Feature Stories related to Korean Musicals

Abstract

본 논문은 한국뮤지컬과 관련된 다양한 각도와 소재의 영문 특집기사 모음집을 제작하여 한국뮤지컬 장르에 대한 관심도를 높이고, 한국 공연예술을 다루는 영문특집기사 작성 방법론을 제시하고자 쓴 것이다. 필자가 실행한 온라인 인터넷 조사 결과에 따르면, 한국 뮤지컬의 국제적인 인지도는 한국 대중음악, 텔레비전 드라마, 영화 등과 같은 다른 대중문화에 비해 상대적으로 매우 낮다. 그러나 한국뮤지컬은 현재 크게 발전 중인데다 해외로 진출하기 시작하였으며, 새로운 소재라는 점에서 잠재적으로 영문 뉴스로서의 가치가 있다. 본 논문은 이렇듯 한국뮤지컬과 그와 관련된 소재를 다룬 영문 뉴스기사의 필요를 동기로 하고 있다. 본 논문의 전반부에는 특히 공연예술을 다루는 기사를 초점으로 특집기사 작성 원리에 대해서 논한다. 본 논문을 위해 선택된 특집기사의 종류로는 평론(review), 인물 특집기사(profile feature), 현장 배후 특집기사(behind-the-scenes feature), 목적지 특집기사(destination feature)이다. 각각의 특집기사 작성과 관련된 조사 및 양식상의 방법론을 더 구체적으로 논하면서 출판된 예시와 본 논문의 예시를 포함하기도 한다. 본 논문에 들어간 완성된 특집기사는 추후 같은 장르에 관한 기사 작성을 위해 참고할 수 있는 모델로서 제시하고 있다.;This thesis aims to promote interest in the field of Korean musicals through a series of feature stories in English, and to provide a set of writing principles related to writing feature stories covering the Korean performing arts. Online Internet research showed that Korean musicals are not as internationally recognized as other Korean pop culture genres such as Korean pop music, TV dramas, and films. However, Korean musicals are presently a developing field within Korea and starting to expand abroad. Because of their newness, they are a potentially newsworthy topic for writing about in English. This thesis was thus motivated by the lack of English news stories on Korean musicals and related subjects. This thesis is prefaced with a theoretical paper discussing the principles of feature story writing, specifically focusing on stories dealing with the performing arts. Feature stories selected for this thesis were the review, the profile feature, the behind-the-scenes feature, and the destination feature. The practical investigative and stylistic methodologies behind each of these types of feature stories are discussed in detail, with examples given from both published sources and from this thesis. The completed feature stories included in this thesis are presented as models for potential future coverage of this field.
