Abstract

AS to the society is more complicated and desolated, people seek the relaxation of soul in their home, but home today is nothing but a space to us for 'physical rest' instead of truly peace and warmth. Thus, We come to emphasize the importance of home and realize the need for study on concerning marriage and family. It goes without saying that one's successful and happy life is connected to his(her) marriage. It is God's will in every marriage that the couple love each other with constant growth through their lifetime together. By the way, during the middle age, many family porblems and crisis come to arise, wise, while wedded bliss almost is buried under the un-bliss. The purpose of this study is to understand the family of middle age and to help them grow and enrich in their family life. The contents of this article are roughly devided into 3 parts. First, the characteristics of middle age and middle-aged family was investigated. Secondly, several factors that threatens Korean middle-aged family were pointed out from the writer's point of view. And these factors will probably describe marital situations of middle-aged couples, too. Among four factors, special emphasis is "Love". Love is essential to happiness of marriage. There are so many potential causes of difficulty which exist in marriage, and the chief element that make our marriage destroy is the "loss of Eros". Thirdly, the application of "growth counseling theory" of Dr. Howard Clinebell to the growth of Korean middle-aged family was studied. This theory may be summarized as follows. He emphasizes that the goal of ministry and counseling is "the wholeness" of a person with spirituality in the center. And our growth must be accomplished in the relationships of six dimensions, such as our body, our mind, other people, ecological system, social institution and spirituality. This theory can help one develop a better marriage and a harmonious family life. Especially, it corresponds to not only the method of new approach in studying family and family problems but Korean churches of current situation that lay emphasis on their vertical relationship with God and hinder our balanced faith. He also put stress on the importance of family counseling in church because church today have a problem to be solved to cultivate a new field of family ministry. S0, church must give a constant attention and study about family and family counseling in order to comfort, console, encourage, and heal the families in painful situtions. The Development of knowledge and technique and tools about family counseling will realize hidden potentialities in middle-aged family, too. Thus, the aim of "growth and health and happiness of family life in middle age" will be achieved.
