Abstract

The purpose of this these is to study Maurice Durufle´'s (1902-1986) organ music through the structural analysis of his organ works. is organ works. He, a French composer-organist and educator, composed only 13 works and among them 5 works are organ works. They are condensed and implicit enough to display his musicality well. This thesis analized the work, Pre´lude, Adagio e t Choral varie´ Sur le the´me du "Veni Creator" Op.4. (1930), which takes on the characteristics of the symphonical style of late Romanticism, Impressionism and Neo-classicim. The work consists of three movements. It is, however, considered as one unit of work not only because it has the bridge of seven bars between the first and second movement but because it progresses with the pause between the second and third movement. The main motives of "Veni Creator", which are shown throughout the whole movement, are not simple 'quote', but the structural device which generates the whole piece. The key of the whole movements is in mixolydian. On the basis of this mode, the following characteristics combined with ambiguous and fantastic impressionism are remarkable: harmonic progression which consists of the 7th, 9th, 11th arid tertian chords and chromaticism, whole tone scale, and cross-rhythm. Moreover, the characteristics of Neo-classicism such as the homophonic style, the textual inversion, frequent sequence and the imitative progression can often be found in the basic structure of the polyphonic texture. Durufle´ was so meticulous and introspective that. this personality gave his work a perfect balance and harmony. Durufle´ was on a choir at a church when young and this experience and his religious belief added a beautiful nuance and a sublime emotion to his work. From the remark mentioned above, the author came to a conclusion that Durufle´ was a successful musician who established his unique style by combining his particularity with the traditional French style and the new musical wave.;본 논문은 Maurice Durufle´의 오르간 작품에 대한 구조적인 분석을 동하여 그의 오르간 작품을 이해하는데 궁극적인 목적을 두었다. 20세기의 프랑스 작곡가이며 오르가니스트이자 교육가로 알려진 Durufle´는 동 시대의 다른 작곡가들에 비해 상당히 적은, 총 Opus 13 에 달하는 작품을 남겼다. 그 중에서 다섯곡이 오르간 작품인데, 곡 하나하나가 모두 그의 사고와 의도를 분명히 나타내고 있을 정도로 요약적이며 함축적인 음악세계를 지니고 있다. 본 논문에서 분석한 작품은 Pre´lude, Adagio et Choral varie´ sur le the´me du "Veni Creator" Op. 4 (1930) 이며, 이 작품은 후기 낭만주의의 교향악적인 양식과 인상주의, 신고전주의적인 성격을 모두 갖고 있다. 이 작품은 3 악장으로 구성되어 있다. 그러나, 1 악장과 2 악장 사이에는 7 마디의 경과부가 있고, 2, 3 악장 사이에는 연속 진행이 요구되기 때문에 쉼 없이 진행되는 하나의 연결된 작품으로 이해되기도 한다. 주재료인 "Veni Creator" 선율은 악구나 동기별로 나누어 사용되지만 단순한 '차용'이 아니며, 이 동기가 확대·발전된 새로운 악구를 형성하며 전 악장에 걸쳐서 구조적으로 사용되었다. 모든 조성은 Mixolydian 이며 이 선법 위에서 7도, 9도, 11도 등의 화음 진행과 반음계주의, 온음계와 교차리듬 (Cross rhythm) 의 특징들이 불분명하고 모호한 신비성을 보이는 인상주의적 색채들과 잘 결합되어 나타났다. 또한 Polyphonic 구조의 기본 골격 위에 잦은 동형진행 (Sequence), 모방, 반복, 구조적인 전위 등의 신고전주의적 성격도 보여진다. 게다가 Durufle´ 자신의 내면적이고 세심한 성품이 작품 전체에서 완전한 균형과 조화를 이루어 그의 음악에 있어서 독자적인 특성으로 자리잡고 있다. 마지막으로는, 어린 시절 성가대를 통해 얻어진 경험들이 그의 종교적 신념과 잘 융화되어, 작품 속에서 아름다운 뉘앙스, 숭고한 감동들로 표현되었다. 위와 같은 관점에서 Durufle´의 음악적 특징을 종합해 본 결과, 그는 프랑스 오르간 음악의 전통과, 새로운 음악 양식의 조류, 개인의 독자적인 양식을 잘 조화롭게 통합하여 그의 음악 세계를 분명하게 표현하는데 성공한 음악가라 할 수 있다.
