안석주(安碩柱) 신문소설 삽화 연구

Abstract

한국근대는 인쇄물인 신문, 잡지 등 다양한 매체가 등장하였고, 각각의 매체에 따른 이미지들의 연구는 한국근대 회화의 이해를 더욱 폭넓게 하는 작업일 뿐 아니라, 이 시기 전반적인 문화의 경향을 살펴보는데 중요한 의미가 있다. 특히 신문의 경우 매일매일 만들어져 대중에게 제공되는 것으로, 대중과 가장 가까운 매스미디어로 대중들에게 끼치는 영향은 가히 직접적이라고 할 수 있겠다. 따라서 신문에 등장하는 이미지를 통해 한국근대를 재조명해 볼 수 있지 않을까 하는 생각에 주목하게 되었다. 특히 한국 신문소설의 삽화를 연구대상으로 선택한 이유는 이 시기 유행하던 소설과 함께 삽화를 그린 작가의 이름이 직접적으로 표현되어 있어 그 시대의 이미지 연구의 사료로써 적합하기 때문이다. 특히 근대는 일제하에 놓여있던 정치상황으로 인해 문화통치 등 다양한 요소들이 회황 영향을 끼친 것을 알 수 있다. 이것은 문화 전반에 해당되는 것으로 근대의 회화를 이해하기 위해서는 그 시대의 사상과 문학 등에 나타난 지식인들의 생각을 살펴보는 것이 중요하다. 왜냐하면 이 시기는 그림과 글 모두를 다루던 지식인들이 많이 등장하여, 그들의 사상과 그림을 함께 살펴보아 그 둘의 영향관계를 파악해 보는 것은 의미가 있다. 이처럼 그림과 글을 모두 다루던 지식인으로 대표되는 사람이 바로 안석주이다. 다른 삽화가들 중에서 안석주의 삽화를 논문주제로 삼은 것은 안석주는 1920년대부터 신문에 많은 삽화를 남기고 있고, 신문소설의 장르 속에서 다양하고 창의적인 독특한 그 만의 시도를 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 그는 1920년대부터 1940년대까지 삽화계에서 활동한 작가이지만, 연구시기를 1920년대로 설정한 것은 새로운 시도를 활발하게 했던 시기이고, 30년대에는 20년대를 토대로 정착한 단계이기 때문이다. 이러한 이유로 이 논문에서 신문소설 삽화 형성기인 1920년대의 안석주의 삽화활동에 대해 살펴보았다. 우선 안석주의 생애와 예술관을 살펴보았다. 1920년경부터는 아나키즘, 마르크스주의가 지식인들 사이에 파급되었고 미술계에서도 이와 같은 배경 속에서 다다, 미래주의, 러시아 구성주의, 독일 표현주의와 같은 양식들이 새로운 시대를 시사하는 미술로 받아들여졌다. 이 시기의 전위 작가들은 정치적으로도 전위적 사고방식을 가지고 미술과 사회의 혁명을 동시에 추구하였고, 대부분 프롤레타리아 미술운동에 가담하고 있었다. 따라서 안석주의 경우도 마찬가지로 이런 양식들이 삽화에 등장하고 있다. 그리고 그는 생활과 접목한 미술을 하고자 하여, 그 시기 생활에 대한 관심이 많았고, 이로 인해 일본에서 새로 생긴 문화 등에 관심을 갖고 있었다. 이러한 관심을 통해 새로운 패션과 유행을 받아들이고 신문소설 삽화에 반영하기도 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 연극, 영화, 패션 등 다양한 관심을 통해 여러 장르들이 신문소설 삽화에 차용되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 신문소설 삽화의 특징은 신문소설이 갖는 특징을 통하여 반복적으로 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 삽화의 구성은 처음 시작부분에 삽화가 등장하고, 제목, 삽화가, 소설가의 이름이 기록된다. 그리고 각 회의 신문소설에 한 컷의 삽화가 등장한다. 그리고 신문소설이 연재되기 전 소설예고를 통해 독자에게 앞으로 실리게 될 신문소설에 대한 지식과 작가, 삽화가들에 대한 이야기를 전달하고 있다. 신문소설의 대표적 유형으로 통속·연애소설, 탐정소설, 영화소설을 살펴보았다. 통속·연애소설에서는 주로 남녀 간의 사랑의 감정을 드러내고 있는 모습으로 함께 손을 잡고 있는 모습과, 야외에서의 모습 등 소설의 내용과 맞게 잘 표현되고 있다. 탐정소설의 경우 독자에게 추리를 하도록 클로즈업 기법과 절단된 신체를 이용하는 기법을 많이 사용하고 있다. 영화소설의 경우 처음부터 영화를 위해 만들어진 소설로 영화와 관련된 기법들이 등장하고 있다. 신문소설의 표현양식은 관전양식과 신흥양식, 만화양식으로 나누고 있다. 관전양식은 화단에서 나타나고 있는 인물화, 누드화, 실내좌상, 여성독서도 등이 많다. 신흥양식은 다양한 서양화풍을 소개하고 있는데, 신인상주의, 입체파, 야수파, 초현실주의, 러시아 구성주의 등 다양하게 나타난다. 만화양식에는 관전양식과 신흥양식에 포함되지 않는 삽화에서 나타난 새로운 양식을 말한다. 새로운 기법인 캐리처켜가 대표적이다. 위의 분석을 통해 안석주 삽화 이미지가 가지는 의의를 살펴보면, 신흥양식의 선구자로, 모던 패션의 확산, 다양한 장르의 혼용을 들 수 있다. 신흥양식의 경우 다양한 신인상주의, 입체파, 야수파, 러시아 구성주의 초현실주의 등 다양하게 나타난다. 의복,시계, 반지, 안경, 양산 등을 통해 다양한 인물들의 모습을 묘사하여 모던패션을 보여주어 확산되는데 영향을 끼쳤다. 또한 안석주의 경우 다른 작가들과 달리 연극배우, 무대장치 미술가, 서양화가, 미술평론가, 만문만화·만화, 신문소설 삽화 및 시·소설·희곡·시나리오 작가, 영화감독 등 다양한 장르의 예술활동을 하고 있다. 이로 인해 이러한 다양한 경험들이 신문소설 삽화에 적용되고 있다. 앞에서도 살펴보았듯이, 삽화의 첫 장면에 많이 등장하는 단독인물화는 소설과 연극의 극본에서 등장인물을 소개하는 것과 비슷한 역할을 하고 있다. 이 뿐 아니라 다른 장르인 회화, 문학, 사진, 포스터, 광고 등에서 영향을 받음으로 인하여 삽화 양식이 풍부해지고 있음을 알 수 있다.;In modern Korean time, various media of printing materials such as newspaper, magazine, and etc have appeared and researches on images according to each medium are works to broaden the understanding about modern Korean paintings and it is meaningful to review overall trend of cultures in this period. In particular, in case of newspaper, as it is provided to the public as it is made day by day, it is the closest mass media to the public and impacts on the public are really direct. Therefore, I became to pay attention that I can re-illustrate modern Korea through images appearing on newspaper. In particular, reasons for selecting illustrations of Korea newspaper novel as the target of research are because it is appropriate as historical data of researches on images of that period as novel as well as author's name who drew illustration are directly expressed. In particular, it is noticed that various elements such as cultural control had influenced paintings as it was under political situation of being controlled by Japan. It is important to examine the thoughts of intellectuals depicted in the thoughts and literatures for understanding modern paintings as this is covering overall cultures. Because it is meaningful to find out the impact relationship between the thoughts and pictures of many intellectuals as in this period, many intellectuals who handled both pictures and literatures had appeared. As a representative author handling both pictures and literatures, it was Ahn, Seok-Ju. Among other illustrators, reason that illustration of Ahn, Seok-Ju becomes the target of subject of theses is because Ahn, Seok-Ju had left many illustrations on newspapers from 1920s and in a genre of newspaper