(The) Shepheardes Calender의 Colin Clout을 통해 본 Spenser의 시인관

Abstract

The Shepherdes Calender (1979)는 Spenser가 시인으로서 첫발을 내디딘 참된 의미의 데뷔 작품이다. 본 논문은 The Shepheardes Calender를 사회적, 정치적, 종교적 암시로 보기 보다는 시인과 시에 관한 시로 보고 여기에 나타난 Spenser의 시인관을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 서론에서는 The Shepheardes Calender를 시인과 시에 관한 시로 보는 이유와 Spenser의 시인관을 고찰하는 접근방법에 대해 설명한다. The Shepheardes Calender를 시인과 시에 관한 시로 보는 이유로는 그 당시 영국 인문주의자들 사이에서 영어에 대한 관심이 매우 고조되었다는 점, Spenser가 스스로 자신을 Chaucer이후 척박해진 영국시단에 “새로운 시인” (a New Poete)이 되고자 했던 점, 데뷔 작품으로 목가를 선택했다는 점등이 있다. Spenser의 시인관을 고찰하는 접근 방법은 The Shepheardes Calender에 나타나는 시에 대한 여러 견해들을 종합한뒤 특히 목동-시인인 Colin Clout이 쓴 시를 분석하면서 동시에 시인으로서 겪는 문제점들을 살펴보려고 한다. Colin은 작가의 alter ego인 E. K. 가 작가의 모습이 드리워져 있다고 (“As for Colin under whose person the Authour self is shadwed.”)한 인물로 The Shepheardes Calender의 다른 여러 등장 인물들이 Colin이 뛰어난 시인임을 인정함으로써 가장 중요한 인물로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 Colin은 Spenser의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 The Faerie Queene에 등장하고, 중요한 후기 작품인 Colin Clouts Come Home Againe의 주요 등장 인물로 나타난다. 그러나 The Shepheardes Calender에 있어서 Colin의 중요성은 Spenser가 보는 이상적인 시인상을 그대로 구현해서만은 아니다. 오히려 Colin이 시인으로서 겪는 갈등을 통해서 Spenser가 참다운 시인이 되기 위해서 반드시 극복해야 할 문제점들을 보여 준다는 점에서 중요하다. 제2장에서는 “October”의 연구 분석을 통해 Spenser의 시인관을 살펴 본다. “October”에서는 Piers와 Cuddie가 화자로 등장하여 시를 쓸 때의 보상의 문제, 좋은 시의 여건, 시의 소재, 시에 있어서 사랑의 역할등을 직접적으로 이야기하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 문제들에 대해 Piers와 Cuddie는 상반된 의견을 보여 준다. Cuddie가 물질적 보상을 중요시하는 반면에 Piers는 정신적 만족을 강조하고, Cuddie는 사랑에 빠져 모든 것을 포기한 Colin의 상태를 한탄하지만, Piers는 사랑의 힘은 위대하며 인간을 숭고한 세계로 나아갈 수 있도록 도와 준다고 한다. 칭찬은 증발해버리는 것으로 아무 가치가 없다고 투덜대는 Cuddie에게 Piers는 서사시의 세계로 나아 갈 것을 권한다. Spenser가 독자를 계몽시키는 시인의 공적인 역할을 강조했으며, 진실된 사랑이 영웅적 행동과 가장 고귀한 인식으로 이끈 다른 시를 많이 썼고, 결국 The Faerie Queene이라는 서사시로 그 영역을 바꾼 점등을 미루어 Piers의 의견이 Spenser의 시인관을 보여 준다고 할 수 있다. 또한 Spenser는 Cuddie를 통해 젊은 시인이 그의 전통적 사회적 역할을 수행함에 있어 방해가 되는 요소를 아주 설득력있게 다루고 있는 것이다. 제3장에서는 “Januarye”, “Aprill”, “June”, “August” “November” 등 Colin이 직접 등장하거나 다른 등장인물들에 의해 Colin의 시가 언급되어 있는 eclogue들을 분석함으로써 Colin의 좌절과 Colin의 시인으로서의 자질이 발휘된 경우를 살펴 본다. “Januarye”에서 Colin은 그의 시가 Pan을 기쁘게 했을지 모르지만 자신이 가장 기쁘게 하고 싶은 Rosalind의 사랑을 얻는데는 실패했다는 이유로 파이프를 부수어 버린다. 시의 가장 중심이 되는 부분이 Colin의 능력을 찬미하는 Hobbinol의 이야기로 구성된 “June”에서는 Hobbinol과 Colin의 대화 속에서 점점 더 고립되어 가는 Colin을 찾아 볼 수 있다. Colin은 시쓰기를 그만 두었을 뿐만 아니라 모든 사회적 접촉과 활동까지도 포기한 것이다. “August”에서는 Colin이 자신의 실연을 Sestina라는 까다로운 형식 속에서 아주 아름답게 표현하고 있다. 또한 찬미가와 만가라는 대조적인 쟝르에서 발휘된 Colin의 시적 능력을 “Aprill”과 “November”의 분석을 통해 알아 본다. 전자에서는 Elisa에 대한 사랑이, 후자에서는 Dido에 대한 애정이 승화되어 훌륭한 시를 낳았으며 이는 “October”의 Piers를 통해 언급되었던 사랑의 역할의 좋은 예가 되는 것이다. 결론에서는 “December”의 Colin을 연구함으로써 그의 죽음이 완전한 소멸이 아니라 서사시의 세계로 나아감을 의미한다는 결론을 얻는다. Spenser는 Virgil이 목가를 데뷔 작품으로 선택했다는 점, 목가라는 쟝르 자체가 지니는 은유적 특성때문에 좋은 시와 시인에 관해 문학적 가치를 지니면서 자유자재로 논할수 있다는 점등으로 목가를 데뷔 작품으로 선택했다. 그러나 목가는 시적인 영역(Private realm)으로서, 사고하고 관조할 수 밖에 없는 쟝르상의 한계를 갖고 있다. 시인의 공적인 역할을 중요시했던 Spenser로서는 목가의 세계에서는 이상적인 시인, 인물을 완전히 그려 낼 수 없었던 것이다. 미덕이 시련을 받고 악덕에 대항하며 더욱 훌륭한 성품을 갖게 되는 인물을 창조하여 독자들이 모범으로 삼을 수있게 하려면 서사시의 세계로 나아갈 수 밖에 없었던 것이다. 