Trade and investment relations between south Korea and Malaysia

Abstract

This study provides the latest development and changes of trade and investment relations between Malaysia and Korea. The critical point is to evaluate the roles of Malaysia's Look East Policy by focusing on how far it has affected the bilateral trade and investment relations between the two countries. Through analyzing the changes of bilateral trade and investment's statistical data, the Look East Policy has proved to be successful in enhancing the Korea-Malaysia's economic relation. The prospect of Korea-Malaysia trade and investment relations is very encouraging. What makes the prospect so promising, apart from investigating Malaysia's Look East Policy, are the mutually complementary structure, greater intra-industry trade and strong regional partnership between the two countries. However, there are numerous of challenges facing Korea and Malaysia. To deal with these challenges, alternative measures will be recommended for further enhancing the economic cooperation between Korea and Malaysia. Among others measures, Malaysia and South Korea should accelerate the liberalization of trade and investment, facilitating business activities, enhancing cooperation and improving service sector. I believe that these areas would further enhance the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries and provide more opportunities for Korea and Malaysia to reinforce their already close ties.;이 연구는 말레이시아와 한국 간의 무역과 투자 관계의 발전과 변화에 대한 최신 정보를 제공한다. 중요한 포인트는 두 나라의 상호 무역 투자 관계에 있어서 말레이시아의 '동방 정책(Look East Policy)'이 얼마나 영향을 미쳤는가에 대한 평가가 될 것이다. 양국 상호 무역 투자 관련 통계 자료의 변화를 분석해 본 결과, '동방 정책(Look East Policy)'은 양국의 경제적인 관계의 발전에 성공적인 역할을 한 것으로 판명되었다. 한국과 말레이시아의 무역 투자 관계의 전망은 매우 밝다. 말레이시아의 '동방 정책(Look East Policy)'에 대해 살펴 보지 않더라도, 그 전망을 밝게 해 주는 것은 양국의 상호보완적인 구조와 거대한 내부 산업, 그리고 강한 지역적인 협력관계이다. 한편, 한국과 말레이시아 양국이 해결해야 할 많은 과제가 남아 있다. 이런 과제를 해결하기 위해서는 한국과 말레이시아 양국간의 경제적인 협력을 더욱 증진시킬 수 있는 대안적인 수단이 필요하다. 여러 대안들 가운데서 양국이 가장 힘써야 하는 부분은 무역 투자의 자유화, 사업 활동 촉진, 협력 증진, 서비스 분야의 개선이다. 이런 분야에서의 노력이 양국간의 상호 관계를 더욱 강화시킬 것이며, 또한 양국의 우호 증진을 위한 훌륭한 계기가 될 것임이 자명하다.
