NEW WAVE FASHION

Abstract

So as professor A. Topler pointed out, the world of nowadays is facing with new age centering with computer or electronics which is expressed in 'The Third Waves'. And man in this changing environment also has changed, especially in the way of thinking. That is, in this age of loss of humanity in all respects because of man's regarding technology the first in general, every life style has been varied, and on the other hand, a new trend in consciousness that respects human sensitivity is on the progress. Hence the new wave also has come into the field of costumes. In this study, the flows of fashion from the middle of seventies in 20C up to now has been investigated in order to deal with the new wave in fashion emphasizingly, and the will of modeling and styles in the flows of fashion has been considered. Furthermore, the next issues also have been examined; the structural change in consciousness that is the basic cause of New wave Fashion; the new waves in various forms like to in architecture, furniture, music, dance and in general arts; and the expressional characteristics of modern arts. As the general mode in new wave fashion, the mannish look of classical atmosphere constitutes the main current, This phenomenon comes out in relation with the baby-boom generation which has a strong social participating consciousness. And the mannish look is one of the mixed styles adding modernity on the traditional and functional Tailored style with the avant-garde elements of young generation fashion. The New Wave Fashion can be characterized into such styles as Punk, Post Modern, Neo Modernism and Androgynous. With these styles, the young avant-garde generation, loving the unprecedented designs independently of the tradition, has expressed its rich sensitivity. Punk is the style which began in 1976 with the costumes of rock singers, can be characterized as an anti-mode phenomenon, agressive and of unfavourable impression, that brought from the attitudes of resisting youth against old generation. But this style has given to the high fashion styles a fresh feeling and been exerting continuous influences on the accessaries and hair styles till now. Post Modern is a design concept developed in 1982, and is an attempt to create new fascination to the modern fashion by bringing every past mode. It's expressional characteristics are as follows: The first is the revival of Art Deco Style, the second the compromise between the decorative handicraft technique and the modern sense, the third the mutual concession of Eastern and Western styles, the fourth the change of image by bringing the elements of conventional man's wear into woman's costumes, and the fifth is the change of image in traditional items after the modern designing methods or appearance of accessaries. Neo Modernism is of fashion sense in 1983 and is characteristic in adding human emotions like humour, warmth, and elegance to the high technical coldness. Post Modern and Neo Modernism are clearly distinguished from each other in architecture, but they are identified in costume styles since post modern is but a temporary phenomenon and has certain commonness in its character with that of Neo Modernism. The expressional characteristics of Neo Modernism are as follows : The first is the harmony between the modern sense of avant-garde and the classicism, the second the appearance of