그리고 Spenser는 The Faerie Queene을 통해 서사시의 세계를 훌륭하게 완성하는 것이다.;The Shepheardes Calender(l597) is Spenser's truly first debut work as a public poet. And the purpose of this thesis is to exmine Spenser's poetical view in The Shepkai-des Gzlender. In the introduction, we will illuminate the reasons that we regard SC as a poetry about poet and poetry. There was a period of liguistic upheaval and poetic barreness after Chaucer, and Spenser sets out to prove that English has now become a medium capable of poetry. And Spenser himself manifests he wants to become a "new Poete" in English poetry. Lastly he chooses the pastoral to follow the great classical mode1,Virgil and to explore the nature of poet and poetry. Spenser's poetical view are best emboded the character of Colin Clout. Colin is the main character in that E. K. introduces him as "under whose person the Authow self is shadowed." Besides, Colin is praised by other characters that Colin is the remarkable and talented poet. In addition, Colin will reappear as Spenser's alter ego in The Faerie Queence, and Colin CZouts Come Home Againe. However, the significance of Colin in SC doesn't lie in that he embodies the ideal poet that Spenser wishes to present. Rather, Colin exhibits the problems and the conflicts that hie poet must confont, and conquer. In the second chapter, we will trace Spenser's poetical view by analyzing the "October". In "October" two speakers, Piers and Cuddie, debate the problems about the rewards for writing poetry, the proper subject for poetry and the inspiration and the relationship of love to poetry. Cuddie attaches great importance to the material rewards for wiriting poetry, while Piers values emotional satisfaction. Cuddie deplores the state of Colin who has given up writing because of the unrequited love, whereas Piers advices that true love can "lyft up out of the loathsome mire". Cuddie complains that the praises of his peers are worthless, while Piers recommends him to move on the world of epic. Spenser emphasizes the poet's public duty to educate readers, writes many poems celebrating the power of love, and after all completes magnigicent epic, m e Faerie Queene. Therefore, Piers' point of views, rather than Cuddie's, are colser to Spenser's. And Spenser effectively deals with the problems that young poets might experience in pursuing his traditional and social role. The third chapter will analyze the eclogues where Colin himself appeares, and other characters sing Colin's song such as "Januarye" "Aprill" "June" "August" and "November", In "Januarye" Colin breaks his pipe that pleases Pan but not Rosalind who he wants to please. In"June", whose central stanzas contains Hobbinol's apotheosis of Colin as a Poet Colin is isolated from his friends by degrees. There Is a song singing Colin's unrequited love in the frame of sestina in "August".Lastly we will explicate Colin's poetic gift presented in contradictory genres, an encomium "Aprill" and an elegy "November" In "Aprill", the admiration for Elisa motivates Colin's poetic ability and love for Dido and sorrow for her death give birth to "November" . The two eclogues are the good examples of the power of love in poetry. In conclusion, the death of Colin in "December" means his rebirth in the world of epic. Sponsor chooses the pastoral because Virgil started his career by that genre and Pastoral can have so much implications that he can teat the Problems about poet and poetry effectively. But the pastoral world is the private realm. It shows the limit that the characters just only think and contemplate. In the Pastoral world Sponsor, who thinks much of poet's public respnsibility, cannot depict his ideal poet completely. "To form in the reader the image of virtue that has been formed by poet in his fictional example" Sponsor have to move on the world of epic. And Sponsor made it wonderfully by completing The Faerie Queene.
