Roger Quilter의 가곡에 대한 연구

Abstract

Roger Quilter (1877-1953) is well-known as a British composer of art songs of the 20th century. His works are performed as an important repertory of British songs, and are loved by a large audience. As far as his life is concerned, what is well-known superficially is that he lived an opulent and happy life. However, he labored under ill health all his life, and he suffered mental exhaustion because of wars. In addition, his homosexuality could not be accepted by even his family, and these internal, bitter experiences affected his music. In addition, he was a nervous, anxious man, but also he had a sense of humor and a love for human beings. These were expressed in his music, also. He was educated according to new trends of music in Germany; however, he kept a conservative attitude towards music composition, which remarkably was different from the musical current of that time. In brief, the distinctive features of his music are his unique melodic sense, and his taste in selecting poems and setting them to music was refined. Especially he had an excellent sense when selecting poems, by Herrick, Blake, Shelley and Tennyson, and especially those of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era. He loved setting their poems to music, and they have been rated highly as fine examples of the art song genre. An examination of his songs, shows that the method of setting a poem to music was to emphasize the rhythm and stress of the language. His songs consist of lyrical melodies with rich harmonies, which helped to popularize them. His songs are widely sung by not only professionals but also amateurs, because his songs make audiences feel easy, friendly and comfortable. This study is to explore Quilter through his songs. Especially it focuses on one of his great works, Seven Elizabethan Lyrics Op.12 which consists of seven songs; Weep You No More, My Life's Delight, Damask Roses, The Faithless Shepherdess, Brown is My Love, By a Fountainside, and Fair House of Joy. Through analyzing these songs, not only did the writer want to examine in detail the distinctive features expressed in them, but also to discover anew how Quilter composed with a subjective interpretation of their characteristics. The research findings are as follows: Quilter's songs are the outcome of his own originality and his romanticism. Firstly, his works are a perfect synthesis of poetry and music. Secondly, the vocal line and the accompaniment are of equal importance. Thirdly, he set a melody to music based on the rhythm and stress of language. Finally, his songs are full of rich harmonic color. We can say that all these things originated in Quilter's romantic compositional technique. In addition, the form and structure of the songs expressed on the surface appear rather simple and balanced romantic tendency, but on the contrary the internal structure of the songs are unbalanced and unsystematic, which should be regarded as Quilter's own compositional technique. Therefore, this study concludes that Quilter was a superb composer of songs who had his own creative style influenced by romanticism, but was not a simple romanticist. Although traditionally considered to be rather an anachronistic romanticist, he can be seen, on the contrary, as an individualist, a fine representative of 20th century English vocal music.;퀼터(Roger Quilter, 1877-1953)는 20세기 영국의 예술 가곡 작곡가이며 그의 작품은 영국 예술가곡의 주요 레파토리로 등장하며 청중들에게 애호되고 있다. 그의 생애를 살펴보면 표면적으로는 부유하고 순탄한 생애였다고 알려져 있으나 끊임없이 병을 앓았고 가족들의 이해를 얻지 못한 동성애적 성향, 전쟁으로 인한 정신적 피폐 등의 내면적 고통은 그의 음악에 영향을 끼쳤다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 그의 예민하며 소심한 성격과 그가 지닌 유우머와 따뜻한 인간애 역시 음악으로 표현되었다고 추정할 수 있다. 그는 독일에서 새로운 방향의 음악교육을 받았으나 그 당시의 음악의 흐름과는 달리 보수적 작곡 스타일을 견지한 점은 특이하다 할 수 있다. 그의 가곡의 전반적인 특징은 독특한 멜로디 감각과, 시의 선택과 곡을 붙임에 있어서의 세련된 취향으로 요약 될 수 있을 것이다. 특히 퀼터는 시의 선택에 탁월한 감각을 지녔으며 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare), 엘리자베스 왕조의 시기의 시인, 헤릭(Robert Herrick), 블레이크(William Blake) 쉘리(Percy Bysshe Shelley), 테니슨(Alfred Lord Tennyson)의 시를 선호하여 이 시들에 곡을 붙였고 훌륭한 가곡 작품으로 평가되고 있다. 또한 그의 가곡은 언어의 운율과 강세를 살리는 선율작곡 방식이 나타나며 서정적 선율에 풍부한 화성이 뒷받침되어 그 진가를 발휘한다. 또한 청중들이 쉽고 편안하게 다가갈 수 있는 친근함을 지니고 있어 전문가를 비롯한 아마츄어에게도 애호되는 음악임을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 본 논문은 퀼터의 가곡 세계를 연구한 것으로 그의 훌륭한 모음곡 작품 중 하나인 Seven Elizabethan Lyrics op.12의 7개의 가곡-'Weep you no more', 'My life's delight', 'Damask roses', 'The faithless shepherdess', 'Brown is my Love', 'By a fountainside', 'Fair house of joy'-을 분석하여 그의 가곡의 특징을 살펴보았다. 또한 분석에 대한 주관적 해석을 통해 퀼터의 가곡의 특징을 새롭게 조명해 보려는 시도를 해보았다. 이러한 연구를 통해 그의 가곡 작곡 방식에서 낭만주의적 경향과 퀼터만의 고유한 독자성을 발견할 수 있었다. 시와 음악과의 훌륭한 융합, 가창부와 반주부를 동등하게 다룬 점, 언어의 운율과 강세를 고려한 선율 작곡, 풍부한 화성적 색채감 등은 낭만주의적 작곡 방식에서 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있다. 표면적으로 나타난 형식과 구조는 단순하고 균형적이어서 낭만주의적 경향을 띄는 반면에 그 내부 구조는 불균형적, 불규칙적임을 발견하였고 이것은 퀼터만이 지닌 독특한 고유의 작곡 방식으로 보았다. 따라서 퀼터의 작곡 스타일을 단순히 낭만주의로 분류하던 종래의 관점과는 달리 퀼터는 낭만성이 가미된 독자적 작곡 방식을 지닌 20세기 영국 가곡 작곡가로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