pastel colors shown in Walt Disney's animations and primary colors which Joan Mir'o frequently used, the third the substitute handicraft and embroidery techniques for the symbolic expressions of dynamic machine civilization, the fourth the humour in art mode, and the fifth is the non-constructive silhouette. Androgynous which appeared at the end of 1984 is a new fashion style, not adhering to form, but crossing over the pure manly elements and the womanliness in this time when the roles of each sex are not distinctive. Its expressional characteristics are as follows : The first is the coordination without any pattern that both man and woman can wear based on free sensitivity, the second the change of image by mixing the most mainly costume style and also most womanly style into one appearance, the third is the change to the free image by bringing the elements of man's costume to the woman's costume. Consequently, the New Wave fashion is making gradual progress with the aim of incidence, that is, the undercurrent of expression like general arts. Besides, by the fact that the ten popular designers whom the important buyers in France selected were all new wave designers and that the new wave fashion had somewhat high market values, we are to know that it has been appealed to the general public.;토플러 교수가 지적한 바와 같이 오늘날 세계는 '3의 물결'로서 컴퓨터와 일렉트로닉스가 중심이 되는 새로운 시대를 맞이하고 있다. 이러한 변화하는 환경속에서 인간들의 의식구조도 달라지고 있다. 즉 機能第一主義下에 모든 것이 인간성 상실의 시대에서 생활이 다양화하는 한편 인간의 감성을 존중하는 새로운 의식변화의 흐름이 진행되고 있는 것이다. 따라서 복식에서도 뉴 웨이브시대를 맞이하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 패션에서의 뉴 웨이브를 중점적으로 다루기 위해 70년대 중반기부터 현재까지의 패션의 흐름을 살펴보고 그 속에 흐르는 조형의지와 양식을 고찰해 보았다. 이러한 새로운 흐름의 근원이 되는 패션기수의 의식구조의 변화와 건축, 가구, 음악, 무용 등 일반예술에서 나타나고 있는 뉴 웨이브 그리고 현대예술의 표현적 특성을 살펴보았다. 뉴 웨이브 패션의 일반적인 모우드는 클래식(classic)한 분위기의 매니쉬 룩(mannish look)이 주류를 이루고 있다. 이는 사회참여의식이 강한 베이비 붐세대와 연관되어 나타나는 현상으로서 전통성과 기능성 위주의 테일러드복식에 영(young)세대의 전위적인 패션의 요소를 받아들여 현대적인 맛을 가미시킨 룩(look)이다. 한편 뉴 웨이브는 펑크(punk), 포스트 모던(post modern), 네오 모더니즘(neo modernism), 안드로지너스(androgynous)로 양식을 구분해서 그 특징을 살펴 볼 수 있다. 이러한 양식들은 젊은 아방가르드(avantgarde)한 세대가 주축이 되어 전통에 구애받지 않고 파격적인 디자인을 애호하며 풍부한 감성을 표현하였다. 펑크는 1976년 록 가수들의 의상에서 시작된 것으로 기성사회에 반항하는 젊은이에게 표현된 反모우드 현상으로서 공격적이고 불쾌감을 주는 것이 특징이다. 그러나 하이 패션계에 새로운 감각으로 신선함을 던져주었고 현재 악세사리나 헤어 스타일에 지속적으로 영향을 주고 있다. 포스트 모던은 1982년에 패션에서 받아들인 디자인 관념으로서 과거의 모우드를 현대에 가져와 의복에 새로운 매력을 창조하려는 시도이다. 표현상 특징으로 첫째, 아르데코의 조형감각의 부활 둘째, 장식적인 수공예기법과 현대감각의 절충 세째, 동·서양 양식의 상호절충 네째, 전통적 남성복의 요소를 여성복에 도입함에 따른 이미지 변화 다섯째, 현대적인 악세사리나 착장법에 따른 전통적인 품목의 이미지 변화 등으로 나타난다. 네오 모더니즘은 83년의 유행감각으로 하이 테크니칼(high technical)한 차거움속에 유모아, 따뜻함, 우아함등 인간의 정서를 가미시킨 것이 특징이다. 건축에 있어서 포스트 모던과 네오 모더니즘은 뚜렷이 구별되어 나타나고 있으나 복식에 있어서 포스트 모던을 일시적인 현상이고 그 양식의 특징으로 보아 네오 모더니즘과 거의 동일시되고 있다. 표현상 특징은 첫째, 전위적 모던감각과 클라시시즘(classicism)의 융합 둘째, 월트 디즈니의 애니메이션(animation)에 나타난 파스델칼라와 호안 미로가 즐겨 사용한 원색의 출현, 세째, 다이나믹한 기계문명의 상징이 자수나 수공예적 기법으로 표현된 것 네째, 아트 모우드(art mode)속의 유모어 다섯째, 비구축적인 실루엣 등으로 나타난다. 1984년 말부터 등장한 안드로지너스는 형식에 얽매이지 않으며 성역활차가 사라지고 있는 오늘날 자신의 性을 부정하지 않고 순수한 여성다움과 남성다움을 자유롭게 용합시킨 새로운 감각이다. 첫째, 자유로운 감성을 기초로 일정한 형이 없이 남·여가 모두 입을 수 있는 복식의 코오디네이트 둘째, 가장 확실한 남·여복식의 단품을 한 외관에 코오디네이트시켜 융합함에 따른 이미지 변화 세째, 여성복식에 남성복의 요소를 도입하나 자유로운 변형에 의한 이미지 변화 등으로 안드로지너스 룩은 표현되고 있다. 이상과 같이 웨이브 패션은 일반예술에서와 마찬가지로 표현의 저류로는 「우연성에의 지향」으로 나아가고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 프랑스 유력 바이어(buyer)가 뽑은 인기 디자이너 10명이 모두 뉴 웨이브 패션 디자이너이었고 시장성이 있다는 자료로 보아 일반 대중에게도'뉴 웨이브패션이 받아들여지고 있음을 알 수 있다.
