솔 벨로우의 『라벨스타인』에 나타난 인간성 회복의 문제

Abstract

This thesis investigates Saul Bellow's critical view on humanity in American modern culture from the perspectives of Jewish American scholar, Abe Ravelstein and his effort to show how the identity of Jewish American in private and public sphere including the historical event, Holocaust is connected with the general pursuit of humanity. And this study attempts to examine how his religious faith delivered by Chick roles in the expansion of the value of human being Bellow has asserted. The identity as a Jewish American has been a vital question in speaking of Saul Bellow. Not only his racial and cultural background is complicated, but also he has strongly resisted not to be categorized by a artificial presumption. Therefore, his comments on the problems and the position of a Jewish American he treats in Ravelstein are very meaningful. The first chapter offers brief review of the history and the general standpoint on writer Bellow. Proceeding to the main subject, the second chapter examines Bellow's diagnosis of modern culture and his assertion for humanity. Ravelstein does not refrain any critique on the modern culture which demolishes humanity and makes people oblivious of their originality. As a teacher, he makes full efforts to lead his students to realize and see the truth overcoming prevalent nihilism and cultural relativism. Bellow reflects his critical view on materialistic and unrighteous culture of today through Ravelstein. The third chapter contemplates the problem of the identity of Jewish American. First Bellow argues about that the private relations and works are not only limited to the single person in their influence and how they affect in the wider domain discussed by Ravelstein against Chick. Then Bellow suggests the holocaust as a representative example about the danger of people's innocent ignorance on politics. Inspecting closely on the Holocaust and the acceptance of its memory, Ravelstein warns that lapse of memory is namely the extinction of their people. He searches for clues of destruction of humanity once happened and ways for its recovery. This effort exhibits the expansion of Bellow's opinion on the identity of Jewish American that has been expressed passively in his works. Last, this studies Bellow's faith on God that can be inferred from the different ideas two main characters take on religion which is one of the Jewish legacies. Chick, experiencing the critical moment of his own death, sets forth his faith on God and afterlife differing with the atheist, Ravelstein. Moreover, he finds out the model of complete love that Rosamund shows in her self-sacrificing acts. Such Chick's realization reflects Bellow's own faith in God and afterlife and this claim represents his perspectives on the humanity, which is not accomplished in this world through a person's moral life, but is brought forth and is belong to God. This study attempts to investigate Bellow's critique on modern culture and advocacy of humanity shown in Ravelstein and consider the problems and positions that Jewish American identity contains in such circumstances and the historical event and their religious faith. And this examines that the establishment of the Jewish identity is the important foundation in the pursuit for humanity rather than it is in discord with universal humanity. ;본 논문은『라벨스타인』을 통해 벨로우의 인간성 회복에 대한 주창이 개인적인 영역과 유태인 대학살이라는 역사적 사건 및 현시대의 정치라는 공적 영역에서 유태인의 정체성 확립과 어떻게 연결되고 있으며, 유태인의 핵심적 유산인 종교적 믿음이 벨로우가 추구하는 인간 존재의 가치 확장에 궁극적으로 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 살펴보고자 하는데 그 목표가 있다. 유태계 미국인으로서의 정체성 문제는 여느 작가보다 벨로우에게 있어서 논의하기 어려운 문제로 다루어져 왔다. 그의 문화적, 인종적 배경이 복잡다단한 까닭도 있었지만 이에 덧붙여 자신의 정체성을 일반적인 통념에 의해 정의 내려지길 원하지 않았던 벨로우 개인의 저항이 오래도록 지속되어왔기 때문이다. 서장에서는 벨로우의 이러한 입장과 그가 유태인으로서의 문제를 이야기한다는 것의 의의를 간단히 살펴보기로 한다. 본론이 시작되는 2장에서는『라벨스타인』을 통해 이루어지는 벨로우의 현대 문명에 대한 비판과 인간성 회복에 대한 주장을 따라가 보기로 한다. 후반부를 제외한 소설의 주된 화자는 대개 라벨스타인으로서 그는 인간성을 파괴하고 본질을 망각하게 하는 현대 문명에 대한 강한 비판 의식을 가지고 접근하는 인물로서, 교사로서의 그의 직분을 수행하는 데 있어 무엇보다 오늘날 허무주의와 문화적 상대주의를 극복하고 진정한 실제를 바라보도록 하는데 초점을 두는 사람이다. 벨로우는 그가 지속적으로 주장해온 도덕적 인간상과 그러한 존재를 생존치 못하도록 하는 현대의 비인간적이고 물질적인 현대문명에 대한 비판을 라벨스타인을 통해 투영하고 있다 하겠다. 제 3장에서는 인간성이라는 대화두와 유태인의 정체성이 어떻게 맞물려 있는지 살펴보기로 하겠다. 먼저 라벨스타인이 칙에게 경종을 울리며 던지는 유태인의 정치적 정체성의 문제에 관해서 다루기로 하겠다. 벨로우는 라벨스타인이 던지는 유태인으로서의 질문들을 통해 개인적인 관계와 업무가 결코 공적인 것과 무관하지 않음을 칙의 가까운 인간관계를 통해 비판하고 그것이 유태인 대학살이라는 역사적 사건의 수용과 어떻게 맞닿아 있는지를 보여주는 과정을 짚어감으로써 망각이 곧 말살일 수 있는 유태인으로서의 정체성에 대해 경각심을 일으키고 있다. 벨로우는 라벨스타인과 칙 그리고 자기 자신의 공통 분모인 유태인성과 유태인으로서의 문제에 주목함으로써 나아가 인간성의 파멸의 원인과 회복의 답을 모색하고자 한다 하겠다. 그리고 이들을 통해 벨로우가 그간 소극적으로 발언해온 유태인의 정체성에 대한 견지가 어떻게 확장되고 있는지를 논의하고자 한다. 다음으로는 유태인의 핵심적 유산이라 할 종교에 대한 두 인물의 다른 견지를 살펴봄으로써 내세에 대한 믿음과 희생적 사랑의 모델로 정리되는 신에 대한 믿음에 관한 벨로우의 입장을 고찰해 보기로 한다. 칙은 스스로의 죽음의 위기를 경험하면서 신을 믿지 않았던 라벨스타인과 달리 신과 죽음, 그리고 내세에 대한 자신의 믿음을 피력하게 된다. 또한 불완전한 사랑의 구현을 영웅시했던 라벨스타인이 아닌 로자몬드를 통해 희생을 통한 완전한 사랑의 모델을 발견하고 있다. 이는 벨로우가 그가 가장 중요시하고 있는 인간의 존재 의미가 현세적인 도덕적 인간의 완성에 멈추는 것이 아닌 신에게 놓여있음을 칙의 입장을 통해 설명하고 있으며 그 끌어안음이 자신의 뿌리를 회복하는데서 온다는 것을 주장하고자 한다 하겠다. 이와 같은 일련의 고찰을 통해 본 논문은『라벨스타인』을 통해 드러나고 있는 벨로우의 현대 문명에 대한 비판적 진단과 인간성 회복에 대한 주장을 살펴보고, 유태계 미국인으로서의 정체성을 올바르게 정립하는 것이 이러한 문제와 상치되는 것이 아닌 중요한 초석이 되는 까닭과 의의를 짚어보기로 한다. 그리고 벨로우가 가지고 있는 종교적 전망이 지닌 유태적 뿌리와 그 의의에 대해 살펴보고 그의 도덕적 인간에 대한 견해가 궁극적으로 지향하고 있는 신에 대한 믿음에 대한 벨로우의 입장을 살펴보고자 한다.
