음악의 기능적 측면을 중심으로 본 한국영화음악의 기능

Abstract

멀티 미디어 시대인 21세기에 접어들면서 영화는 '종합예술'로서의 면모를 갖추며 '멀티 미디어의 꽃'으로 불리고 있다. 또한 많은 예술 가운데 영화처럼 짧은 시간에 빠르게 발전한 예술도 드물다. 현대의 영화는 과거의 영화들보다 더욱 음악과 절대적 관계를 맺고 있으며 영화음악은 영화에 있어서 필수적 조건이 되었다. 본 연구는 영화에 있어서 음악의 위치와 역할을 시나리오 구성 전개와 음악과의 상관관계 등의 분석을 통해서 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 시대적 흐름에 따른 한국 영화 변천사와 한국 영화음악의 변천사를 살펴봄으로써 영화음악의 현 위치와 앞으로의 발전방향을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 연구방법에 있어서는 해외 영화제의 출품으로 한국영화에 대한 외국의 인식과 평가도 점점 높아져 세계 무대의 지평에 떠오르기 시작한 최근 10여 년 동안을 중심으로 매년 영화 진흥 위원회에서 선정한 흥행 Best 10 중 장르별로 골고루 영화를 선정한 뒤 음악상 수상 경력이 있는 작품이나 음악적 특이 사항이 있는 작품들을 추가로 선정해 이 작품들을 중심으로 주제곡과 배경음악 등의 음악적 장르와 음악의 기능 등을 분석하고 통계를 내 보고자 하였다. 영화에 있어서 영화음악은 대사나 음향효과 같이 영화의 줄거리를 전달하는 기능 외에 시간적, 공간적 배경을 설명해 주거나 등장인물의 내면 심리를 나타내 주거나 영상의 시간적 도약이나 생략을 자연스럽게 연결시켜주는 연결고리 역할 등을 하고 있다. 영화 장르별 음악의 경향과 비중을 살펴보면 액션은 분위기나 결투 장면의 묘사를 위한 기능으로써 음악이 주로 사용되고 있으며 전쟁은 전투 장면 등에서 전투의 상황설명을 위한 기능으로써의 음악이 주로 사용되고 전투가 지속되면서 발생되는 갈등이나 불안감 등을 표현하기 위해서 심리묘사 기능으로써의 음악이 사용되고 있다. 코믹은 대부분의 음악이 상황설명을 위한 기능으로 사용되고 있으나 멜로적인 성향을 지닌 코믹류에서는 심리적 기능으로써의 사용 역시 두드러진다. 공포는 음향 효과적인 요소로써의 음악적 기능이 주를 이루지만 수사, 살인 등을 다룬 작품에서는 심리적 기능도 중요한 역할을 한다. 멜로는 다른 장르와 마찬가지로 분위기 묘사나 상황설명 등의 기능이 우위에 있는 경우가 많고 주로 남녀간의 갈등을 나타내기 위해 심리적 기능의 음악을 사용하고 있다. 사극 역시 음악사용에 있어서 멜로와 비슷한 경향을 띠고 있었다. 또 한국 영화음악의 특징으로는 기존의 팝송이나 가요가 주제곡으로 삽입되는 경향이 많았고, 최근에 와서는 영화음악의 경향이 더욱 다양화되었는데 모더니즘의 경향, 재즈 음악의 경향, 국악 사용의 경향이 두드러진다. 본 연구를 하면서 영화음악은 영화의 분위기를 고조시키고 극적 상황의 느낌을 보충하거나 고조시키며, 나아가 보는 사람으로 하여금 더욱 영화에 몰입시켜 감정이입을 시키는 역할을 한다는 것을 알았다. 따라서 영화음악의 제작에 있어 영화음악에 대한 깊은 연구와 이해가 따라야 한다는 것을 인식하고 영화음악에 대한 더 깊은 연구와 노력이 필요할 것이다.;In the multi-media era of the 21st century, movies have become a 'comprehensive art form'. Furthermore, as a rapidly growing art form, movies have established themselves as the "essence of multi media." Compared with earlier films, today's movies have a much more concrete relationship with music and have become a vital part of contemporary films. This study will observe the current relationship between film and music by analyzing Korean films produced after 1990. Such analysis includes ⅰ) musical trend during the period, ⅱ) relationship between the story of the movie and opening music, ⅲ) characteristics of opening and closing music, and ⅳ) the role of particular types of music in different genres. In addition, this study will examine the historical tendencies of Korean movies and its future relationship with music. This process will be done by examining the historical transition of Korean movies chronologically, changes in the relationship between movies and music, changes in the number of movies based on contemporary issues, and the changes in the number of movies produced according to genre. Based upon the above theories, we will statistically analyze data in regards to the functionality of theme music and background music as it is used in movies. The movies which were chosen as our samples stem from a variety of different backgrounds such as the movie's box-office record, theatrical category, soundtrack uniqueness, and awards granted for musical achievement. Soundtracks have often been used as a vehicle to help enhance a movie's story line as well as convey notions of space and time. Furthermore, soundtracks help to set a unique disposition for characters. Analysis of soundtracks used in various movie categories; "Action" movies utilized music predominantly as a means of physical canvassing during battle or war scenes. During battle scenes, the music is used as a method to express psychological turmoil in characters. "Comedy" movies also utilized music to show physicality. However, there is a distinct melodramatic cloud which intermingles with the psychological aspect of comedy. "Horror" movies utilized audio effects as well as music to instill in the viewer a sense of physical suspense. However, "investigation" and "murder" movies utilized audio effects and music for the dual purpose of characterizing physical as well as psychological aspects of a movie. "Drama" movies utilized music in much the same way as the above categories. However, the primary function was to help express the emotions which arise in the relationships between men and women. "Historical drama" utilized music in the same way as dramas. However, they do not emphasize the female, male relationship. Before 1990, the tendency of music used in Korean movies were predominantly Korean contemporary songs and well-known foreign music. After the 1990's, there has been a trend emphasizing a more eclectic utilization of music. In conclusion, music helps to elevate the viewer's perceptual and emotional interpretation of a movie. In addition, music helps to anesthetize a viewer to become completely engrossed in a film. Therefore, movie producers must give special attention to the complex relationship between a movie and music.
