『Le co^te´ de Guermantes』의 복식연구

Abstract

This study was to investigate the costumes and the aesthetic consciousness in M. Proust's 『Le co＾te′ de Guermantes』. For this purpose, the social history of costumes in the 1890's was researched and the costume prescriptions in the novel were investigated and analyzed in the aesthetic point of view. In the 1890's, costumes and modes in Paris were deeply influenced by the salon and the hostess of the salon. And the novel was based on the salon atmosphere. The costumes in the 1890's had two flows: one was lavish and erotic tendency, the other was practical Consequentely the upper of a day dress was adorned, and the lower was simple. Also tailor-made and ornamental dress coexisted. As for style, breast and hip were empasized, so silhouette formed S-letter. The costumes in the novel were classified with gowns, undergarments, coats, hair style & headdress, accessories. First, gown were mostly evening dress. As for adornments in the upper, de′collete′ and flowers were depicted. And those of the lower was not depicted surely. It may be assumed that the ballon of the skirt described the back of the skirt, considering S-letter silhouette. The silks and the train for gowns symbolized the grandeur of the aristocrats. Concerning undergarments, corset was mentioned. Regarding to coats, manteau and capote were depicted, and there were desciptions for jacket and fur coat as well. As to hair style, coiffure-high, which were in fashon, was described. With respect to hairdress for evening, simple aigrette and round hat were depicted. In contrast to this, bird, aigrette, flowers were mentioned as splendour adornments for hat. Canotier was described as the hairdress for day. With respect to accessories for the aristocrats, parasols, fans, gloves, muffs, scarf, pumps were included. As for pumps, it was elegant that pumps and evening dress were in matching color. Therefore, it may be assumed that the costumes in the 『Le co＾te′ de Guermantes』 reflected the trends of costumes and the mode in the 1890's, and that there was some aesthetic standard in wearing costumes. Chic was the aesthetic consciousness for the aristocrats in the novel. But as a substitude for chic, chics expressed 'elegance' or 'elegant' to conceal their vanity. And chic had some concepts like intelligence, raffine′, and originality. The duchess of Guermante, who was the hostess in the successful salon was chic in the novel. It can be supported by her behavior to play the part of lower positon, the taste of simplicity for costumes, and self-assertion of the taste, On the other side there was snobism in her mind, so she tried to follow the fashion and was eager to be in fashion. Accordingly chics were snobs in the 『Le co＾te′ de Guermantes』.;본 논문은 소설 『Le co＾te´ de Guermantes』를 통해 1890년대 파리 상류계층의 여성복식과 미적 범주인 chic를 연구하였다. 이를 위해 작품의 배경이 되는 1890년대의 시대상황과 복식사적 배경을 살펴보고, 작품에서 복식에 대한 표현을 고찰하며, 당시의 미의식을 연구하였다. 1890년대 파리의 모드는 살롱과 그 여주인에 의하여 깊은 영향을 받았는데, 이 작품은 이러한 살롱문화를 주요 배경으로 하고 있다. 당시의 복식을 보면 사치스럽고 에로틱한 경향과 일부 남성복화 및 실용화 경향이 있었다. 이러한 경향을 평상복에서 상반신의 장식화와 스커트의 단순화로 나타났고, 테일러드 수트와 장식적인 드레스의 공존으로도 나타났다. 실루엣은 가슴과 힙이 강조되어 옆에서 볼 때 S자형을 이루었다. 작품에 표현된 여성복식을 gowns, undergarments, coats, hair style & headdress, accessories로 분류하여 고찰하였다. 먼저 가운은 주로 야회복으로 묘사되었다. 상반신은 데콜테와 꽃장식이 묘사되었고, 스커트에는 뚜렷한 장식이 언급되지 않았다. 또한 부풀린 스커트는 당시 S자형 실루엣의 스커트를 나타내며, 견직물 소재와 트레인은 계층적 당당함을 상징하였다. 언더가먼트로는 코르셋이 언급되었다. 그리고 코트로는 망토와 카포트가 언급되었으며, 재킷과 털코트로 추정되는 묘사도 있었다. 헤어스타일은 당시 유행했던 올린 머리형이 언급되었다. 야회용 머리장식으로는 단순한 깃털장식과 샤포 롱이 언급되었고, 화려한 모자장식으로는 새, 깃털, 꽃 등이 묘사되었다. 낮시간용으로는 당신 유행했던 카노티에가 언급되었다. 상류계층의 액세서리로는 파라솔, 부채, 긴 장갑, 토시, 에샤프, 술리에 등이 언급되었다. 그 중 같은 색채의 술리에와 야회복의 착용이 e´le´gant한 것으로 표현되었다. 이와 같이 복식에 대한 표현은 당시의 복식 경향과 유행을 그대로 반영하고 있으며, 복식착용에는 섬세한 미적 규범이 있었음을 알 수 있었다. 소설 『Le co＾te´ de Guermantes』에서 chic는 상류계층의 미적 범주로 정착되어 있었으며, chic한 사람들은 허영심을 감추려는 의도에서 chic를 e´le´gance나 e´le´gant(e)으로 표현하였다. chic에는 섬교한 지혜, 세련됨 그리고 독창성 등의 개념이 내포되어 있었다. 이 작품에서 성공적인 살롱의 여주인인 게르망트 공작부인은 chic한 여성으로 묘사되었는데, 이것은 지체를 낮춰 보이려는 행동과 단순한 복식취미 그리고 복식취미에 대한 강한 자기주장으로 표현되었다. 그러나 그 내면에는 유행을 좇으려는 속성 즉, snobisme이 있었다. 따라서 소설 『Le co＾te´ de Guermantes』에서 chic한 사람들은 snob였다.
