Abstract
This thesis examines the role of perceptual similarity in the vowel epenthesis in English-to-Korean loanword adaptation and proposes that the immediate trigger of the phenomenon is the correspondence constraints that require the adapted forms to be perceptually similar to the source forms. To support the crucial role of perceptual similarity in the English-to-Korean loanword adaptation, the present study employs perception tests and aims to provide experimental evidence. In the CCV perception test, the subjects listen to English CCV stimuli and are asked to choose the first vowel they hear. The results show that English CCV is readily perceived as CVCV and specifically judged to be perceptually more similar to Korean C[o]CV than to C[u]CV or to C[ju]CV. This implies that the epenthetic vowel in the process of English-to-Korean loanword adaptation is /o/ because an insertion of this vowel results in greater perceptual similarity between the source forms and adapted forms than an insertion of any other vowel. In the CVC perception test, the subjects listen to English CVC words with twenty different codas and are asked to judge whether a given English CVC word is perceptually similar to corresponding Korean CVC, CVC[o], or to CV. The results show that English CVC words that end with sonorants or unreleased voiceless obstruents are perceptually most similar to the corresponding Korean CVC words; English CVC words that end with fricatives, released obstruents, or voiced obstruents are perceptually most similar to the corresponding Korean CVC[o] words; no English CVC word is perceptually most similar to the corresponding Korean CV words. The results generally match the observed pattern of the vowel epenthesis in English-to-Korean loanwords and support the claim that perceptual similarity plays a crucial role in motivating and conditioning the vowel epenthesis in English-to-Korean loanwords. Based on these experimental results, the present study also provides a detailed Optimality Theoretic analysis of the phenomenon. By adopting the P-map hypothesis (Steriade 2001) and the output-output correspondence hypothesis (Benua 1997; Smith 2004, 2006; Kenstowicz 2005), the analysis successfully incorporates into the phonological grammar the role of perceptual similarity and the independent status of loanword adaptation from native phonology. To be more specific, by employing the P-map hypothesis, relevant correspondence constraints and their rankings can be projected and determined directly based on the perceptual similarity scales established in the perception tests. Then, by adopting the output-output correspondence hypothesis, the grammar can have a distinct set of correspondence constraints that is different from the existing set of constraints and devoted to loanword adaptation.
