Michael Heizer 작품의 조형적 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

상업주의에 물든 현대 사회의 예술에 반발하여 순수성을 되찾으려는 노력의 일환으로 대지미술이 발생하였고, 그러한 대지미술가 중 자연과 예술을 새로운 각도로 조명하여 인식하기 위해 전통적 개념에서 벗어나 자연을 표현의 재료로써 이용하여 예술의본래적 의미를 표현하고자 한 Michael Heizer의 작품의 조형적 특성을 도출하여 체계화할 필요가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 Michael Heizer의 작품을 분석하여 그 조형적 특성을 규명하는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 현대미술, 대지미술, Michael Heizer의 예술 세계를 이론적 배경으로 하여 Michael Heizer 작품을 전시 장소에 따라 실외 작품과 실내작품으로 나누어 분석하고 그 특성을 규명하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 단행본, Catalogue, 미술 잡지 등의 선행 연구와 작품을 기본 도구로 하였다. 작품 표집은 Michael Heizer 작품의 조형적 특성을 규명하기 위하여 1965년부터 1985년까지 발표된 작품중 그 특성이 적절히 표현되었다고 간주된 총 37 점을 목적 표출하였다. 자료 처리는 실외 작품에서는 공간, 형태, 시간의 표현, 장비의 사용, 작품의 영구성을 관점으로하여 분석하였고, 실내 작품에서는 형태, 자료, 공간, 구성방법을 관점으로하여 분석하였다. Michael Heizer작품을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. Micheal Heizer 작품에서의 일관된 조형 의지는, 원시 고고학적인 유적과 유물로부터의 영향중에서 단순한 기하학적 형태에 대한 관심과 그것이 주는 추상적인 개념을 표현하려는 노력이었고, 전제 또는 부분적으로 자연에서 도출한 가공되지않은 상태 그대로의 재료를 사용하여 표현하였으며, 1980년대 이후의 후기 작품에는 철이나 stainless steel, 알미늄 등의 금속의 사용이 늘어났다. 2. 대지에서 일부의 흙을 제거하거나 지나간 자국을 남기는 방식으로 표현된 작품은 주변의 자연환경과 비나 바람 등의 자연현상까지도 작품내용에 포함하여 시각적 변화에의한 시간의 흐름을 표현하였고, 단순형태들을 수학적 공식에의해 분할하고 그것들을 쌓거나 펼쳐놓는 방식으로 표현된 작품은 작품을 이루는 개별적 요소들이 가지는 가치보다는 전체 구조로서 파악되는 부분으로의 역할을 중시했고, 수평이나 수직구조의 정적인 공간을 형성했다. 3. Michael Heizer의 자연 환경을 이용한 작품은 예술 작품의 상업성과 조각 작품에 대한 고정관념에서 벗어난 방법으로 공간과 Mass의 대립적 관계를 표현하였으며, 거대한 규모와 단순한 형태로서 자연과 가까워지려는 원시적 사상을 형상화하였고, 자연과 오브제에 대한 개념을 새롭게 정립하려 하였다. 조각 작품을 규정짓는 지금까지의 한계에서 벗어나고자 노력한 Michael Heizer의 작품은 예술과 민간과 자연을 일치시키려는 시도로 보여 진다.;Earthworks, or Landart, have been attempted in efforts to recover purity of art, refusing the contemporary art in which commercialism is prevailing. Michael Heizer is one of the earthworks artists who tried to appreciate the nature and art from a new perspective, surpassing the conventional art concept. He has endeavoured to express in his works the original meaning of art, by adopting nature as an expressional tool. I would be a necessary and worth-while work to research and theorize the sculptural characteristics in Michael Heizer's landart. This study aims at analyzing his art works and finding out their sculptural characteristics. For this purpose, I classified his works into two parts according to their exhibition locations, i.e. indoor works and outdoor ones. My research has been done with theoretical study of contemporary art, landart, and Michael Heizer's art world. Preceding studies and existing art works have been utilized by me for this study, such as books, catalogues, and art magazines. Total 37 works have been selected from his works made during 1965 till 1985, as they are deemed to represent his art characteristics. Outdoor works have been analyzed with more emphasis one space, form, expression of time, use of equipment, eternality, etc. For analysis of indoor works emphasis was given to form, material, space and composition method. The result of my study is as follows: 1. Michael Heizer's consistent concern has been given to basic and simple geometric forms borrowed from primitive archaeological remains and relics. He kept on trying to express abstract concept of the geometric forms. He used nature itself and raw material from nature, not processed ones, partly or in whole for his works. In his early works natural materials were mainly used, but after 1980s use of iron, stainless steel, aluminium and other metal has gradually increased. 2. His outdoor works have been made by means of removing natural soil partly or leaving trodden traces. He used natural environments and phenomena as material for his work. Change of visual shape by natural phenomena such as rain and wind made it possible to express temporary and momentary time factor. In his works, simple forms were divided according to mathmatical formula, then heaped up or spread to form static space of horizontal or vertical structure. More emphasis was given to the role of each form as part of whole structure, rather than individual value of each form. 3. Michael Heizer in his works expressed the contrasting relationship between space and Mass, breaking conventional idea on sculptural works and commercialism. He materialized the primitive idea to come close to the nature, by using gigantic scale and simple form. He also endeavoured to set up a new concept on nature and objective. His works are regarded as an effort to harmonize art, human and nature.
