Abstract
Ultrastructure of cytoplasmic organelles in the oocytes of a polycheate worm, Pseudopotamilla occelata Moore, were investigated by electronmicroscope in connection with the formation of yolk and cortical granules. 1. Cytoplasmic organelles, which begin to appear at 30pm stage, structurally change during oogenesis. Endoplasmic reticulum tends to increase in number up to the intermediate stage and then decrease toward the end of oogenesis. Most of those observed at the intermediate stage were rough endoplasmic reticulum. Mitochondria appear in a round shape at the early stage and this shape persist through the intermediate stage. Mitochondria were observed to be lacking in cristae but filled with many small vesicles in the matrix. However, cristae reappear at the late stage of oogenesis. Golgi complexes, which appear at the early and intermediate stage of oogenesis at the peripheral side of oocyte, contribute to the formation of cortical granules. Coated vesicles of various type were observed in the chorion and perivitelline space from 60㎛ to 150㎛ oocyte. 2. Yolk granules begin to form at the early stage of oogenesis from multivesicular bodies, which have been observed to tansform from mitochondria. Small vesicles within the multivesicular bodies were fused to form the precursors of core bodies of yolk granules. Some vesicles originate from cytoplasm are also coalesced into the multivesicular bodies at intermediate stage to form yolk granules. Formed yolk granules are composed of electron-dense core bodies which are seperated from each other by electron-opaque small vesicle-like structuers. The observations indicated that membraneous structures change in structure and quantity and that multivesicular bodies are associated with the formation of yolk granules.
