Abstract
This thesis contains an analysis of the musical form and style of the piano compositions that were presented in recital on October, 12, 1990. The compositions analysed are B.Barto´k suite, Op. 14 and L.v, Beethoven's piano sonata in A-flat Major Op.110. Barto´k's music represents the 20th century nationalism. He was a pioneer because he brought forth new techniques of expression through large scaled scientific study of folk music. His Suite Op.14 does not deal with folk materials directly, but the color of folk materials are reflected in its rhythm and melody: it possesses Barto´k's peculiar motoristic rhythm, condensed harmony based on tonal music, precise texture, elements of percussion instruments. Beethoven's sonata in A-flat Major Op.110 is extremely rich in its expression. It is more expressive than his previous works and it has a sound structure. Each movement has its own conspicuous character yet when combined as a whole. it is surprisingly systematic which shows the greatness of musical inspiration. It represents Beethoven's latter period characteristics-the creation of new sounds, long thrills, contrapuntal techniques, syncopations, meter changes and the achievement of continuous lines by making ambiguously divisions.
