Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between thought and language of Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, based on his cultural-historical development theory, and to consider educational meaning of Vygotsky's theory. The questions in this study are phrased as follows. 1. What is Vygotsky's position and role of his relation between thought and language among the theories of relation between thought and language? 2. What is prescribed the relation between thought and language by Vygotsky and how is related to his cultural-historical development theory? 3. What is educational meaning of the Vygotsky's relation between thought and language and his cultural-historical development theory? In this study, the Vygotsky's relation between thought and language is connected with his cultural-historical development theory and bring the educational significance of Vygotsky's theory into relief. The results of this study were summarized as follows. The Vygotsky's relation between thought and language is closely connected with the maturity of the higher mental function in a viewpoint of his cultural-historical approach. The higher mental function was formed through historical evolution processes, and it was made up through social interaction between each individual person and the culture in society. In this processes, the thinking pattern of the society was internalized the inside of individual. Vygotsky regarded the tool of this internalization as language. In consequence, Vygotsky empasized on the complex transformations that constitute human growth. The higher mental function developmented through this transformations that objective reality agree with subjective cognition. The human higher mental function in the individual cultural development appears twice, on two levels. First, on the social, and later on the psychological level; first, between peoples as an interpsychological category, and then inside the individual, as an intrapsychological category. Vygotsky considered human to be active. Vygotsky thought that human change naturs, and change himself at the same time. In this transformational processes, language is served as a significant tool or mediator. Like this, the higher mental function is closely related to transformation and the relation between thought and language. Moreover, Vygotsky brought the social interaction into relief when individual internalized the higher mental function. The social interaction in significant in the child's cognitive development. That is to say, Vygotsky regarded cognitive development as the internalization of social meanings. Also, Vygotsky considered language as an essential factor for cognitive development. Language is important not only as a channel of internalizing social meanings but also as a way of getting out of the limit of psysical environment. Therefore Vygotsky's viewpoint previews us that the interaction child and the society, that is, the interaction childs and an adult or an competent the age is made an offer for the child's cognitive development in education field. Also, Vygotsky's viewpoint previews us the extensive role of education.
