The poetical works of Oh Jang-hwan who devoted himself actively to the composition of poems from the middle 1930's to the Liberation Period were put such a remarkable value by the both camps of the Realism and the Modernism, the two main-current groups of the literary criticism of the day, as to be said that he treated reality. of those days with a distinguished technique. Therefore I have studied a transformational process of Oh Jang-hwan's understanding of the reality found in a correlative relationship between the self and the world, and studied an aesthetic quality of his embodimental method in poetry which corresponds organically to the previous through analyzing his whole poetical texts. In the 1st chapter, I reviewed the former studies, and brought up my own issues and methods. In the 2nd chapter (dealt with his early stage), the self and the world showed an antagonistic relationship. The world was regarded as a negative object by the self, and the latter formed a double-valued attitude to be expressed as the intervening will and the escaping will about the former. And this was realized by revealing the duplicate tone of subjectivity and objectivity of the speaking narrator, and evoking the mood by imagery, externalizing it by concealment of the exposed narrator. In the 3rd chapter (dealt with his middle stage), the self and the world showed a separate relationship. The concealed lyric narrator showed a correlative relationship between the self and the world through the cognition of time. At this point the knowledge of the negative past intensified the desperate mood which was existent in the narrator, and this despair made him deny the future itself, or dream an affirmative future through the death based upon a religious view of the world. And he represented the cognition of reconciliation which intended to overcome the estrangement between the self and the world in the <way> imagery. It was described concretely in the <valley> cognition which, by the action of descending from <the mountain>, the symbol of real space, to <the village>, the symbol of ideal space, showed reascent up to the mountain, and in the <homecoming> cognition which showed the process of leaving his native place, roaming about the sea, the 'other symbol of ideal space, and returning to his native place. Therefore the <way> imagery got to stand for the deepened cognition of the reality and for the intention of overcoming the reality. In the 4th chapter (dealt with his late stage), the self and the world formed a balanced relationship. In the Liberation Period when the whole expression of the internal cognition was possible, he had an interest in a practice of writing, tried to form a vital relationship between the self and the world in his works. That is to say. he tried to bring forth people's cognitive awakening by embodying the advancing subject that is transformed from the individual self to the ideological self through defining the hearer who is to be our aiming object. And bring forth political awakening of people as a reader of the day by criticizing in a satirical tone the negative character who had been reified by setting up antagonized characters. In the 5th chapter, I summerized conclusively the result and significance of this study. I have cleared up through analyzing closely his poetical texts that his literature preserved in his own poetical world the whole process of internal transformation, overcoming and development on which realistic tendency literature plodded from the middle 1930's to the Liberation Period under the influence of various phases of the times. Consequently I put significance on my attempt to surmount the existing discontinuistic view of literary history which have tried finding out the basis of development of literary history from negation of the previous literature, through looking on the developmental process of literary history as the continuous developmental process by critical inheritance of the previous literature.;1930년대 중반으로부터 해방기에 이르기까지 활발한 작품활동을 보여온, 시인 오장환의 작품은 당대 평론계의 두 주류인 리얼리즘과 모더니즘의 양측 진영 모두에서, 당대 현실을 내용으로 다루고 있으면서 기교적으로도 높은 수준을 확보하고 있다고 평가, 주목되어 왔다.
