Ernst Bacon의 <Five Poems by Emily Dickinson>에 대한 연구

Abstract

Ernst Bacon(1898~ )은 20세기 중반에 주로 활동한 미국 현대 작곡자로서 피아노 연주, 작곡 등 여러 음악 분야에 걸쳐서 활약한 뛰어난 음악가이다. 많은 현대 작곡가들이 무조성(atonal music)과 우연성(happening event) 법칙을 적용시켜 음악을 만들어 온 것과는 달리 Bacon은 그의 작품 가운데 대부분을 분명한 조성감 (tonality)이 느껴지도록 작곡하였다. 특히 Bacon은 목소리를 통해서 그의 음악적 사상을 펼쳐 나갔다고 할 수 있을 만큼 많은 성악곡을 작곡하였다. 성악곡에서는 (붓점, 당김음 등의 변화 리듬이) 영어로 된 시를 자연스럽게 말하는 것처럼 처리하기 위해 사용되었고 이들은 다양한 곡 분위기를 만들어 내고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 그의 작곡 성향이 잘 나타나 있는 작품「Five Poems by Emily Dickinson」을 분석하여 그의 특징적인 음악 양식을 연구하고자 한다. 이 작품은 E. Dicknson의 시에 작곡되었다는 것 이외에는 서로 특별히 연관성을 가지지 않는 5개의 노래로 이루어져 있다. 이 곡들에는 Bacon의 성악곡 특징인 미국 음악의 다양한 소재가 사용되었다기 보다는 장·단조 화성의 혼합기법과 선법의 이용, 대위적 기법 등이 사용되었다. 각 곡의 선율선은 그리 복잡하지 않아 간결성을 띠며 다른 작곡가의 현대 성악곡들처럼 심한 도약 선율을 사용하기 보다는 부드러운 순차적 선율이 주로 사용되었다. 반주부는 자주 성악 선율선을 모방하여 전개되며 형식은 시의 절과 일치되게 나뉘어 진다. 그리고 조성은 관계조를 중심으로 움직이나 변화 화음의 사용으로 장·단조의 구분이 명확하지 않은 모호한 음색이 나타나기도 한다. Bacon은 유럽 음악의 영향권에서 벗어나 독자적인 미국 예술가곡을 창작한 Charles Ives 이후 현재까지 작곡가들의 맥을 이어주는 가곡 작곡가이며, 미국적 음악소재 사용 등의 새로운 음악양식은 20세기 현대 미국 가곡의 방향을 제시해 주고 있다.;Emst Bacon(1898~ ), a modern American musical composer who took an active part in the middle 20th century, is a great musician in various fields of music such as piano playing and composing. Different from other modern composers who have mostly made musical works applied to atornal music with happening event rule, Bacon made his most works have clear tonality feelings. Especially, he composed many vocal works enough to be said that he showed his own idea of music by means of voice. In his vocal works, there are used such irregular timing rhythms as pointed - notes or syncopations in order to deal with English poems in such a way as they seem to be spoken in natural ways, so that it results in various moods of works. The present treatise has a purpose to study his characteristic musical style through looking into his <Five Poems by Emilly Dickinson> which reveals his composing style very well. This work comprises five songs which have no specific relations with one another except they are all composed according to poems of Emily Dickinson. In these songs, such techniques are used as mixtures of major·minor harmony, modes and counterpoint rather than various American type materials which characterize Bacon's other vocal works. Each song's melody line doesn't have a complexity but a simplicity, and soft successive motions are mostly used different from skip or disjunct motions of other composers' modem vocal musics. The accompaniments are usually developed through imitations of vocal melody lines, and their forms divided according to the lines of the poems. The tonality is moved by its relative keys, but the uses of altered chords cause ambiguous tones whose distinctions are difficult to identify whether they are major or minor. Bacon is a vocal composer succeeding modern American composers who have created original American artistic vocal musics out of European influences since Charles Ives. His new musical style including use of American musical materials suggested a desirable direction of modem American vocal music in the 20th century.
