뮤지컬「미스 사이공」분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

In spite of short history, musical is the multi art of the stage which grows rapidly. However, it is necessary to do many researches because of the insufficient data. Therefore, this thesis makes an analysis of not only the Miss Saigon's location from the musical company, which is called Big 4 but also 29 songs through Sung Through Style, which was produced by original London casting on 1994. Through the analysis of tonality, chord, rhythm, orchestration, tempo, time, and main melody, this thesis researched the tendency of the music, the use of musical elements through the whole works, the effect of musical elements, and interrelation of the content and music expression technique. The fact that 「Miss Saigon」is still on stage in the world for 18years proves that this is not a blockbuster musical which investigates a heavily capitalized musical. It gains people's sympathy through the realistic materials of Vietnam War, love and the maternal love between hero and heroine, and opportunism features of the engineer who lives during the war. In addition, both tremendous stage techniques which make an audience indulge into the work and the actual movements with Claude-Michel Schoenberg music overpower the audience. Through the analysis of 「Miss Saigon」, there are some various music styles. First of all, it is reprised when the people, specific situation, psychological depiction are expressed. These elements not only give the unity characteristic of the whole music but also function as a language which gives a full understanding of contents. Second, percussion instruments and three synthesizers make diverse music by changing various tone colors. Especially, Asian musical instrument expresses the Orient atmosphere and Vietnam. Third, most songs have a stepwise and simple melody, which make the lyrics stand out. In addition, both irregular beat which emphasizes on the breath and lyrics and irregular phrase make the contents clear. Fourth, the different melody which is played simultaneously expresses the oppositions of two people. This provides the agreement of the situation and music and culminates an atmosphere. It also makes easy to deliver the lyrics by preventing overlap. Fifth, there was an animation feeling through the use of jazz rhythm and rock beats. The music of Book Musical is used to express the maximum sentiment by making differences between music and the words. However, Sung-Through musical accomplishes a rise in sentiment continuously. As the result of decreased emotional ups and downs in music expression and in a play situation, enormous stage setting becomes a natural consequence. Therefore, a blockbuster musical, which is based on enormous capital, is a proper result. The musical is taking place as the popular mass culture in the world. Since the musical, which is combined the art of multi field, creates a new added value, it can develop infinitely. Accordingly, continuous researches and education for musicians are essential for development of musical music. In addition, through this thesis, I hope to go toward in researches and production of Korean creation musical music.;뮤지컬은 짧은 역사에도 불구하고 빠르게 성장하고 있는 여러 예술이 총 집합된 종합 무대 예술이다. 그러나 뮤지컬의 체계화된 자료가 미비한 현실적인 문제로 이에 대한 많은 연구가 절실히 필요한 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 세계 4대 뮤지컬이라 칭함을 받는 「미스 사이공」을 연구대상으로 하여 뮤지컬 사에서 「미스 사이공」이 갖는 위치를 알아보고 성 스루 스타일의 특징에 맞게 1994년 오리지널 런던 캐스팅으로 제작된 음반의 29곡을 기준으로 분석하였다. 뮤지컬 한편에 삽입된 전곡의 조성 및 화성 리듬, 악기, 템포, 박자와 주 멜로디 등을 분석함으로 전체적인 음악의 흐름을 연구하고 작품 전체에 있어서 음악적 요소들이 어떻게 쓰였고 작품 전체에 미치는 영향과 내용과 음악적 표현기법의 상관관계를 중점적으로 연구하고자 하였다. 「미스 사이공」이 제작 된지 18년이 지난 지금도 세계 곳곳에서 공연되고 있는 사실은 이 작품이 단지 많은 자본을 투자하여 만든 블록버스터 뮤지컬이기 때문만이 아니라는 것을 알려준다. 베트남 전쟁이라는 사실적 소재에 남녀 주인공의 안타까운 사랑과 모성애, 그리고 전쟁 속에서 살아가는 엔지니어의 기회주의적인 모습은 관객으로 하여금 공감을 하게 한다. 여기에 작품에 빠져들게끔 하는 엄청난 무대기술과 사실적인 배우들의 움직임은 클로드 미쉘 쇤베르크의 음악과 함께 관객을 압도한다. 「미스 사이공」의 음악 분석을 통해 알아본 뮤지컬 음악 스타일은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인물이나 특정상황, 심리묘사를 표현한 특정 선율은 리프라이즈 되거나 부분 변형되어 쓰였는데 이런 요소는 전체적인 음악의 통일성을 주면서 음악이 언어의 기능을 하여 관객으로 하여금 극의 내용을 더욱 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 한다. 둘째, 여러 타악기와 는 물론 3대의 신시사이저가 계속적으로 다양한 음색으로 바꾸어 변화무쌍한 음악을 만들었고 특히 베트남을 표현한 아시안 악기는 동양적 분위기를 자아내었다. 셋째, 대부분의 곡은 중심 음이 순차 상행하거나 하행하는 복잡하지 않은 선율을 가지고 있는데 이런 음형은 상대적으로 가사를 돋보이게 하고 가사의 호흡과 강조에 의한 변박과 불규칙한 프레이즈는 내용이 분명하게 전달되게 한다. 넷째, 동시에 다른 선율이 노래되어 극중 두 사람의 대립을 표현하는 방법이 사용되었는데 상황과 음악의 일치성을 보여주며 분위기를 고조시켰다. 또한 동시에 부르면서도 가사가 겹치지 않게 배열하여 가사전달에 어려움이 없게 하였다. 다섯째, 장면에 어울리는 재즈리듬과 록비트의 사용으로 생동감 있게 극의 분위기를 이끌어갔다. 북 뮤지컬에서 음악은 대사 부분과 차이를 두어 감정의 극대화를 표현하는데 사용된다. 그러나 이런 성 스루 뮤지컬에서는 계속적으로 음악이 나오기 때문에 지속적인 감정의 고조를 이룬다. 이는 극중 상황과 음악적 표현에서 상대적으로 감정 기복의 차이가 줄어들게 되는 결과를 낳게 되는 문제가 생기게 되고 이런 문제를 해결하기 위한 거대한 무대장치와 효과는 필요충분적인 대안이었다. 그래서 세계 4대 뮤지컬로 대표되는 거대 자본의 블록버스터 형태의 뮤지컬은 당연한 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 현대 사회에서 뮤지컬은 친밀한 대중문화로 자리 잡아가고 있다. 여러 분야의 예술이 결합된 뮤지컬은 새로운 부가가치를 창출해 내어 무한하게 발전 가능하다. 따라서 뮤지컬 음악의 발전을 위해서는 지속적인 연구와 함께 뛰어난 뮤지컬 음악가의 육성에도 관심을 기울여야 할 것이다. 그리고 이러한 연구를 통해 한국 창작 뮤지컬 음악 연구와 제작에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.
