한국영화에 사용된 한국음악적 요소의 고찰

Abstract

문화 산업은 서비스산업 중 으뜸가는 지식기반 산업으로 현대의 과학기술과 미디어매체를 통하여 문화 상품과 서비스를 생산ㆍ유통하는 산업을 말한다. 즉, 거대한 생산설비나 자본이 없이도 창의적인 지식과 아이디어만으로 엄청난 부를 창출할 수 있는 고부가가치의 산업이다. 이러한 문화산업 중 가장 부가가치가 뛰어나고 종합적인 콘텐츠를 생산하는 것이 영상산업이며, 그 중에서도 영상산업의 원형이라고 할 수 있는 극영화 제작의 영화산업은 영상산업에서 차지하는 비중과 역할이 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 특히 멀티미디어 시대인 21세기에 접어들면서 영상기술과의 결합이라는 영화의 특성상, 영상기술의 신속한 발전에 힘입어 다른 예술 분야에 비해 짧은 시간에 비약적인 발전을 거두고 있는 분야라 하겠다. 영화음악도 예외는 아니다. ‘종합예술’로써의 영화를 보다 성공적으로 만들기 위한 음악의 중요성과 효과를 인식하고, 과거 단순한 영상 보조 수단인 배경음악의 차원에서 벗어나 이제는 하나의 독립된 예술로써의 가치를 인정받고 있다. 바람직한 영화음악이란 한 작품 안에서 하나 또는 몇 개의 테마를 설정하고 그것을 정경 ·무드 ·등장인물의 감정과 심리 등에 맞추어 반복해서 제시함으로써 관객에게 영상에서 받은 이미지에 어울리는 음악적 이미지를 전할 수 있는 것이라 하겠다. 즉, 화면과 잘 어우러지면서도 관객으로 하여금 영화를 보고 난 후에도 음악적 이미지로의 영화로도 기억될 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 반젤리스에게 아카데미 시상식 최우수 영화음악상의 영예를 안겨 준 <불의 전차>(1981)의 음악이나 영화의 내용은 모르더라도 음악만 들으면 대번에 <황야의 무법자>(1964)임을 알 수 있는 엔니오 모리꼬네의 곡이 그 대표적인 예라 하겠다. 그렇다면 한국영화가 이미지로써의 한국영화음악을 각인시킬 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까? 그것은 바로 영화음악에 한국음악적 요소를 첨가시키는 것이다. 물론 앞서 예로 들었던 영화음악은 민족적인 요소를 첨가하여 음악적 이미지화에 성공한 것은 아니지만, 다른 나라의 관객이 한국의 영화를 볼 경우 기억에 남는 영화음악의 이미지를 갖게 하는 데에는 더없이 좋은 방법이 아닐 수 없을 것이라는 생각에서 유추해본 것이다. 한국음악적 요소란 한국 전통악기의 음색이나 전통적 음계인 5음 음계, 한국 고유의 시김새나 농현 등으로 한국적인 색채를 만들어낼 수 있는 요소를 뜻한다. 이러한 한국음악적 요소는 세계 그 어느 나라에서도 흉내낼 수 없는 우리만의 것이며, 이러한 한국음악적 요소만이 우리의 독특한 음악을 창출해 낼 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법이라 여겨진다. 우리나라도 영화산업의 급격한 성장과 더불어 1990년대 이후 비로소 영화음악을 화면에 맞춰 적당히 만들어 넣거나 골라 넣는 조미료 차원으로부터 벗어나기 시작했다. 1997년에는 영화의 기획 단계부터 올드 팝(Old Pop)을 주요 모티브로 사용하여 상품으로 영화음악 Original Sound Track(이하 O.S.T.) 음반을 기획한 <접속> O.S.T.의 성공이 국내 영화음악의 상업적 가능성을 보여주었다. 이에 따라 영화에서 음악이 차지하는 비중이 높아짐은 물론이고, 음악을 이용해 기능적 측면을 강조하려는 참신한 시도들이 계속되고 있다. 본 연구는 '제 5차 영화법 개정' 이후인 1986년부터 현재(2006년)까지의 한국영화 중 시대적 배경이나 등장인물의 심리 묘사 등을 위해 한국음악적 요소를 사용한 영화에 어떠한 방법으로 한국음악적인 요소를 삽입하였는지 알아보고자 한다. 먼저 한국음악과 한국영화음악의 변천사 및 한국영화음악감독과 한국영화감독에 대하여 설명한 뒤 한국영화에 쓰인 한국음악적 요소의 실질적인 분석을 통해 한국영화음악의 현 위치와 앞으로의 발전 방향을 모색해 본다. 연구방법은 ‘한국 영화 데이터베이스’에 등록된 전체 한국 영화 중, 1986년~2006년 사이 제작된 한국음악적 요소 포함 영화들을 선별한 뒤 음악상 수상 경력이 있는 작품 또는 흥행에 성공한 작품, 수상작이나 흥행 성공작이 아니더라도 한국음악적 요소를 효과적으로 사용하여 뛰어난 음악성을 보여준 작품을 위주로 영화음악에 사용된 음악적 특징과 경향을 분석해 보고자 한다. 영화에 있어서 영화음악은 대사나 음향효과 같이 줄거리를 전달하는 기능 외에 시간적ㆍ공간적 배경을 설명해 주거나 등장인물의 내면 심리 또는 영상의 시간적 도약이나 생략을 자연스럽게 연결시켜주는 연결고리 역할 등을 한다. 그 중 한국음악적 요소가 포함된 영화음악을 사용하는 경우는 주로 시대극의 시간적 배경을 나타내기 위한 경우가 대부분이었다. 시간적 배경을 나타낸다는 공통점을 가지고 있지만 각기 다른 표현 방법으로 한국음악적 요소를 나타내고 있으며, 그 기능과 효과 또한 매우 다른 것을 알 수 있다. 본 연구를 하면서 한국영화에서 한국음악적 요소의 사용이 시대극이라는 지극히 제한적인 분야에서만 이루어지고 있음을 더욱 확실하게 느끼게 되었다. ‘어떤 나라든지 발전을 거듭하면 할수록 고유의 민족음악을 찾게 된다.’는 말이 있다. 한국적인 것은 세계 그 어느 민족도 아닌 우리 즉, 한국인이 발전시키고 표현해내어야 진정한 가치와 맛을 살릴 수 있을 것이다. 아직은 극소수인 한국영화 속 한국음악적 요소 사용이 장르의 구분을 막론하고 확산되고 대중화되면서 세계화 되는 날까지 영화산업 종사자들의 보다 많은 노력과 연구가 필요할 것이다.;Culture industry, as the top knowledge based industry in service industry field, is to produce and distribute cultural products and services through media and modern scientific technologies. That is, it is a high value added industry that can make a great fortune only with knowledge and ideas without huge facilities and capitals. And the highest value added and the integrated contents producing industry of culture industries is visual industry and film industry making movies, as the original form of visual industry, plays a big role in visual industry. Especially with a specialty of film, combined with visual technology in this multimedia age, 21st century, it is a field making a big improvement in a short time with a quick development of visual technology, compared to other art field. Film music is not exceptional. It recognized an importance and effects of music for more successful film as a 'composite art', got out of a background music level, a simple assistant tool, and now it is receiving much recognition on its value as