Cultural Understanding in Language Education

Abstract

Language and culture are closely related and interwoven, and cannot be considered as two different aspects. Language is a product or the result of a culture, and it is used as an instrument of communication. Having this view in mind, one can never fully understand nor learn a language without having a real knowledge of the culture in which the language is spoken. Hence, appropriate or true communication in English is only possible after learning about cultural differences, Especially, as Korean and English cultural features differ innumberable one can never deny the vital importance of contrastive analysis of Korean and English cultures. In this study, the writer has attempted to show some cultural aspects of the two cultures which are quite contrastive. The study is organized into four chapters, and each chapter is summarized briefly as follow: Chapter Ⅰintroduces the necessity and the significance of the study. Chapter Ⅱ discusses the objective of foreign language education, the definition of culture, method and limitation of the study, and the result of the questionaire. Chapter Ⅲ is the main chapter which deals with Korean and western cultural contrastive analysis. The analysis was based on some areas of cultural differences. (1) name; (2) title; (3) family; (4) age and sex; (5) concept of the 'Lady first', (6) table setting and table manners; (7) conversing manner; (8) general manner; (9) privacy; (10) greetings; (11) gestures; (12) writing an address, date, and numbers; (13) exchanging presets; (14) concept of time; (15) parties; (16) different usage of words; (17) school education. Finally, chapter Ⅳ as a conclusion emphasizes the urgency of learning cultural differences, and the necessary attitude of the teacher toward teaching these differences. The areas compared here are, however, only a small part of both cultures. They are mainly a contrastive analysis of life styles. This is the limitation of the study. The differences between the two cultures are so divers that even one area can be discussed in great detail. The writer recommends that those who are interested in this topic find other areas to compare, providing more information concerning the differences between the two cultures.

;언어와 문화는 서로 깊은 연관성을 가지고 있으며 하나의 조직체로서 짜여져 있기 때문에 그 둘은 서로 다른 양상으로 생각되어질 수 없다. 언어는 문화의 산물 또는 결과이며 그것은 의사 전달의 수단으로서 사용되고 있다. 이러한 관점을 기억할 때, 그 문화권내에서 사용되는 언어의 완전한 이해와 학습은 문화에 대한 진정한 지식이 없이는 절대로 일어날 수 없다. 특히 한국과 영어권 문화의 특징은 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼의 차이가 있기 때문에 한국과 영어권 문화의 비교 분석의 중요성을 부정할 수는 없다. 본 연구에서 저자는 두 문화권의 대조적인 면들을 보여주고자 노력했다. 본 연구는 네 개의 장으로 나뉘어져 있으며 각 장은 다음과 같이 간략하게 요약되어 질 수 있다. 제 일장에서는 본 연구의 필요성과 중요성을 소개했다. 제 이장에서는 외국어교육의 목표, 문화의 정의, 연구의 방법과 제한점, 그리고 설문지 조사의 결과를 논했다. 제 삼장은 본문이 되는 장으로서 한국과 영어권 문화의 비교 분석을 다루고 있다. 분석은 십칠개의 문화 영역의 차이점에 그 근거를 두었다. (1) 이름 (2)호칭 (3)가족 (4)나이와 성별 (5)‘여성우대’의 개념 (6)상차리기와 식사예절 (7)대화시의 태고 (8)일반예절 (9)privacy (10)인사 (11)몸짓 (12)주소, 날짜 그리고 번호의 기입 방법 (13)선물교환 (14) 시간의 개념 (15)잔치 (16)단어 사용의 차이 (17)학교교육 끝으로 제 사장은 결론으로서 문화 차이점 학습의 긴박함과 이러한 차이점을 가르치는 교사들의 태도등이 강조되었다. 이상의 영역들은 그러나 양 문화권의 한 부분에 지나지 않는다. 그 영역들은 일상생활 형태의 비교 분석에 더욱 가깝다. 이 점이 본 연구의 제한점이다. 두 문화는 너무도 차이점이 많으므로 단지 한 영역이 좀 더 자세하게 논해질 수 있을 것이다. 이 분야에 관심이 있는 사람들에게 저자는 위의 영역들 이외의 것을 비교해 보도록 권하고 싶다. 더욱 많은 차이점의 자료를 수집하고 상세한 예들을 제시하도록 권한다.
