대학도서관의 참고/정보봉사 발전과정에 관한 연구

Abstract

Reference / information service is the whole activities with which libraries and librarians help library users directly, in order to meet the library users' purpose. The key point of this service is to provide relevant answers to questions. Concept of the reference / information service was generated by public libraries in America in 1876 and has been developed with affecting other types of libraries. It was introduced to Korea in 1954 and has been developed mostly by university libraries. This study aims at examing the development process of reference / information service, the heart of library service, at the university libraries in America and Korea in order to review the present status of reference / information service in Korea and to provide prerequisites for its future development. Methods of literary research and interview through visits were used in parallel. Interview is carried out to know the history of reference division university libraries of Korea. In America, reference / information service was led by public libraries and the university libraries recognized it as library's key function gradually after showing conservativeness of the first stage. In Korea, the university libraries have led the development of reference / information service since its introduction from America, under the inactive conditions of the public libraries. Because of the gab between practice and concept of reference / information service, inactivity of service in public libraries, inefficiency of library management, disregard of sociopsychological factors in service, and the lack of library interaction, the qualitative growth of reference / information service in Korea was not remarkable. Introduction and growth period of reference / information service in Korea was very recent as compared with America, so it is hard to expect the qualitative service which is equal to America. The prerequisites for future development of reference / information service at the university libraries in Korea are the followings : 1. In a public library which is a basis of library culture in a nation, the concept of reference / information service should be established firmly. 2. Reference librarians and libraries should recognize user service clearly as central function of the library, and reference librarian should meet users with kindness and positiveness. 3. There is a need for subject specialist who possesses both library science and given subject field attainments in order to carry out information service. 4. Interlibrary loan system should be activated substantially. 5. There is a need for introduction of library use course into university curriculum in order to enhance library user' recognition to the library and reference / information service. 6. Online information service, interpersonal communication, and reference negotiation courses should be involved in curriculum of library science.;참고 / 정보봉사는 도서관과 사서가 이용자의 도서관이용 목적에 부응하기 위하여 직접적으로 이용자를 돕는 활동 전체를 의미하며 핵심적인 부문은 이용자의 질문에 해답을 제공하는 활동이라고 할 수 있다. 참고 / 정보봉사의 개념은 1876년 미국의 공공도서관에서 형성되어 다른 유형의 도서관에 영향을 미치면서 발전되었고, 1954년 우리나라에 도입되어서는 대학도서관을 중심으로 하여 발전되었다. 본 연구는 도서관봉사의 핵심인 참고 / 정보봉사의 발전과정을 미국과 우리나라의 대학도서관을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 참고 / 정보봉사가 우리나라에서 차지하는 위치를 재검토하고, 미래의 발전을 위한 조건을 제시하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구의 방법은 문헌조사와 방문을 통한 면담을 병용하였다. 서울시내 25개 종합대학교의 도서관을 방문하여 사서와의 면담을 통하여 참고실의 연혁과 발전과정에 관한 정보를 얻고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 미국 대학도서관의 참고 / 정보봉사는 공공도서관의 영향을 받았고, 처음에는 보수성이 강하였으나 점차 참고 / 정보봉사를 도서관의 중심기능으로 인식하면서 크게 발전하였음을 알 수 있었다. 반면 우리나라 대학도서관의 참고 / 정보봉사는 미국의 영향을 받았고, 공공도서관의 발전이 부진한 상황에서 주도적인 성장을 하였다. 그러나 우리나라의 참고 / 정보봉사는 실무와 개념정립간의 거리감, 공공도서관에서의 봉사활동 부진, 봉사에 있어서 사회심리학적인 요인의 무시, 도서관 상호협력의 부족 등으로 인하여 질적으로는 큰 발전이 없었다. 참고 / 정보봉사가 우리나라에 도입되어 발전된 기간은 미국에 비하여 단기간이므로 미국과 같은 정도의 봉사 수준을 기대할 수는 없으나 앞으로 대학도서관 참고 / 정보봉사의 성공적 발전을 위해서 몇가지 선행조건이 충족되어야 할 것이다. 1. 한 국가의 도서관문화에 있어 기초가 되는 공공도서관에서 참고 / 정보봉사의 개념이 확고히 정립되어야 한다. 2. 참고사서와 도서관은 이용자봉사를 도서관의 중심기능으로서 명확히 인식하여야 한다. 또한 참고사서는 이용자를 친절과 적극적인 자세로 대해야 한다. 3. 정보봉사의 수행을 위하여 도서관학에 대한 지식과 특정 주제분야의 지식을 겸한 주제전문사서의 확보가 필요하다. 4. 도서관 상호대차제도의 실질적인 활성화가 필요하다. 5. 대학도서관 이용자들의 도서관과 참고 / 정보봉사에 대한 인식도를 높이기 위하여 대학의 교과과정에 도서관이용법 강좌의 도입이 필요하다. 6. 대학의 도서관학 교육과정에 온라인 정보봉사, 커뮤니케이션, 참고면담, 참고평가 등의 주제가 도입되어야 한다.
