1960년대 미국의 진즈 패션(Jeans Fashion)에 관한 연구

Abstract

The object of this story is to aim at the expression of jeans that appeared in american youth culture of the 1960's. At 1960's the society had the atmosphere, which was full with ability and accomplishment oriented consideration and materialism in the United States. Among young people there occurred the tendency of revolt in all sorts of literature, arts, etc,. With these circumstances those who was increased in quantity and grown as the critic group in terms of intellecture had created the unique culture against the old generation. They tool the leading role at those period. Jeans was created by Levi Strauss and considered as work clothes until 1940's. It was accepted as the general clothing for young people during the 1950's. Thereafter at 1960's it had been the representative clothing as the symbol of revolt and freedom. Until from the 1970's as young people accepting fashionable jeans, it became fashionable and various. Nowadays is getting diverse according to personality. From 1950's through 1960's Jeans, which set to the representative clothing, had the close relationship with youth culture. Young people at those period defied against the established society, which was full with extravagancy, wealth, and materialism, and took opposition to the existing artificial and hypocritic systems. Therefore they created own unique culture and take into action as the expression of resistance. The teenagers' revolt movement assumed aspects of both resisting character of the activist, who overthrow the established organization, and the seclusionist, who pursue freedom by deviating from the established society. The teenager also revolted against the traditional basis of value as well as the established society, and tried to express their life and feeling by the way they dress. The most representative clothing is "jeans". The specific things the young tried to express are as followed. First, it was the expression of revolt. The youngs' urge to express rebellious sprit with jeans can be shown in the movie characters' outfit. The young represents their new conciousness, different from that of the older generations, with jeans. Second, it was the expression of freedom. For the young breaking away from the capitalistic and materialistic society's spiritual freedom and the established culture, jeans became the clothing that express political and social freedom and the democratic freedom, which was in pursuit of freely class, sex and social status. Also, it was clothing that express mental freedom and accords with the nature, without being sensitive to what we wear. Third, jeans was the most representative clothing which expressed unisex. After the World WarⅡ by women's active launch into society, women's liberation movement and struggle for equal rights in the traditional differentiation of one's role in society by the distiction of sex in dress slowly unfeebled. The jeans is the best dress that represent the ideology of equality between both sexes. Fourth, it was the expression of eroticism. Showing off their body's curvaceous lines by wearing jeans tightly, the young tried to express exotic sensation. As above, the jeans expression can be largely divided by revolt, freedom, unisex and eroticism. In conclusion, jeans can be seen as a form of self expression of young people, different from that of the older generation.;본 논문은 젊은 세대의 대표적인 복식중의 하나인 진즈(jeans)에 표현된 미의식을 연구하는데 목적을 두고 진즈 패션(jeans fashion)의 변천 과정과 1960년대 미국청년문화의 출현과 양상을 고찰하였다. 1960년대 미국은 외적인 기준에 의해 평가되는 능력, 업적 위주의 사고 방식과 물질만능주의가 팽배했던 사회로 이에 대한 저항의 풍조가 문학, 예술 등 사회 제반적인 분야에서 일어나고 있었다. 이러한 사회에 대해 저항하는 풍조속에서 숫자적인 증가와 지적인 측면에서 사회 비판 세력으로 성장하게 된 젊은이들은 기성세대에 대한 반문화를 창조하게 되었으며, 당시 젊은이들은 그 시대의 주역이었다. 복식에 있었서도 1950년대에는 비록 하이 패션(high fashion)의 영향력이 컸지만 이미 젊은이들의 패션 시장이 조성되어 있었고, 1960년대는 본격적으로 젊은이들 중심의 영 패션(young fashion)이 나타나 미국을 비롯한 세계 각국에 젊음지향의 패션이 나타나게 되었으며, 그러한 영 패션의 대표적인 복식중의 하나가 바로 진즈였다. 진즈 패션의 출현과 그 변천과정은 다음과 같다. 진즈는 1853년 Levi Strauss에 의해 처음 탄생하여 1940년대까지 오랜 기간 동안 노동자들의 작업복이었다. 이것은 1950년대에 청년들의 일반적인 복식으로 수용되어 1960년대에는 저항, 자유를 표현하는 청년문화의 상징적인 복식이 되었다. 이후 1960년대말부터 젊은이들에게서 나타났던 진즈의 패션화가 점차 보편화 되면서 진즈는 패션화, 다양하 시대를 맞이 하게 되었으며 오늘날에는 개성에 따른 다양한 진즈가 나타나고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이 1950대를 거쳐 1960년대에 청년들의 대표적인 복식으로 정착하게 된 진즈는 그 당시의 청년문화와 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 당시 젊은이들은 물질적이고 비인간적인 기성 사회에 대해서 저항하고, 인위적이고 위선적인 기존 체제에 반기를 들었으며, 이러한 저항의 표현을 직접 행동으로 나타내고 있었다. 그들의 이러한 반항의 움직임은 기존 체제의 전복을 기도하는 저항적인 성격을 띤 저항적인 행동파와 기존사회를 변혁시키기 보다는 그것으로부터 이탈해 버림으로써 자유를 추구하는 은둔파로 그 운동의 양상이 나타났다. 이러한 젊은이들의 기성 세대에 대한 감정은 그들의 대표적인 복식인 진즈를 통해 잘 나타나고 있었다. 1960년대 미국의 청년문화운동 속에서 젊은이들이 진즈를 착용함으로써 표현하고자 했던 미의식을 구체적으로 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 진즈는 젊은이들의 새로운 의식을 표현해 주는 기성 세대에 대한 대표적인 저항의 복식이었다. 둘째, 진즈는 물질 만능 사회에서의 정신적 자유와 정치·사회적 자유, 계급·성별·신분에 구애받지 않는 민주적인 자유를 표현해주는 복식이었고, 또한 옷에 구속되지 않는 심리적 자유를 나타내주는 자유의 복식이었다. 세째, 진즈는 여성 해방 운동, 남녀 평등 사상에 따라 남녀의 성적구별의 약화를 표현한 Unisex의 대표적인 복식이었다. 네째, 꼭 낀 진즈는 신체의 곡선미를 보여 Eroticism을 표현했다. 이상과 같이 진즈에 대한 미국의 젊은 세대의 미의식은 저항, 자유, Unisex, Eroticism으로 크게 구분할 수 있으며, 결국 진즈는 기성 세대와는 다른 자기를 표현하기 위한 자기 표현 수단으로 볼 수 있다.
