비지니스 영어 평가 개발에 관한 연구

Abstract

글로벌 비즈니스 시대에 인터넷을 통해 시시각각 세계 곳곳에서 들어오는 정보는 우리의 현재와 미래의 성공과 실패를 좌우하게 되었다. 국제무역, 금융, 교육 투자 등의 다양한 분야에서 정확한 정보를 빠르게 입수하고 효율적으로 활용하는 데 있어서 인터넷의 공용어인 영어는 그 중요성을 더해 가고 있다. 비즈니스의 무대가 세계화 되어 가면서 국제적인 비즈니스 의사소통능력은 조직과 국가 경쟁력을 강화시키고, 세계의 흐름에서 뒤쳐지지 않고 세계 경제에 동참하기 위한 중요한 요소가 되었다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 한국 비즈니스 현장에서는 비즈니스 영어 능력을 측정하기 위해 TOEIC이 가장 선호되고 있지만, 학습자들은 영어 시험에서 높은 점수를 기록하고서도 많은 경우 현장에서 직접 영어로 업무를 수행 하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이는 곧 TOEIC 시험이 한국 비즈니스 현장에서 필요한 영어 업무 능력을 제대로 평가하고 있지 못함을 의미한다. 그러므로 TOEIC 시험이 한국 비즈니스 현장에서의 필요한 영어 업무 능력을 어느 정도 평가하고 있는지 알아 볼 필요가 있다고 본다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 입시시 제출한 TOEIC 시험 성적과 실질적인 영어 업무 능력 평가간에 어떠한 관계가 있는지 알아보고 한국 실정에 맞는 비즈니스 영어 평가 개발 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 실제 비즈니스 현장에서 근무하고 있는 직원 66명, 상사 34명을 대상으로 입사시 TOEIC 성적과 영어 업무 능력에 대한 자가, 상사, 동료 평가간에 어떠한 상관관계가 있는지를 알아보았다. 그리고 비즈니스 현장에서 근무하고 있는 직원과 상사가 생각하는 비즈니스 영어 평가에 반영되어야 할 내용이 무엇인지 알아보았으며, 이를 TOEIC 시험 내용과 비교 분석함으로써, 한국 실정에 맞는 비즈니스 영어 평가 개발 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본 실험 연구를 통해 얻어진 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, TOEIC 점수와 영어 업무 능력에 대한 자가 평가, 상사 평가, 동료 평가간의 상관관계분석 결과와 회귀분석 결과에서, TOEIC의 듣기 점수와 TOEIC의 읽기 점수는 듣기 능력과 읽기 능력을 예측하는데도 한계가 있었다. 또한 말하기/듣기와 쓰기에 관한 영어 업무 능력에 대해서는 전혀 예측을 해 주지 못하였다. 둘째, 직원과 상사의 입장들을 대상으로 업무수행을 잘 할 수 있는 직원을 선발할 경우 평가해야 할 영어 업무를 분석해 본 결과, 직원이 응답한 항목은 말하기, 쓰기, 읽기, 듣기 순이었고, 상사가 응답한 항목은 쓰기, 말하기, 읽기, 듣기 순이었다. 셋째, 직원과 상사가 생각하는 비즈니스 영어 평가에 반영되어야 할 내용 중에서 중복되는 내용을 삭제하고 총 45개 항목과 TOEIC 기출 600문항을 비교 분석한 결과, 비즈니스 현장에서 종사하는 사람들의 비즈니스 영어 평가 개발시 반영되어야 할 내용과 실제 TOEIC시험 문항간에 차이가 있었다. 고객 상담, 업무상 전화 통화, 외국 바이어와의 미팅 등 27개 문항은 실제 TOEIC시험에 반영되어 있지만, 프리젠테이션 자료 작성, 보고서 작성 등 18개 문항은 반영되어 있지 않았다. 넷째, 비즈니스 영어 평가 개발시 반영되어야 할 내용을 직종별, 업무별, 언어기능별로 나누어 살펴보면, 업종과 업무에 따라 공통적으로 하는 업무들도 있지만, 주요 업무에 있어서는 차이가 있었다. 결론적으로 한국의 비즈니스 현장에서 비즈니스 영어 능력을 평가하기 위해 사용되는 TOEIC이 실무에서의 영어능력을 제대로 평가하지 못하고 있으며, 읽기, 듣기뿐 만 아니라 쓰기 및 말하기 영역에 대한 평가도구의 개발 및 보급이 강조되고 있다. 그리고 업종과 업무에 따라 하는 비즈니스 영어 업무가 다르므로, 업종과 업무에 따라서 평가 내용을 달리해야 한다고 본다. 따라서, 한국 비즈니스 상황에 맞는 업종별, 업무별로 다른 평가 내용을 선정하여, 네 가지 언어 기능을 모두 골고루 평가할 수 있는 비즈니스 영어 평가 도구가 개발되어야 한다고 본다. 이에 앞으로는 업종과 업무에 따라 비즈니스 영어 평가 모형을 제시하는 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다. ;As we head into an era of the global business, the information from all over the world became the key determining factor measuring success and failure of our present and future. English, which is globally used in the internet as a public language, has gotten important by accessing the information fast and accurately from the different fields such as international trade, finance, educational investment and using it effectively. As we extend our business to the abroad, the good communication ability of the international business reinforces the strength of nations and organizations. It has also been a critical factor to keep up the current trend in business and to cooperate with the world business. Under these circumstances, we prefer the TOEIC test to evaluate the business English proficiency in Korea, but we have had difficulties in performing our duties in English at work despite achieving a high score on the TOEIC test. This dictates that the TOEIC test does not evaluate the English proficiency well, which is needed in doing the business in the workplace. Therefore, it is necessary to consider