영화 속에 나타난 바흐 음악과 장면과의 상관관계

Abstract

영화 음악은 영화를 위한 음악으로 영화의 장르와 내용, 인물, 분위기, 그리고 장면의 특징 등과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 영화에서 음악은 영화를 위해 창작된 음악이건 기존 음악이건 상관없이 다양한 영화적 요소들과 관계성을 맺고 있다. 본 연구는 기존 음악 중에서 영화에 사용된 바흐 음악을 연구 대상으로 선정하여, 영화 음악의 기능적 측면에서 바흐 음악과 영화 장면간의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 먼저 영화음악의 개괄적인 역사와 영화 음악의 기능, 그리고 바흐의 생애와 작품세계를 살펴봄으로써 이론적인 토대를 잡았다. 구체적인 연구 방법으로는 바흐 음악이 사용된 영화의 리스트를 참고하여 50편 이상의 영화들을 시청한 후, 바흐 음악이 의미 있게 사용된 영화들을 채택하여 개별적 영화에서 바흐 음악의 기능을 분석하였다. 분석에 포함된 바흐 작품으로는 관현악 모음곡 3번, 브란덴부르크 협주곡 3번과 5번, 골드베르크 변주곡, 무반주 첼로 모음곡 1번, 마태 수난곡, 칸타타 BWV140이 있다. 분석 결과 바흐 음악은 영화 장면의 분위기와 주인공의 심리, 그리고 영화의 주제와 메시지를 전달하는데 효과적으로 사용된 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히 관현악 모음곡과 브란덴부르크 협주곡은 영화의 분위기를 잘 표현해주었고, 골드베르크 변주곡과 무반주 첼로 모음곡은 주인공의 심리와 정서를 대변해주고 있었으며, 마태수난곡과 칸타타 BWV140은 영화의 주제와 장면의 메시지를 확실하게 전달해주고 있었다. 또한 바흐 작품의 음악적 특징들을 분석한 결과 영화에 사용된 바흐 음악은 복잡한 대위법적 요소보다는 사람들이 듣기에 편안한 음악적 특징, 예를 들어 예측 가능한 선율의 반복, 베이스 선율의 하행 진행, 분산화음 진행, 협화음의 화성 진행, 그리고 단순한 곡의 형식 등의 특징들을 보이고 있었다. 또한 바흐 작품의 작곡 목적, 특히 귀족의 행사에 사용되기 위해 작곡된 곡들이 영화에서도 화려한 만찬회 장면에서 사용되고 있었다. 그리고 영화에 사용된 바흐의 종교음악에서는 가사가 영화의 메시지를 전달하는 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있다. 클래식 음악은 무성 영화 시대부터 영화음악으로 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그러나 클래식 음악의 사용에 대한 관심에도 불구하고 영화에 사용된 클래식 음악에 대한 체계적이고 분석적인 연구가 이루어지지 못하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 앞으로 영화에 사용된 클래식 음악에 대해 깊이 있는 연구가 이루어진다면, 무한한 양의 클래식 음악이 영화에서 더욱 의미 있게 사용될 수 있을 것이다. 더 나아가 이러한 연구는 영화를 위해 새로운 음악을 만들 때에도 영화 음악의 기능적 측면에서 영화의 내용과 장면에 부합하는 음악을 제작할 수 있도록 도와줄 것이다.;Film music is music for films, and is closely related to the genre, contents, characters and atmosphere of a film, as well as the features of its scenes. Film music, whether original or preexisting, is an essential part of the film. The specific method of the study was as follows. After watching more than 50 of a list of films in which Bach music was used, those in which Bach music was used more significantly were selected for individual analysis of the role played therein by the music of Bach. The Bach works analyzed were Orchestral Suite No.3, Brandenburg Concertos Nr. 3 and Nr. 5, Goldberg Variations, Bach Cello Suite Nr.1, St. Matthew Passion, and Cantata BWV 140. Results of analysis indicated that Bach music was used effectively to convey the atmosphere of particular film scenes, the psychology and emotions of characters, and the subject and message of the movie. Orchestral Suite and the Brandenburg Concertos were especially effective at communicating the atmosphere of the film scene, while the Goldberg Variations and Bach Cello Suite better conveyed the psychology and emotions of characters. St. Matthew Passion and Cantata BWV 140 were used to reveal the subject and message of the movie. Analysis of Bach music’s musical characteristics revealed the use of musical characteristics such that make for easy listening, for example the predictive repetition of melodies, descending bass melody, broken chords, harmonic consonants, and simple musical form, rather than complex counterpoint. Also, Bach pieces having been composed for the purpose of use at aristocrat gatherings were used to similar purposes in the movies, most often for ornate dinner parties. The lyrics of Bach’s religious music, when used in films, were found to play an instrumental role in conveying the film’s message. Since the days of silent films, classical music has maintained its role as an important component of film music. However, despite the interest in its use, there have been no systematic and analytical research efforts regarding classical music used in films. Insightful future research into classical film music will allow for its more meaningful use in films. Moreover, such research may allow for the matching of the pre-analyzed functions of classical pieces to film scenes or contents in the production of new films, resulting in better agreement between music and film.
