Abstract

Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) is one of the most out-standing composers in America since E. MacDowell. He has imgresissionistie tendencies and excels in program music. Although he original and excellent compositional techniques result very important meaning in the history of American music. The term of Impressionism aptly applys to the middle works of Griffes, the most typical being Roman Sketches, Op.7 (1915-1916). In this descriptive piano pieces-「The White Peacock」,「Nightfall」,「The Fountain of the Acqua Paola」 「Clouds」, -, Griffes proves that he has a remarkable feeling for tone color and atmospheric recreation. The four pieces of Roman Sketches, have ternary form and they are based on William Sharp's poem. poem and These pieces describe the a change in the tempo is very frequent. It is characterized by ninth chord of the first, complex rhythm of the second, chromatic harmony of the third and colorful effect of the fourth piece. MacDowell 이후 미국이 낳은 뛰어난 작곡가의 한 사람으로서 인상파의 영향을 받았으며 표제음악에도 뛰어났다. 또한 독창적이고 뛰어난 작곡 기법으로 남겨 놓은 작품은 적으나 미국음악사상 중요한 의의를 지니고 있다. 본 논문에서 연구할 Griffes의 「Roman Sketches, Op. 7」은 1915-1916년에 작곡된 묘사적인 피아노곡이다. 이 작품은 인상주의의 경향을 가졌고 「The White Peacock」, 「Nightfall」, 「The Fountain of the Acqua Paola」 그리고 「Clouds」등 4개의 소품으로 되어있다. 이 작품에서 Griffes는 자신의 음색과 분위기 재창조에 놀라운 감각을 지녔음을 증명했다. 「Roman Sketches, Op. 7」의 4개의 소품들은 모두 3부형식으로 되었고 William Sharp의 시를 기초로 하였다. 이 작품은 시를 음악적으로 잘 묘사하였으며 박자변화가 매우 잦다. 또한 이 작품은 제1곡의 9화음, 제2곡의 복잡한 리듬, 제3곡의 반음계적 화성 그리고 제4곡의 풍부한 색채적 표현이 특징적이다. 이 중 제1곡이 가장 널리 알려졌고 작곡가의 인상주의적 경향을 잘 나타내었다.
