기호론 관점적 Folon 작품분석

Abstract

Since Folon’s theory has not been sufficiently studied in Korea, those who wish to conduct a survey on his theory may feel lack of research materials. Accordingly, this study is intended to examine that Folon’s work is pictorial in its theme and expressive technique, but has some elements of illustration in terms of its objective and character. This study aims to analyze the features of Folon’s work, depending on semiotic methodology, thereby presenting the status and difference of his art world as a popular art. The analytical framework used for such analysis is logical semiotics, instead of any empirical, intuitional method. In producing and analyzing visual images, semiotics provides the logical framework of multilateral implications and multidimensional significations. This study accepts Peirce’s semiotic analysis as a frame for analyzing Folon’s images. The procedure and aim of this study is the followings: Folon’s life and background of his work are reviewed in the Chapter 2. The theoretical background of semiotics that is the framework of analyzing Folon’s images is examined in the chapter 3. The analytical framework derived from Peirce’s trilogic method is expounded by suggesting general and specific cases of his work. The validity of such framework is proved in this chapter. The standards of classification such as icons, indicators, and symbols are applied and corresponded to Folon’s work. As its result, it can be known that Folon’s main expressive methods incompass iconic metaphors and symbolic icons. The primary features of Folon’s work such as metaphoric, emblematic expressions and expressive factors are specifically re-analyzed in the chapter4. The distinctiveness and background of Folon’s art are investigated in association with the surrealist art tendency. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, Folon relies mainly on metaphorical, symbolic expressions blended with simplicity, extemporaneousness, and nonsensicality when expressing solitude, vanity, and indigence. Folon’s art, however, is characterized by his critical manifestations of uniform, mechanical social structures, announcing the metaphoric philosophy of his messages through its distinctiveness and differentiation. Second, Folon’s primary expressive methods using metaphors and symbols bring about surrealist distortions, provoking a visual tension. Despite its cartoon and kitschy like quality, Folon’s art appropriates some serious expressions. That is why his art remains friendly and allows for the general public to have easy access. That is one of the reasons his work is able to maintain its position as a mass art in his society. In this study, Folon is viewed as an artist who impressively featured the invisible world of things in a delicate manner, instead of depending on overstated themes, and produced his unique images throughout his life. These aspects of his art may have a positive influence on many young art students.;아직 국내에는 Folon의 연구나 그 쓰여 진 자료가 미비한 것이 현실이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 시대의 사상적 변화와 미술사조의 영향 등으로 Folon 작품만이 갖는 주제의식이나 표현 방법들이 회화적이면서도 일러스트레이션 고유의 목적이나 특징을 갖고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이에 이번 연구의 목적은 기호론적 방법론을 통해 Folon 작품의 특징들을 분석하고 그 결과로 나온 표상적인 표현 특징 안에 내포되어 있는 그의 예술 세계를 고찰해 봄으로써 그가 대중미술로써 갖는 위상 및 차별성을 제시하고자 하였다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 Folon작품 이미지 분석을 위해 기존의 경험적이고 직관적인 분석이 아닌 논리적인 기호학을 그 분석틀로 사용하였다. 이는 기호학이 시각적 이미지를 생산하거나 분석함에 있어서 시각언어가 일반 언어에 비해 갖고 있는 다의적인 의미성과 다차원 의미작용의 논리적 분석틀을 제공 하는 것이 가능함을 감안하여 도상 해석학의 실제적 응용에 대한 가능성을 발견 할 수 있는 퍼스의 기호학을 Folon 작품 이미지 분석틀로 삼아 연구 하였다. 이에 따른 본 연구 내용의 구체적 절차와 목표는 다음과 같다. 1장은 연구의 배경과 목적 및 방법에 대해 살펴보았다. 2장은 Folon의 생애와 작품의 시대적 배경 및 작품 활동을 고찰했다. 3장은 그의 작품 이미지 분석틀인 기호론의 이론적 배경을 살펴보고 본 연구의 작품 분석틀로 사용한 퍼스의 삼분법에서 파생되어진 기호 대상 해석틀에 대해 일반적 사례와 Folon 작품 사례를 통해 구체화시킨 다음 이를 설명하고 그 분석틀의 타당성을 제시하였다. 그 결과로 이 분석틀에서 말하고 있는 분류기준인 도상, 지표, 상징에 Folon의 작품을 대응, 합치시켜 분석해 본 결과 은유적 도상의 표현 방법이 주를 이룬다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 4장은 앞서 내린 분석 결과표를 통해 Folon 작품의 특징인 은유적 표현 방법과 그 표현 요소의 특징을 구체적으로 재분석하고 Folon 작품이 갖는 예술 세계의 고유성과 그 형성 배경을 초현실주의적 미술사조와의 연관성을 통해 살펴보며 작품의 표현 특징을 제시 했다. 따라서 본 연구의 결론은 첫째, Folon은 작품 표현 요소들에 있어서는 단순성과 즉흥성, 엉뚱함 등을 은유적 표현방법으로 사용하고 있다. 그러나 그 배후엔 동시대인들의 획일적이고 메카니즘적인 사회 구조와 이에 대한 비판적이고 고발적인 문제 제기들을 예리하게 관찰하여 작품에 표현하고자 한 표현 특징과 메타포적 메시지 철학을 내포하고 있었으므로 이점에서 그가 갖는 예술 세계의 고유성과 차별성을 엿볼 수 있었다. 둘째, Folon 작품의 주된 표현 방법들인 은유성은 초현실주의가 갖는 표현 방법 중에 익숙한 상황을 뒤 짚는 왜곡된 표현이나 시각적 긴장감을 주는 표현 방법들을 사용하고 있다. 또한 만화나 키치 같으면서도 진지하기도 한 부분적 표현들을 차용하고 있기 때문에 무거운 주제들일지라도 대중들이 쉽고 친근하게 접근할 수 있었고 이는 곧 그가 대중 미술로써 한 사회에서 위상을 차지 할 수 있었던 부분이기도 하다. 본 연구를 통해 Folon 작가에 대한 견해를 제시해 본다면 Folon이란 작가는 그 대상이 갖고 있는 보이지 않는 세계를 과장된 주제의식이 아닌 세세한 감동으로 진솔 되게 표현해 내면서 어느 누구보다도 자신의 고유 이미지를 일생동안 창작한 작가였기 때문에 이 같은 점은 미래의 여러 예술학도들에게 긍정적으로 시사내지는 영향을 줄 수 있으리라고 본다.