that the TOEIC test predicts the English proficiency in the workplace to some extent. For this purpose, this paper will study the correlation between the TOEIC score and the proficiency of doing tasks in English and propose the better ways to evaluate the business English proficiency appropriately with respect to Korea business situation. The experimental participants are 64 employees and 34 senior workers. This study will show the correlation between the Listening and Reading Comprehension part scores of TOEIC(submitted when applying the company) and the proficiency of the working skills in an office, which are evaluated by one, their seniors and their peers. In addition, this paper will show which contents should be involved in business English testing. Analyzing the contents of the TOEIC test, we show the better ways to evaluate business English proficiency in accordance with the Korea business situation. The main results obtained from this study are as follows. First, according to the results of the correlation analysis and the regression analysis between the TOEIC scores and the evaluation scores of each group's English office work ability, the Listening Comprehension part score correlated low with the business English proficiency value in the task of listening. The TOEIC reading part score correlated low with the business English proficiency in the task related to reading. The Listening and Reading Comprehension part scores of TOEIC did not correlate with the business English proficiency in the task related to speaking and writing. Second, the analysis results of tasks having to be evaluated in business English testing were that the English tasks suggested by the employees were related to speaking, writing, reading, and listening in order. However, English tasks suggested by the employers were related to writing, speaking, reading and listening in order. Third, both the employees and the employers suggested that all 45 contents be reflected to the business evaluation. Comparing these contents and TOEIC's 600 questions, there were differences between the material which should have been reflected to the business English evaluation and the real TOEIC questions. Only 27 contents such as business talk, the conversation by phone, and meeting with the foreign buyers were reflected in the TOEIC test, but the other 18 contents such as writing reports and presentation were not. Finally, classifying the contents of the evaluation on business English according to its job, tasks, and language function. There were common tasks and different tasks. In conclusion, the TOEIC test, which has been used to evaluate the business English proficiency in the workplace, does not evaluate the business English proficiency, enough, which is required in the workplace. It is necessary to develop and supply the evaluation tools pertaining not only the reading and listening but also writing and speaking accordingly to the Korean business situation. We should choose the right evaluation contents with the different job and task, and develop the business English tools evaluating the overall four language functions because the different business tasks were required according to the job and task. Furthermore, the empirical research on business English evaluation is needed to suggest the appropriate evaluation model of the business English according to the job and task.
