원불교의 남녀평등사상과 실천에 관한 연구

Abstract

This dissertation examines doctrinal bases and practices of gender equality in Won Buddhism: how gender equal ideas are praciticed, and the selective practices, in the course of application of the doctrines, the problems and the ways of improvement are discussed. The purpose and the significance of this study is explained in the first chapter as an introduction. The motive of this study is that there certainly is a very progressive doctrine of gender equality in Won Buddhism in comparison with another religion. however there are also unequal practices in reality. Systems and organizations are formed on the ground of doctrines, and therefore problematic systems or customs can be amended with respect to doctrines. Since Won Buddhism is committed to gender equality and has a relativery short history, it is much easier to make amendment in order to achieve better gender equality in Won Buddhism composed with existing old religions. The significance of this study is to reveal actual problems concerning gender equality in Won Buddhism, and urge actions to better practice. The second chapter, it is examines how religion is analyzed by feminist viewpoint as theoretical discussion. Background information on the tradition of oriental ideas where Won Buddhism is rooted is given: especially the religious thought of Hu-chun-ge-byok(後天開闢) which is idealistic stream of ethnic religion at the age when Yon Buddhism was disscused. This is the ideal bases where the possibility to overcome above proposed problems can be found. In addition, the existing studies are investigated and the method of this study is explained. The third chapter investigats that basic equality in the truth of "11-Won-Sang", and gender equal right between inseparable "the Four Graces" which is the origin of the being and "the Four Essentials" which shows the concrete content of gender equal ideas. In the fourth chapter, we see how well the doctrines are applicable to daily lives in the process of practicing gender equality through various literature of Won Buddhism. The tangible content is how the characteristics of women who were converted to Won Buddhism at the beginning a period were, which education was trainings were given to them, how the Sotaesan taught them, which process was to fix the Clergy-women system, which role was taken to the clergy-women, and what their degree of participation in the organization of the the temple was. Also, it is inspected what the content of the New law of Courtesy and manner was, how the process of its practice was. and how its influence on women was. The fifth chapter showes that Won Buddhism is inclined to support gender equality and has practiced these ideas in several ways. But, there are unequal practices in reality. They can be theorised as sexual division of occupation, sexual division of labor. There are other practical problems such as duble standard of sexual norms. married clergy-men's familial problems , and so on. It is necessary to study why these problems arise and how they can be solved. The sixth chapter proposes a comprehensive discussion, about the future direction and the limits of this study.;이 연구는 원불교 남녀평등의 교리적 근거는 무엇이며, 남녀평등사상을 어떻게 실천해 오고 있으며, 교리를 현실에 적용시켜 가는 과정에서 어떤 부분은 수용되고 어떤 부분은 배제되었으며, 그 과정에서 나타나는 문제점과 개선방안은 무엇인지를 살펴보는 글이다. 1장은 도입부분으로 이 글을 쓰게 된 배경 및 연구의 목적과 의의를 밝혔다. 다른 종교에 비해 원불교의 교리는 매우 남녀평등적이지만, 현실에서는 불평등한 문제도 나타나고 있어서 이 연구를 하게 되었다. 종교는 교리를 바탕으로 모든 제도와 조직이 갖춰지므로 잘못된 제도나 관행은 교리에 비추어 개선할 수 있다. 원불교는 남녀평등을 지향하고 있고, 제도나 조직도 완전히 굳어진 것이 아니라 차츰 정비해 가는 도중에 있으므로, 현실을 개선하는데 힘을 모으면 보다 더 남녀평등한 교단으로 성장할 수 있다. 남녀평등의 근거가 되는 교리를 살펴보고, 그동안의 실천과정을 고찰하는 동시에 현실에서 나타난 문제점을 드러내어 개선의 방안을 제시하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 2장은 원불교에 대한 기존의 여성학적 연구는 어떤 것이 있으며, 그 연구들의 특징은 무엇인지를 살펴보는 선행연구를 먼저 검토해 보았다. 그 다음은 이론적인 논의로 종교에 대한 여성학적인 관점을 살펴보고, 이 글의 연구방법을 수록했다. 3장은 교리에 나타난 남녀평등으로, 원불교의 교리에 대한 분석에 앞서 원불교 남녀평등사상의 근원이 되는 동양사상의 전통에 나타난 남녀평등, 원불교가 창교되던 시대 민족종교의 사상적 흐름이 되는 후천개벽사상에 나타난 남녀평등의 내용은 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 원불교 교리의 남녀평등사상에서는 일원상 진리(一圓相 眞理)의 근원적인 평등, 만물이 만물에게 서로 없어서는 살 수 없으므로 존재의 근원이 되는 사은(四恩), 사회개혁과 남녀평등사상의 구체적인 내용을 제시하는 사요(四要)의 남녀권리동일을 여성학적 관점에서 고찰하였다. 4장은 원불교에서 남녀평등을 실천해 가는 과정을 교단내의 각종 문헌을 통해 살펴보므로써 교리가 얼마나 현실에 잘 적응되고 있는지를 알아보았다. 초기 교단에 귀의한 여성들은 자신이 처한 현실에 대해 문제의식을 가지고 있었다. 원불교의 남녀평등적 교리가 모양을 갖추고 실천되어 가는 과정에서 초기 여성제자들의 역할과 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 그들은 남자와 똑같은 과정의 교육과 훈련을 받았으며, 여자교무제도는 그들의 의견제출에 의해 제정되었고, 여자교무들이 교단의 조직에 남자와 평등하게 참여할 수 있었다. 또한 신정예법(新定禮法)을 제정하여 실생활에서 평등을 실현하려고 했음을 살펴보았다. 5장은 원불교가 남녀평등을 지향하고 여러 방면에서 남녀평등을 실천해 왔으나 현실적으로 나타나는 불평등도 있는데, 그 내용으로 성별직종분리와 성역할분리, 결혼하는 남자교무와 가족문제, 정녀가 되는 여자교무와 성이중규범 등을 살펴보았다. 이러한 문제가 나타나게 된 원인과, 개선방안에 대해서 살펴보았다. 6장은 결론 부분으로 이글에 대한 종합논의와 원불교에서 남녀평등을 보다 더 잘 실현할 수 있는 방향에 대한 연구자의 제언과 이 연구의 한계를 밝혔다.
