Abstract
This thesis is a study of Henry James's Vision of Life as seen in The Beast in the Jungle, a great example of the unlived life, and The Ambassadors, an excellent study of the fully lived life. As James's world is defined by his vision of life, and his art an expression of that vision, it is only logical that an understanding of his vision would be the essential key to his art. And as James's art opens the age of the modem novel, an understanding of his art leads to an understanding of the modem novel. The modem novel evolved when writers like Henry James started focusing on internal (psychological) action rather than external action, thereby enlarging the realm of experience dealt with in fiction and bringing the novel closer to the pulse of real life. James, who thought of the novel as "a personal, a direct impression of in his works to represent life realistically as he saw it. life", sought in his works to represent life realistically as he saw it. For to James, the morality of a work of art lay in "the amount of felt life concerned in producing it", in the artist's sensibility--that is, his expression of a total view of the world and life. As living meant seeing and feeling and thinking intensely and consciously to James, his novels show the workings of the human consciousness in the process of living. Through the medium of a center of consciousness James tried to track the spiritual and moral growth of his characters as they apprehended life. Thus, the Jamesian moral decision involves a choice between two ways of life, one striving for a greater awareness of life and fulfillment of human possibilities, and the other eventually ending in aridity and negation. Those of his characters who choose the former way, the fully lived life, achieve "the power to be finely aware and richly responsible" while preserving their integrity and finding the meaning of their existence through active--that is, conscious--participation in life. This involves a process of education, an awakening of sensibility and consciousness by way of intense impressions and various rich experiences, as can be seen through Lambert Strether's awakening to life in the Ambassadors. Those of his characters who choose the latter way, the unlived life, bring about their own negation by shrinking away from and giving up life, like John Marcher in The Beast in the Jungle. Not only do they prove to be self-destructive through the waste of their own lives, but in many cases due to their passivity and selfishness they also tend to block the spiritual growth of other people, thereby acting as a force of destructive "evil", as Marcher did in May Bertram's life. James regarded such characters as his greatest villains.;본 논문은 살지 못한 삶에 대한 경고인 The Beast in the Jungle과 풍부하게 산 삶의 가능성을 제시하는 The Ambassadors에 대한 고찰을 통하여 Henry James의 문학세계를 규정하는 그의 삶에 대한 Vision을 살펴보고자 한다. The Beast in the Jungle에서 John Marcher는 삶에 대한 방관과 회피로 자신의 삶을 낭비하고 황폐화시킨다 그 결과 자신의 존재의미조차 무화(無化)시켜 버리고 만다.
