Aaron Copland의 "Sextet"에 대한 연구

Abstract

Aaron Copland (1900 - ), one of America's most distinguished composers of the twentieth century, used American jazz, Latin American folk music, European neo - classicism, popular functional music and serial music in his compositions. The aim of this thesis is to analyze his 'Piano Quartet' which, was written in 1950. He used serial music for the first time at this piece. The followings are the results of the study on the 'Piano Quartet'. This work consists of three movements. The first movement is sonata form, the second and third are compsed in three part form. The tempo of all the movements is Adagio serio - Allegro giusto - non troppo lento, which is different from the general form of sonata. This work is based on a 12 tone - row which includes whole tone scale and chordal sonority factors. It is composed on the cyclic principle, where the main factors of the 1st movement are applied to the 2nd and 3rd movements. Though simple and of serial composition, his music retains the sense of tonality. It employs traditional principles, such as sequence, repetition, imitation and canon. The harmony used in this work is modern harmony, such as Major second and dyad (perfect fifth, minor third), minor 11th , perfect 4th. It puts emphasis on the intervals found in the 10th, 11th, 12th chords of the 12 tone -row. His music is sometimes polytonal, modal or monotonal, but not atonal. Pentatonic scale, major - minor scale or chromatic scale are used for melody on the basis of whole tone scale. Rhythm shows variety through syncopation, changing meters and polyrhythm.;Aaron Copland (1900~1990)는 20세기에 활동한 미국의 대표적인 작곡가로서 그의 음악은 미국의 재즈(Jazz)적인 요소, 라틴 아메리카의 민속적인 요소와 유럽적인 신고전주의(Neoclassicism), 그리고 대중적인 실용음악(Functional music)과 음열음악(Serial music)에 이르기 까지 다양한 양식을 지니고 있다. 본 논문은 Copland가 음열기법을 최초로 시도한 Piano Quartet(1950)에 관한 분석적 연구이며, 본 연구를 통하여 Copland가 음열기법만을 고수하지 않고, 음열기법과 그의 기존 양식을 어떻게 조화시키는가를 관찰하여 Copland 음악의 한 단면을 살펴봄에 있다. Piano Quartet의 분석을 통하여 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 이 곡은 전 3악장으로 이루어져 있으며, 1악장은 소나타(sonata)형식, 2악장, 3악장은 3부 형식으로 되어 있다. 전 악장의 빠르기 분포를 살펴보면, Adagio serio-Allegro giusto-Non troppo lento로 되어 있는데, 보통 빠르고-느리고-빠르게로 구성되는 일반 소나타와는 다른 빠르기의 분포를 보여준다. 이 곡은 온음음계(whole tone scale)의 요소와 화성적 음향(chordal sonority)의 요소를 함축하여, A음이 빠지고 제 1음인 B^(b)음을 제12음으로도 사용한 12음의 음열을 토대로 한 작품이다. 또한 이 극은 Copland의 전통적인 양식과 조화를 이루어 만들어 지는데, 1악장의 주제 요소들이 2악장과 3악장에서 응용됨으로써, 전체적 3악장은 상호 유기적인 연관관계를 가지는 순환 주제의 요소(cyclic principle)가 적용된다. 전 곡은 음열기법을 도입하긴 했지만, 모호한 조성감을 유지하고 있으며 동형진행(sequence), 반복(repetition), 모방(imitation)이나 캐논(canon) 등의 전통적인 방법을 사용하는 등 조성 음악적인 맥을 유지했다. 화성은 주로 온음음계를 수직으로 구성한 장2도로 구성된 화음, 장·단3화음의 동시 배치로 인해 생기는 불협화음, 또는 완전5도 단3도 관계의 다이어드(dyad)의 울림, 음열의 제 10, 11, 12음 사이의 음정 패턴의 강조, 11화음, 완전4로 구성된 화음 등과 같은 근대적 화음들이 주종을 이룬다. 선율은 온음음계를 기본으로 하여 2개의 5음음계(pentatonic scale)를 합성하여 사용하거나, 장·단음계(Major-minor scale)를 3음음계(trichord)와 4음음계(tetrachord)로 나누어 사용하고 있고, 또한 반음계(chromatic scale), 온음계적 (diatonic scale)인 요소도 함께 사용하고 있다. 리듬은 당김음(syncopation)이나 변박자(changing meter), 리듬의 분할 등으로 변화를 보여주고 있으며, 3악장에서는 폴리리듬(polyrhythm)도 잠시 나타나고 있다.
