Abstract
A performance style in which a script, songs, and dances are infused into is called a musical, which places huge importance on popularity. That definition was heavily influenced by a musical form called a book musical, which made its full-scale appearance in Broadway in the 1940s. Given that modern musicals follow the traditions of the book musical style, it's necessary to identify tasks to promote its growth. Especially, music directly reflects the atmosphere of a scene and the personality and conflicts of the characters, playing a very important role in telling the story, which calls for ongoing research efforts into the music of musicals. This study set out to investigate the characteristics of Kiss Me, Kate(1948) as a book musical by analyzing its musical characteristics and to help establish the right understanding and perception of a musical. The study was subject to some limitations in that it didn't aim to review the general characteristics of a book musical and include its disadvantages in the research scope. As for methodology, an examination was conducted of the history of the Broadway musicals and book musicals along with the background of Kiss Me, Kate, whose status in the musical history was also investigated. The life and work tendencies of its composer and lyricist Cole Porter(1891-1964) were taken into consideration to understand his own musical styles. Its music was analyzed to figure out what kind of roles those characteristic elements played in developing the drama and creating an atmosphere and to find their common grounds with the elements of a book musical. The musical excellence of the book musical was recognized in 1949 when it won a Tony Award first in the musical category. Its analysis claims significance in that there was some light shed onto the early forms of modern musicals by looking into a classical book musical. Based on a Shakespearean play, Kiss Me, Kate tells a love story between man and woman in the format of drama in drama and the solid composition and displays the characteristics of a script-based book musical. The songs deliver the atmosphere of a scene effectively through such musical expressions as changing tonalities and borrowed chords. The similar patterns between the intonations and pitches work to highlight the words, while matching rhymes and repeating lyrics emphasize the expression and delivery of the words. The dances serve as the element to develop a plot. In an organic combination of the script, songs, and dances, it demonstrates a musical in a perfect format. The rhythm patterns of beguine, fox trot, and vamp employed by Porter play the pivotal role in unifying the overall atmosphere of the musical which is pleasant, humorous, and happy by means of repeating compositions. The results confirmed that Kiss Me, Kate became a classic book musical striking beautiful harmony among the composer's personality, tight structure, songs with persuasive lyrics, and dances. The study will hopefully contribute to the right understanding and accurate perception of the fundamental elements of a musical and the roles of music. The investigator also expects to see more great musicals in future.;대중성을 중요시한 예술로써 극본, 노래, 춤이 융합된 공연 양식을 뮤지컬이라 한다.
