John Cranko의 예술세계에 관한 연구

Abstract

It is John Cranko, an English choreorgrapher born in South Africa in 1927, Who made the Stuttgart Ballet Company as it is today, and contributed its settlement in Germany. Based on his experience at Royal Ballet School and Royal Ballet Company he accomplished "A Miracle of Stuttgart Ballet," with genius and fortune only within thirteen years. He obtained diversified repertories, trying to find something new continuously with his genius and interests in all things, Although he lived only to be 45 he achieved more feat than that of any other person. In this study, being considered Cranko's life and thoughts, his successful works「Onegin」and 「The Taming of The Shrew」 are analyzed and his influence on the German ballet is also examined. The conclusions are as followings ; 1. Being respectful of classic traditions, John Cranko revived the story ballet which is a main characteristic of the classic ballet. In order to convey not the plot simply but the complicated variations of emotion in his characters, he took advantage of the motions of ballet. As a result, the contents of story ballet got to be profound. 2. He satisfied his audience more greatly by inserting wit and humor into a lot of his works, and provided the modern ballet with the new way of implying the profound meanings with comic and satier. 3. He made the Stuttgart Ballet Company have its own repertories and styles, and one of the most inventive and active company. The active performance of the Stuttgart Ballet Company led by him stimulated all German ballet.;오늘날 獨逸ballet를 상징하는 The Stuttgart Ballet를 세계적 水準의 ballet단으로 끌어올리고 獨逸에서 ballet가 뿌리를 내릴 수 있게하는데 결정적인 貢獻을 한 人物 가운데 英國의 按舞家 크랑코(John Cranko, 1927~1973)를 들 수 있다. 1927年 남아프리카 공화국에서 태어난 그는 영국의 「Royal Ballet School」과 「Royal Bellet단」에서 얻은 경험과 재능 그리고 행운의 적절한 결합에 힘입어 13年이라는 짧은 기간 동안에 "라인강의 奇蹟"과도 비유되는 "Stuttgart Ballet의 奇蹟"을 이루어 놓았다. 그는 天賦的 才能과 모든 것에 대한 관심과 흥미를 가지고, 끊임없이 새로운 것을 찾아내고자 하는 노력으로 다양하고 광범위한 repertory를 모색했다. 그의 삶이 비록 45年이라는 짧은 기간이었지만, 그는 그보다 오래 살았던 사람들보다 더 많은 業績을 남겨 놓았다. 본 硏究는 Cranko의 生涯와 思想을 살펴보고 Stuttgart Ballet단에서 그가 이루어놓은 성공적인 일련의 활동가운데 특히 作品 「On-egin」과 「The Taming of the Shrew」를 중심으로 분석하면서 이를 통해 그가 獨逸ballet에 끼친 크나 큰 影響과 더 나아가서는 20세기 ballet에 끼친 寄與를 아울러 고찰해 보았다. 이 硏究結果를 종합할 때, 첫째, John Cranko는 고전적 전통체계에 대한 깊은 존경심을 가지고 Classic ballet의 특징을 살려가면서, Story ballet로서의 새로운 면모를 개척하여 20세기에 걸맞는 再創造의 結晶을 우리앞에 남겨놓았다. 이러한 ballet에 미친 寄與度는 단순한 줄거리의 일부수정이 아니라, 극중인물의 미묘한 感情변화를 주시하면서 거기에 일어나는 갈등, 굴절, 대립, 기복 등을 묘사하려 함에 종전처럼 단위무용의 羅列式 전개가 아니라, 劇的 必然性에 입각하여 劇的 表現, 論理的 當爲위에서 이를 재구성, 개변하였다. 둘째, 自身의 作品속에 위트와 유우머를 되살려 20세기 관객들에게 삶의 즐거움, 生活의 즐거움, 문화의 즐거움을 제공해주면서, 오늘이 안고있는"喜劇속의 悲劇"의 참모습을 제시함으로써 새로운 ballet의 면모를 대중 앞에 내놓았다. 세째, The Stuttgart Ballet단을 단순한 무용수 집합체가 아닌, 하나의 가족적 개념에 동화시켜 repertory와 형성style과 조형과 내용부조에서 고도의 앙상블을 구현했다. 따라서 이와같은 그의 업적은 단순히 Stuttgart라는 좁은 세계에서만 그 의의가 세워지는 것이 아니라, 항상 새로운 ballet 이념을 추구해 가는 전세계 ballet 예술가에게 鼓舞的이고 示唆的, 未來志向的 교훈을 남겨 놓았다고 풀이할 수 있겠다.
