Abstract
Caryl Churchill is one of the most acknowledged dramatists in contemporary British theater. She was strongly influenced by socialism and feminism and often linked with Britain's 'Fringe Theatre' Movement. After graduating from Oxford. Churchill wrote plays for radio and television during the 1960s. With the rise of the new fringe theater, she found a new path to her works. She collaborated many of her works with new feminst theater groups such as Monstrous Regiment and Joint Stock Company. Through collaborative working with these groups, Churchill employed new experimental techniques like cross-gender casting, multi-role casting, and the manipulation of time. In this thesis I analyzed three of her main plays: Vinegar Tom, Cloud Nine, and Top Girls. In Vinegar Tom, as Churchill has noted in the preface, witchcraft is one convenient way of condemning women who are not to conform to the social conventions. The women who are accused of as witches in this play are all poor, socially unconventional outcasts. Churchill juxtaposes the history and the present by adding some modern songs in the play. The songs emphasize the continuity of the women's oppressed situation through history. In Cloud Nine Churchill satirizes the rigidity of Victorian sex-role expectation and the patriarchal system. Here, Betty makes self-awareness as the play develops. Churchill proposes a women's community as a family alternative in the future. Churchill's scrunity on the male-dominated society brings her to write Top Girls which deals with a woman executive who abandoned her womanly duty to get access to the 'top'. Marlene has achieved material success but just at the expense of her humanity. Curiously enough, making parallels between the history and the presnt, Churchill compares the lives of women in the past with those of the present. Along these parallels, Churchill raises some critical questions about the misogynous tradition which hasn't changed through time. Churchill asserts that the hierarchical, authoritarian patriarchal society oppressed women in the past and so does in the present. Churchill's heroines are either put to death or lose humane tenderness to her female contemporaries. Only Betty in Cloud Nine becomes aware of herself and her oppressed situation. Through her plays, Churchill seriously raises the mandatory aspects of social change and its possibility.;Caryl Churchill은 1990년대 영국극계를 대표하는 작가이다.
