崔漢綺의 西歐科學思想受容에 對한 一考察

Abstract

朝鮮에 있어서의 19세기는 봉건사회체제가 해체되고 근대사회로 넘어가는 전환기였다. 朝鮮의 근대화로의 과정은 국내의 상황과 함께 국외의 상황으로 많은 혼란의 길을 걷게된다. 19세기의 初의 朝鮮은 정치, 경제, 사회, 사상 등 여러 부분에서 과도기적 혼란이 나타나고 있었다. 그 중 사상계에서는 18세기까지의 사상적 관용이 사라지고 朱子學이 사상계를 지배하게 된다. 그 결과 英正祖 治政期에 배태되었던 西學思想중 西歐科學 受容의 가능성이 사라지게 된다. 西歐科學의 수용은 朝鮮의 근대화에 있어서 중요한 因子 중의 하나였다. 따라서 鎖國主義, 斥邪衛正思想에 의한 서학제반의 배척은 결과적으로 朝鮮의 근대화를 늦추는 결과를 낳게된다. 그러나, 19세기 쇄국주의 밑에서도 자주적 開國과 서구과학사상의 수용으로 富國强兵을 이루고자 했던 움직임은 엄연히 존재하고 있었다. 단지 정책적으로 실현되어 나타나지 못하고 선각자들의 사상의 차원으로 존재했을 뿐이었다. 그런데, 지금까지 학계에서는 이들의 서학사상에 대해서 구체적이고 심층적인 관심이 그리 부여되고 있지 않은 실정이다. 따라서 본고에서는 서학수용의 의미를 적극적으로 이해하기 위한 하나의 방편으로 이 시기의 대표적 인물인 惠崗 崔漢綺의 서학사상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 崔漢綺는 다른 末期 實學者들과는 달리 學的 師承關係가 알려져 있지않기 때문에 자세한 것은 알 수 없으나 크게 보아서 儒學, 實學, 西學의 영향을 받아 자신의 사상을 형성한 것으로 생각된다. 그의 제반 사상은 모두 그의 철학에서 비롯된다. 그는 철학적으로는 主氣論的 입장에 서 있다. 그리고, 經驗主義, 變通論 등에서 보이는 바와 같이 독특한 인식론을 형성하고 있었다. 그 중 변통론은 그의 서구과학 수용의 주장과 연결되는 것이었다. 崔漢綺는 그의 시대 이전에 전해진 西學書 및 그의 시대에 새롭게 전해진 서학서를 통해 광범위한 서양에 대한 지식을 가지고 있었다. 그의 서학인식은 크게 天文學에 관한 인식, 科學技術에 관한 인식, 地理에 관한 인식으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 그는 서양의 曆法 및 機械, 物理, 化學, 醫學 등 과학기술상의 우수성을 인정하였을 뿐만아니라 각국의 문화의 다양성 및 세계가 서로 문호개방을 하고 있음도 알고 있었다. 그리하여 그는 우수한 西歐科學의 受容을 주장하게 된다. 그 수용의 구체적인 방법으로는 서적의 유통, 開國, 제도의 개편, 교육의 방법을 들고 있다. 우리는 이러한 崔漢綺의 서구과학 인식과 수용의 방법론에 대한 검토를 통해 그의 서학관에는 개방성, 진보성, 실용성, 합리성, 과학성 등의 특징이 나타나 있음을 알 수 있다. 비록 그는 서양제국의 본질을 깨닫지 못하여 서구 제국주의 침략에 대응할 수 있는 海防思想에 있어서는 다소 한계성을 지니고 있었지만, 전환기 사회에 있어서 시대를 선도하는 진보적인 사상가였다.;Chosun dynasty of the 19th century underwent the transition from the feudal system to the modern society. Multilateral confusion accompanied it, and especially the realm of ideology had considerable change. The approval of ideological choices disappeared which had continued until the 18th century, and Confucianism became to dominate the realm. This resulted in cutting at the possibility of the introduction of the Western scientific technology which was budding through the era of Young-Cho(英祖) and Jung-Cho(正祖). The western technology could have accelerated the modernization of Chosun dynasty. However, strong nationalism of the 19th century made the inflow of the western scientific asset impossible, Therefore, it delayed the modernization of Chosun dynasty. Nevertheless, the need of the introduction of the western civilization was continuously insisted by progressive men, but it never became realized. Until now, little study was made about the progressive thoughts of such men. So, this report tried to focus on the thought of Choi Han-Ghi who was the most conspicuous representative of the new movement. He had broad knowledge of the West by books about the western science. His knowledge could be divided into three categories, astronomy. scientific technology, and geography. He approved the excellency of the western technology. In addition, he knew the variety of civilization of its countries and that they were opening the door each other. Based upon this world change, he insited on opening the door to accept occidental civilization. For the methods of introduction, he suggested the import of books, open-door policy, reorganization of systems, and education. From the study of his thought, we can find his view progressive, practical, reasonable, and scientific. He had his limitations that he could not notice the nature of the western imperialism. However, history finds him a progressive figure of the late chosun dynasty.
