Korean-English Media Translation

Abstract

본 논문은 2002년에서 2003년에 걸쳐 SBS를 통해 방영된 시트콤 「똑바로 살아라」의 91화와 120화를 TV 자막용으로 번역하였다. 최근 한류 영향으로 한영 영상 번역의 수요가 급증하고 있는데 반해, 한영 영상 번역에 대한 학문적인 연구는 뒷받침 되고 있지 못한 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문은 전반부에서 현재 영상 번역 시장의 규모와 실태를 조사하고, 영상 번역의 특징에 대해 논의하며, 자막의 특징과 주안점들을 자세히 살펴본다. 전반부에서 고찰한 자막 번역에 필요한 실질적인 규칙들을 실제 번역에 적용함으로써「똑바로 살아라」를 번역하였다. 특히, 수용자 중심의 번역과 같은 방법 등을 통해 시청자들이 자막을 일정한 속도로 편하게 읽을 수 있도록 번역하는 데 중점을 두었다. 나아가, 영상물을 번역하는 효율적인 방법들을 제시하고자 하였다.;This M.A. thesis translates the dialogue of two episodes #91 and #120 of a Korean sitcom Do the Right Thing, produced by Kim Byeong-uk and televised by the Korean TV station SBS from 2002 to 2003. While there has been increasing demand for Korean-English media translation, few practical studies have been done on this field. Thus, in the theoretical paper prefaced to the translation, the thesis looks at the current market, rapidly rising with the popularity of hallyu, and discusses the features of media translation, specifically the features and key elements of subtitling. By examining and applying the practical rules and features, the thesis subtitles Do the Right Thing, focusing on the main priorities of subtitling including comfortable reading speed and target-oriented translation. While doing so, it further attempts to come up with effective ways to translate media materials.
