community of The Bluest Eye, Claudia and three whores make their everyday lives as works of art connected with black oral tradition but they are frustrated under the community's negative influence. While the Northern community of The Bluest Eye is troubled with self-contempt caused by white cultural values, Bottom of Sula is characterized by Southern black solidarity and its culture. However, Bottom cannot get out of the white society influence, so the black women of Bottom suffer from racial and sexual discrimination. Sula searches for the channels of her curiosity and imagination through sexual exploits and critical language in Bottom community. But Bottom is dominated by patriarchal values and not being able to appreciate the artistic impulse of Sula, it leaves her to die alone. In these two novels, Morrison presents the independent black women who live actively with their artistic ability and are distinguished from the feeble-minded white women. Morrison dissects the reality of the black women whose lives are frustrated by discriminations within the American society.
