Ben Jonson의 "Non-dramatic poetry"에 나타난 이상주의 연구

Abstract

Ben Jonson은 John Donne과 함께 17세기 영시의 양대 산맥을 이루는 시인이다. Donne이 개인의 내면적 사실주의에 치중했다면 Jonson은 Tribe of Ben의 구심점으로서 보다 더 사회적인 목소리를 대변하고 있는 것이다. 특히 그는 개인적으로는 귀족계급에 속하지 못하면서도 그 계급의 가치관에 근간을 두고 그의 나름대로의 이상 세계를 구축해 나가고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Jonson이 그의 시를 통해 표현하고자 했던 가치관을 인간과 사회, 두 가지로 나누어서 고찰했으며 마지막으로 그 전달방식을 살펴보았다. Jonson은 시를 통해 도덕적으로 갖추어진 ‘good man’을 칭찬함으로써 인간에 대한 자신의 이상을 표현함과 아울러 독자를 교육하고자 한다. Epigrammes의 많은 시들이 찬사시와 비난으로 분류될 수 있다. 찬사시는 대부분 그의 후원자들에게 보낸 것이기는 하지만 여기서도 각 인물은 개인이기를 넘어서 Jonson이 그들에게 부여한 미덕의 상징이 된다. 이러한 이상적인 인간들이 만들어내는 세계가 Jonson의 ‘idel world’이다. 이 곳은 ‘good man’들이 행복하게 살아가는 곳으로서 ‘social order’가 그 바탕에 깔려있다. 현실에서 존재하지는 않지만 마땅히 되어야 할 세계로서 무질서하고 절대적인 세상의 귀감이 된다. 그리고 Jonson은 위의 두 주제를 전달함에 있어서 고전에서 습득한 ‘plan style’을 사용한다. 대화체적이기도한 이 문체는 진리를 전달하기에 적합한 방식으로 간결하면서도 의도를 분명히 드러내는 시를 가능하게 했다. 또한 독자와 시인과의 친밀성을 높이고 또 주제를 보다 명료하게 전달하는 효과를 거두고 있다. 이것은 ‘social poet’로서 독자를 교육하고자 하는 그의 이상에 잘 들어맞는 것이었다. 그의 시는 때로는 권력자에 대한 아부나 자신의 처지에 대한 호소의 도구로 사용되었다. 그러나 이 모든 경우에도 그의 이상주의는 직접, 간접으로 나타나며 그 수단은 Elizabeth여왕 시대의 화려한 형식이 아니라 “plain and customary”한 언어였다. 그는 최초의 윤리적 시인은 아니지만 그의 도덕적 이상을 미학적 도구 속에 성공적으로 표현한 시인이었다.;Ben Jonson, along with John Donne, makes up the two main streams of seventeenth century English poetry. Whereas Donne put emphasis on portraying the inner reality of individuals, jonson, as the Father of the Tribe of Ben, reprsents a more social view. Although Jonson did not belong to the Aristocracy, he based his ideal world on the values of that class. This thesis has studied the values that Jonson expressed in his poetry from the differing view points of man and society, as well as the way Jonson expresses those values. Jonson tries to express his ideal of man and to educate his readers by praising the morally 'good man' in his poetry. Most of the poems in "Epigrammes" can be categorized into two groups: those of praise, and those of blame. The poems of praise are generally those dedicated to his patrons, but in these poems each character eventually evolves into a symbol of the virtues that Jonson projects into them. The world that these ideal characters make up is the 'ideal world' of Jonson. This world, a place where 'good men' live happily, is constructed on the concept of the 'social order' of Christian Humanism. Though it does not really exist, Jonsan's ideal world is one that he yearns for and thinks that should rightly exist, as an example to the disorderly and hostile world of his time. In expressing the above themes, Jonson uses the 'plain style' that he learned from the classics. This style, which tends to be conversational, is appropriate in voicing his views and made it possible for him to write poems that were short but to the point. It also promotes the intimacy between the poet and his readers, and has the effect of expressing his themes more clearly. This was appropriate to his ideal of educating his readers as a social poet. At times, Jonson's poems were used as means of flattery toward powerful man, or as a forum for the airing of his grieviances. But even in these occasions, his idealism shows, through the medium of 'plain and customary' language, and not the eloquent style of the Elizabethan Age. This proves that Jonson did not give up his ideals and pride as a poet to the end. Jonson may not be the first moral poet, but he certainly was the moral poet of his time who successfully expressed his moral ideals through esthetic mediums.