an independent art. Desirable film music is to set one or a couple of themes in one film and present them repeatedly, appropriately for scenes, mood, emotions and feelings of characters so that it finally delivers the musical images matching visual images to an audience. Therefore, it should be matched with images and remembered as a film of musical images by audience. A music of <Charioits Of Fire> (1981) that gave Vangelis the best film music award in Academy Award or A piece of Ennio Morricone that makes people realize <A Fistful of Dollars> if they listen to the music even though they do not know what the film said are typical models. Then, how can Korean film imprint Korean film music on as an image? It is, to add Korean musical elements in film music. Of course foregoing film music did not succeed in musical imagination with national elements added, I assumed that it can not be better to make an audience have images of film music remembered in case that foreigners watch Korean film. Korean musical elements are elements that can make Korean color with the traditional musical instrument's sound, traditional 5 musical scales, Si-Gim-Sae and Nong-Hyun. These Korean musical elements are our own unique ones that no other countries can follow and I think it is the best way to entrust these Korean musical elements with creating our unique music. Together with a rapid development of Korean film industry, after 1990s for the first time, it started to get out of film music as a picked up seasoning appropriately for shots. In 1997, the success of <The contact> O.S.T. planning film music, Original Sound Track with a guiding motif of Old Pop at the planning step of film showed the commercial possibility of Korean film music. So the music in film is given much weight and various creative attempts are coming to strengthen the functional side with music. This research will find out how Korean musical elements inserted in film to describe a historical background and characters' emotions among Korean films from 1986 - after 'the fifth film law revision'- to 2006. At first, I explain Korean music, a history of Korean film music, Korean film music director and Korean film director and seek out the present position and the future development of Korean film music through an actual analysis on Korean musical elements. The research is progressed as follows. After selecting films containing Korean musical elements made in from 1986 to 2006 among the entire Korean films registered in 'Korean film database', I will analyze the musical features and trends used in film music around films showing the excellent musicality with the efficient Korean musical elements even though it is not awarded in film music, a big run, or awarded in film festival. Film music in film plays a function that explains the historical and spatial backgrounds or connects a character's emotion or images' timing skip or omission, besides delivers a story like words and sound effects. The cases using film music containing Korean musical elements are mostly to show a historical background of a historical drama. Though it is to show a historical background in common, it shows Korean musical elements in different expressions and it seems that the function and effect are also much different. to strengthen the functional side with music. There is a saying ‘Whichever countries, the more going through developments, it can finally find its own national music.’ Something Korean, it will be us, Korean to develop and express it for creating its real value and flavor, not any of nations of the world. It is not common to use Korean musical elements in Korean film but till the day the use of Korean musical elements in Korean film becomes popular and international, the more efforts and researches are necessary by people working in film industry.
