AMERICAN HIPPIE와 그 복식에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 미국의 히피(hippie)와 그 복식에 관한 연구를 목적으로 1960년대말 미국의 사회·문화적 상황과, 그 가운데 출현했던 히피의 특성, 이러한 요소들이 구체화되어 나타난 히피 특유의 복식과 그것이 그 이후 패션에 미친 영향을 고찰 하였다. 미국사회의 제반 가치에 반기를 들고 그것으로부터 이탈해 나온 젊은이들이 중심이되어 사랑과 자유의 이상을 추구했던 히피는 약물문화를 바탕으로 한 록음악(rock music)과 사이키델릭 아트, 기존사회에 대한 거부와 자연에 대한 향수에서 싹튼 ethnic(민속조) 취미 등 자신들의 새로운 문화를 특유의 복식으로 표현하였다. 기성세대의 고정관념에 대한 반항은 남녀 모두에게서 청바지와 긴머리를 유행시켰으며, 사이키델릭 프린트를 응용한 직물이나 록가수들의 다채로운 무대의상은 히피 철학의 기반을 이루고 있던 약물문화를 일반 대중에게까지 전파시키는 역할을 했다. "사랑"과 "자연"에 대한 추구는 꽃의 모티프와 육체의 자유로운 노출로 이상화되었으며, ethnic 취미와 과거에 대한 향수는 모든 시간과 공간으로부터의 영감을 다양하게 코디네이트시킴으로써 히피 패션의 내용을 더욱 풍부하게 하였다. 이와 같은 전체적 맥락 속에서도 가장 두드러지게 나타난 특징은 "느낌"에 따라 무엇이든 입고 싶은대로 입음으로써 "마음대로 입는 즐거움"에 대한 새로운 사고방식과 그로부터 표출되는 독창적 개성이었다. 이러한 히피 패션의 내용과 이미지는 오트 쿠틔르의 디자이너에게까지 영향을 미쳐 1967년부터는 사이키델틱한 색채와 ethnic 취미등이 오트 쿠틔르 컬렉션에서도 선보이기 시작하였으며, 남녀 구별없이 의복을 공유함으로써 unisex 모드를 탄생시켰을 뿐 아니라 고정관념에 억매이지 않는 자유로운 레이어링과 독특한 개성표현은 펑크 패션으로까지 연결되었다. 또한 1992년 추/동 시즌 이후부터는 히피 패션의 리바이벌로 neo hippie(네오 히피)와 grunge(그런지) 패션이 새롭게 제시되어 히피의 독특한 이미지와 레이어드 룩을 보다 새롭고 풍부한 감성으로 선보였다. 이상과 같이, 1960년대 말의 사회·문화적 특수성과 그 속에서 싹튼 젊은이들의 문화를 반영하면서 현대 복식사의 한 장을 장식했던 히피 패션은 히피세대가 미국문화의 기수역할을 담당하면서 세계문화의 중심을 이끌고 있는 1990년대에도 영패션에 계속되고 있으며, 그것의 독특한 레이어링에서 표출되는 다양한 "개성"과 "입는 즐거움"은 앞으로의 패션이 전개되어 나가는 데에도 새로운 가능성을 제시해 줄것으로 기대된다.;This study, on the Amirican hippies and their fashion, is composed of an examination of the following: the social and cultural circumstances of America in the late 1960's, the characteristics of the hippies that appeared in the midst of the foresaid background, how those factors materialized in the hippies' distinctive fashion and how they influenced fahion to come. The hippies were composed of the young generaion that revolted against all general conventional values of American society and seceded from it, seeking for the ideas of love and freedom, They expressed their newly defined culture - rock music based on drug culture, psychedelic art, rejection of an established society and ethnic tastes that sprang up from nostalgia concerning nature - by means of their own distinctive fashion. Rebelling against the fixed ideas of the older generation resulted in a great vogue for blue jeans and long hair in both men and women. Colths that adapted psychedelic prints and the colorful stage costumes of rock singers transmitted drug culture, the base of the hippies' philosophy, to the general public. The search for love and nature became idealized in the flower motif and the naked exposure of the body. The ethnic tastes and nostalgia for the past, by variously coordinating all inspirations of time and place, enhanced the opulence of the hippies' fashion. Amidst these ramifications, the most salient feature was the new way of thinking derived form the pure enjoyment of wearing just what one wanted to, according to individual "feeling", and the distinctive individuality that emerged from it. The details and images of the hippies' fashion even influenced haute couture designers. Psychedelic colors and ethnic tastes began to appear in the haute couture collections in 1967. It launched the unisex mode of men and women wearing identical clothes, and eventually connected itself to punk fashion by free layering, against the constraints of fixed ideas, and original expressions of personality. As a revival of the hippies' fashion,' neo-hippie and grunge fashions newly appeared in the F/W season of 1992 and afterwards, adding fresher and more abundant sensibility to the original image and layered look of the hippies. The hippies' fashion, which reflects the social and cultural characteristics of the late 1960's and the culture of the younger generation that arose from it, has not only played a signigicant part in modern fashion history but will continue to exert its influence in the 1990's as the hippies generation are presently the center of American culture and leaders of world culture. In conclusion, various sorts of "individuality" and "the pleasure in the wearing itself" expressed by the original layering of the hippies' fashion presents new promise in the coming development of fashion.