novels, he had shown his own uniqueness in various and creative attempts. He was an author who worked in the illustration world from 1920s to 1940s but the period of research was set at 1920s because it was during this period that he had tried many new attempts and his works of 1930s were settled based on 1920s. Under this reason, in this thesis, I have reviewed illustration activities of Ahn, Seok-Ju during 1920s when it was the period of formation of newspaper novel illustration. First, I have reviewed life and artistic viewpoint of Ahn, Seok-Ju. From 1920s, anarchism and marxism were spread among intellectuals and under this situation, in the world of art, types such as dada, futurism, Russian constructivism, and German expressionism were accepted as an art implying new period. Avant-garde authors of this period had avant-garde thoughts politically too and had pursued revolutions of art and society and most of them participated in proletarian art movement. Therefore, in case of Ahn, Seok-Ju, these types are appearing in the illustrations. And as he tried to work on arts grafted on life, he had lots of attention for the life of that period and because of this, he was interested in cultures created new in Japan. Through this interest, he accepted new fashion and fads and had reflected on newspaper novel illustrations. In addition, it was noticed that various genres were adopted on newspaper novel illustrations through his interests in various fields such as movie, fashion, and etc, In addition, it was noticed that the characteristics of newspaper novel illustration were appeared repetitively through the characteristics maintained by newspaper novels. Composition of illustration is composed in a manner that at the beginning part, illustration appears and subsequently title, and names of illustrator and novelist are recorded. And in each episode of newspaper novel, one cut of illustration appears. And through advance notice of novels to readers before the start of newspaper novels, they deliver knowledge and stories about author and illustrator of newspaper novel to be written in the future. As typical types of newspaper novels, common · love novel, detective novel, and movie novels were reviewed. In common · love novel, mainly as features of love between male and female, the features of holding hands together and outdoor features were well expressed in matching the contents of novels. In case of detective novels, close-up technique and technique using cut human body were used a lot for readers to infer. In case of movie novels, they were novels made for movies from starts and movies related techniques were appearing. Expression types of newspaper novels are divided into viewing type, new rising type, and comic type. Viewing types are many in portraits, nudes, indoor sitting features, and female magazines depicted in the world of paintings. New rising types are introducing various western painting styles and there appear in various styles such as new impressionism, cubism, fauvism, surrealism, Russian constructivism, and etc. Comic types mean new types appearing in illustration that are not included in viewing types and new rising types. As a new technique, caricature is typical. Through the above analysis, reviewing the meaning that Ahn, Seok-Ju illustration image has, he is a leader of a new rising type and his proliferation of modern fashion and mixture of various genres can be pointed out. In case of new rising types, various new impressionism, cubism, fauvism, Russian constructivism, and surrealism are appearing. Through clothes, watch, finger ring, eyeglass, and umbrella, various features of people were described to show modern fashion and influenced on the proliferation of that fashion. Also, in case of Ahn, Seok-Ju, unlike other authors, he worked in various genres of arts activities such as play actors, stage decoration artist, western painter, art critics, stray notes cartoon ·cartoon, newspaper novel illustration and poem, novel. drama, scenario author, movie director, and etc. These various experiences from these are applied to his newspaper novel illustrations. As reviewed in the previous, a single person picture appearing at the first scene of illustration plays a similar role as the introduction of people appearing in novels and playbooks. Besides, it was noticed that his illustration types were becoming affluent by receiving influences from other genres such as painting, literature, photography, poster, advertisement, and etc.
